Pancake day in England: features and traditions

July 22, 2023

Features of the holiday

The British are also very fond of celebrating Maslenitsa. True, they call it differently – Pancake Day. The holiday is celebrated not for a week, but only for one day.

Pancake Day is celebrated before the onset of Lent. Each holiday falls on a Tuesday. The British also call this day “Shrove Tuesday”, which means “Fat Tuesday”.

Unlike the classic Russian Maslenitsa, which symbolizes the farewell to winter and is rooted in deep paganism, Pancake Day is a very religious holiday.

It is usually celebrated in the family circle. The heart of the holiday are pancakes, which English housewives cook on their own.

Festive dishes

Approximately 2 weeks before the holiday, a huge number of different pancakes, toppings for them and all kinds of “accessories” appear in stores. We also sell special flour (several types!) for making pancakes at home.

You can also find pancake mixes on sale:

  • Dry. To make pancakes, you just need to dilute the mixture with water. The dough is laid out on the pan immediately from the bottle.
  • Liquid. They are the usual dough for making pancakes. Such mixtures are sold in compact containers.

Ready-made pancakes come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from tiny to extra large. The British eat pancakes with various jams, syrups (lemon or maple) or whipped cream. They also love American-style pancakes.

The British have not only pancakes, but also bleeny (pronounced almost the same as the Russian word for pancakes). These are very small pancakes that look like pancakes. They are intended for serving red fish, or caviar.

Hot ginger beer is the main drink. It is seasoned with cinnamon or any other spices.

Traditions

Pancake Day is a time for festivities, interesting games and fun. One of the most interesting traditions of this kind holiday is the pancake race.

It is as follows: at 11:00 am in the city square, near the church, 30 people in aprons and headdresses, pre-selected as a result of a survey, gather.

With the first ringing of the bell, the contestants begin to cook pancakes. With the second ring, they start the race. The main task is to toss the pancake in the pan three times without dropping it. At the end of the race, festivities begin.

A fun tradition dating back to the 15th century. According to legend, once a resident of the town of Olney, baking pancakes, heard a bell ring in a nearby church, which notified the parishioners about the beginning of the service.

The woman was afraid to be late, but at the same time it was impossible to tear herself away from the hearth, where pancakes were baked for the whole family. So she grabbed a frying pan with a pancake and rushed to the church. At the entrance she met the vicar, who praised her for her piety and gave her a beautiful prayer book.

The old custom was not always part of the culture of England. However, in the middle of the 20th century, “pancake races” were officially held and have been organized every year since then.
