Our Mission
At Brookfield School we strive to inspire our students to “Rise to the Challenge” every day. This year Brookfield is continuing to meet the challenges of COVID-19. The classroom environment is safe as possible with small class sizes, an iWave air purification system for each classroom, fully implemented safety procedures, and individually assigned Chromebooks for each student. Our large campus and regulation U12 soccer field give students plenty of room to play safely outdoors, and the electrostatic virus controlling misters we use help to control all of the viruses children may spread on the climbing equipment, not just COVID.

A unique school in Sacramento – one of the best
More than 1,500 children study at the California-based Community Outreach Academy, who are taught Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian. The so-called Russian school in Sacramento is in good standing with local residents and authorities.
Read this article in English
Once again we are on the territory of the Sacramento public charter school – Community Outreach Academy, which is so loved in the Russian and Ukrainian diaspora of Sacramento.
The secondary and elementary school, which today has more than 1,500 children of predominantly Slavic origin, is a kind of stronghold of Russian, Ukrainian and even Belarusian culture in the capital of California.
As Larisa Gonchar, director of the educational institution, told Slavic Sacramento, this year the Belarusian Club was added to the school curriculum, where, along with the Belarusian language, children will be able to study the culture and traditions of this people. The fact is that recently the leadership of the Community Outreach Academy reached an agreement with the Grodno secondary school in the field of teaching the Belarusian language. As a result, a small Belarusian club is already operating on the basis of the Californian educational institution.
In addition to learning other languages on campus, there is an opportunity to attend all kinds of extended-day classes and hobby groups. The school’s deputy director, Michael Cerdi, said that as part of the training, children go in for dance, ballet, karate and other sports. Separately, they are trained in the skills of working with the Lego constructor and a 3D printer, with the help of which schoolchildren can create all kinds of figures and models.

Larisa Gonchar, an immigrant from Belarus who has run the school for 15 years, says the school ranks well in the region in a number of ways, including financial health, children’s literacy rates and social status.
“We try to make our children grow up literate, comprehensively developed, educated,” says Gonchar, “so that they are ready to live and serve in this country.”
According to Gonchar, her charter school model “serves as a kind of bridge between cultures” that helps the children of Slavic immigrants integrate into American society without significant losses.
Another feature of the school is the emphasis on an individual approach to the learning process. There is one teacher for ten schoolchildren, and in total about 60 teachers are involved in the school.
I go to one of the classes. The children ask me to sign the terms of the so-called “social contract” hanging on the wall next to the interactive whiteboard monitor, in which I pledge to “be honest, respect others and learn to solve problems.” The same “agreement” is concluded by each student before entering the classroom. In my opinion, this is a very interesting experiment, which is designed to awaken in a child all the noblest intentions and decisions.
As in the Russian language class, children learn the alphabet and Ukrainian folklore in the Ukrainian class.
[rev_slider community-outreach-academy]
After the unfortunate events in the East of Ukraine, immigrants and refugees from Russia and Ukraine began to arrive en masse in California and in particular in Sacramento. I met one of these students on the sports ground near the school. The boy told me that this school differs from his former Ukrainian school in that “there is much more space and more interesting activities.”
Community Outreach Academy maintains an active relationship with county law enforcement who regularly conduct special education events for children. For example, at one of these lectures, local police officers shared with schoolchildren professional advice on safety on the street and on the Internet, as well as how to behave in an accident and in other emergency situations.
In turn, the teachers visit the local police station, along with gratitude “for service and protection of the area”, presenting representatives of the law with symbolic gifts and sweets from grateful children and their parents.
The capital of California is the second homeland of the Russian language
The school’s “live lessons” also include representatives from the Sacramento Fire Department, who educate children about the basics of fire safety and what to do in case of a fire.
Children have their own “radio room”, where elementary school students record children’s programs, as well as morning messages for broadcasts in classes and online.
In the computer class, children play educational games, get acquainted with the basics of working with a PC, and perform a variety of teacher tasks.
A special extra-curricular competition deserves special attention, during which students create models of various vehicles – from police cars to ambulances – and move around the campus in impromptu “costumes”. The jury is made up of school administrators, parents and the children themselves. According to Larisa Gonchar, these events help her little wards to decide on their future profession in adulthood.
Rising talent shows of all kinds, theme nights, outdoor family movie screenings, sports competitions, regional competitions in grammar, arithmetic and other subjects, a variety of cultural events and theatrical performances complete the widest range of extraordinary learning experiences.
Zhanna Ivanyuk, one of the parents, an immigrant from Ukraine, whose three children have been attending Community Outreach Academy since kindergarten, says that her family really likes this school, because there are “a lot of Russians and very good teachers, very good relations and no misunderstandings “.
Indeed, in the corridors of the school and on the playgrounds, sincere children’s energy is in full swing.
VIDEO REPORT: West Sacramento Police have a Slavic Department
As Deputy Director Michael Cerdy said, in order to ensure the safety of children attending the educational institution, the school has a unified video surveillance system, which allows administrators of the “academy” to monitor children in real time. This significantly reduces the number of unauthorized intrusions on the school grounds, and also expands the possibilities of monitoring what is happening on campus.
In addition, the Twin Rivers School District, which includes Community Outreach Academy and several smaller districts, is the 29th largest school district in the United States, according to the Department of Education. It includes more than 28 thousand schoolchildren who speak 46 languages of the world.
Twin Rivers alumni include distinguished teachers, prominent politicians, outstanding athletes, and notable regional government officials.
