  • Where does the District advertise for open positions?

When a vacancy becomes available, the district typically advertises the position on EdJoin, a website used throughout the industry to house educator’s applications and promote positions within school systems.  In addition to Edjoin, we also advertise on other websites and/or in professional or trade journals in order to reach a specialty candidate pool.    Flyers for all positions are also created and posted throughout district sites, as outlined in our Collective Bargaining Agreements.

    How long are positions advertised?

When the district advertises an open position, it “flys” for a minimum of five (5) working days.  Classified positions posted during a recess period are advertised for a minimum of eight (8) days.   Depending on the time of year and number of candidates expected to be qualified and interested, we sometimes fly for longer periods of time.  The district prides itself on recruiting exceptional candidates.  We will re-fly positions if the first recruitment is unsuccessful.

How are determinations made regarding who is the best candidate for each position?

The typical process includes the following steps:

    • Many of our classified positions require passing certain tests before a candidate can be considered for an interview.  All tests that are required for a specific position are listed on the job posting, along with the date and time the District will offer the test.
    • Staff are identified to conduct paper screening, where candidate applications, letters of intent, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and credentials are reviewed.  At this point, a list is generated of candidates who will be invited to interview.
    • Initial interviews are conducted by a panel.   Interviewers take notes and rank the candidates based on their responses.  The panel selects the final candidate(s) and conducts multiple reference checks or they select top performing candidates for a second interview.
    • Second-round interviews are conducted by another panel, typically comprised of both returning and new interviewers.  This setting is a bit less formal, with the panel able to ask clarifying and specific questions.  Performance tasks, including writing samples and presentations, depending on the position, are used in combination with the second-round of interviews or are done as a final round.  Candidates are once again ranked by each panel member.
    • A third round of interviews and/or performance tasks are done when deemed necessary.
    • Multiple reference checks are conducted on the final candidate(s).
    • An offer of employment is made to the final candidate, and once the candidate accepts the position, the name is submitted to the Governing Board for approval.
    • All new employees attend a New Hire Orientation before they begin their new position.

What qualifications do I need to substitute in the District?

Certificated substitutes need to have passed the CBEST, hold a B.A. or B.S. degree, and hold a 30 day permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.  Classified substitutes need to have earned a high school diploma.  Certain classified substitute positions including Health Clerk, Instructional Assistant III, Job Coach, Child Care Aide, and Intensive Behavior Intervention Assistant also require CPR/First Aid certification, and to substitute as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), one must have an LVN license.

How do I become a substitute?

Our certificated and classified substitute positions are posted on EdJoin, as well.  In order to apply to become a substitute, an online application must be completed.    All substitute applications are screened by one of the Directors of Human Resources Development.  Through the screening process, candidates are selected to attend a New Hire Substitute Orientation.
