how to find an individual approach at school

What is the meaning of an individual approach to a child at school

K. D. Ushinsky. He believed that even in a group it is important to take into account the characteristics of each child, and not to perceive the class as a whole.

The essence of the individual approach lies in the fact that the child can master any subject according to the methodology that suits him. It is easier for someone to assimilate information in video lectures, for someone in a playful way, and for someone by reading paragraphs. Learning will be effective if it is built around the strengths of the child.

Individual approach is not the same as individual training. It is also possible in a group, and individual training is self-study or one-on-one work with a teacher.

Why there is no individual approach in regular schools

For several reasons, individual approach is rarely found in traditional schools.

Class overcrowding. Sometimes up to 30 children study in one team, and the lesson lasts only 45 minutes. A busy teacher does not have time to work separately with each and pay attention. There are also no forces and resources left for the introduction of new formats.

Sharpened for templates. Traditional education does not imply liberties: even creative essays are written according to a certain structure. The progress of children is assessed according to the criteria of the Federal State Educational Standard, which are mainly aimed at combining disparate programs and bringing them into a system. Although the Federal State Educational Standards are often updated, in fact it is difficult to introduce new formats and deviate from the usual methodology.

Lack of funding. An individual approach often involves tutor support – assigning a personal mentor to the child, who motivates and helps during study. Teachers, as a rule, do not have the opportunity to take on additional workloads, and the school does not want to hire individual employees.

The ethical side of the issue. Many are of the opinion that school does not need an individual approach. As a rule, traditional educational institutions try to eradicate differences between students – from school uniforms to the same requirements for children regardless of their abilities. It is believed that the school sets generally accepted standards that must be met. And “singling out” children will develop a sense of envy and rivalry.

Where individual attention is given

If you feel your child is not suited to standard, large group education, consider alternative education. Here are some options.

Private schools with a personal touch. Classes in private schools are much smaller, allowing the teacher to pay attention to each child. Each author’s school has its own approach to education. As a rule, students are given more freedom, and the main emphasis is not on cramming facts, but on educating a personality. Some schools do not even have classes and lessons in the usual sense.

Waldorf schools. Waldorf schools allow the child to learn at their own pace, without coercion or grading. The child himself chooses what interests him, and realizes his strengths under the gentle guidance of the teacher.

Montessori Schools. These schools are ideal for children with different learning styles: auditory learners who learn by hearing, visual learners who learn better through sight, and kinesthetic learners who experience the world through tactile sensations.

The essence of Montessori pedagogy is to give the child the freedom to explore the world – each student learns what attracts him now. Adults play a secondary role – they do not instruct the child, but help to become interested in the subject, find answers to questions and figure it out on their own. Children learn at their own pace, without competing with each other.

Online schools. Here, education is often personalized: for example, in the Foxford Home School and Externship, children can study along an individual route – they can independently choose methods, pace and profile disciplines. Each student can be assigned a mentor who supervises him throughout his studies. There are also tutors – specialists with pedagogical and psychological education, who help to build a learning path with an emphasis on the strengths of the student.

How personalization is applied

Here’s how educators achieve personalized learning in a group.

Different methods are involved. At the Foxford Home Online School, each teacher connects a variety of formats: videos, documentaries, mobile interactive games, and even memes. Physics teacher Alexander Ulitin is convinced that if you find the right approach, anyone can master the subject.

Before introducing a concept or formula, I will dance, show a video, draw a picture or give an example from life. Then I will explain the essence in simple words. And only after that I will name the term.

Teachers prepare texts for children with highlighted key words, illustrations, tips. They bring things and objects suitable for the topic of the lesson that can be considered. Come up with tasks of different levels of complexity.

A variety of materials and explanation options is a guarantee that the topic will be understood by all students in the class, regardless of the level of preparation.

Establish contact with each child. In an individual approach, it is important to study the characteristics and needs of a particular student. This is done through personal conversations, surveys, diagnostics and testing.

For example, the Foxford online school provides consultations for future students, where you can decide on an educational route and understand what the child needs from learning. Someone wants to enter a foreign university and focus on a foreign language, someone dreams of a specialized lyceum after the ninth grade and wants to focus on the necessary disciplines, and someone needs a basic education to get a certificate.

Help your child set goals and review their progress. There are tutors at the Foxford home online school – they diagnose strengths and help choose a training profile, formulate goals and set priorities. All tutors have a higher psychological and pedagogical education.

There are also mentors – they hold regular one-on-one meetings with the child aimed at developing soft skills (time management skills, communication, creative thinking), monitor the child’s workload, help him allocate time, advise the family on the learning process and progress , motivate and encourage.
