Wildfires in Canada and smoke in New York

Recently, people have begun to move more often from the daily rising in price of New York to cheaper Philadelphia. Basically, they rent housing, do not buy. The exception is older people. In the central part of the city, housing is represented by apartments in high-rise buildings. In residential areas, people live in townhouses. Prices depend on the safety, cleanliness of the area, the rating of the nearest schools and the condition of the house.

Average apartment rental prices:

Studio 600 – 1,300 USD (250,000 – 550,000 tenge)

Two-room (for l + bedroom) 800-1,500 dollars (337,000-633,000 tenge)

You can find cheaper ones in less prosperous areas, but this is not worth doing. You won’t be able to fall asleep and wake up peacefully there: the areas are quite dangerous. In Philadelphia, crime and poverty border on prosperity and luxury.

The average salary depends on the person’s activities. One of the popular tourist activities is visiting various farms (flower, fruit, berry, vegetable). In the warm season, locals go to the coast, and in winter they go skiing on Mount Pocono. Small events are held in the city every week. That was the case, at least before the pandemic. Among the largest events, one can single out the annual Made in America music festival, where the most popular artists of the country perform. There are also auto shows, restaurant weeks, wine weeks, a science festival.

There are more than enough cultural sites in Philadelphia, if you want to relax with friends, dance or listen to music, there are bars and clubs for every taste and budget. The most accessible type of recreation is spending time in the park. There are many of them here, the city is green.

Food prices, relative to average earnings, are not particularly high. The average price of a monthly basket of products is from 300 to 450 dollars (128,000 tenge and 192,000 tenge, respectively).

Mostly Philadelphians buy in markets, and various fairs are sometimes held on weekends. Bazarov, as in Kazakhstan, I have not met here. Something similar can be found at the Italian Market in the Italian district of the city.

There are a lot of catering places here. In fast food establishments, the average check per person is around 10 dollars, in cafes and restaurants from 20 to 40 dollars. There are about a dozen very expensive establishments in the city, where the price for dinner for two people starts at least 200 dollars (more than 85 thousand tenge). They are visited by residents with above-average incomes. The food may not differ much from more affordable establishments, but the quality of service varies. Here, almost everyone leaves 15-20% of the check to the waiters – this is a gesture of good manners and gratitude.

Philadelphia has a great history and clean air – in Almaty I was tormented by allergies. The city is conveniently located: near New York, Washington and the ocean. In general, you can easily go on vacation with friends and family – the trip will not take much time. Green surroundings save you from the bustle of the city.

An undoubted advantage is that the police, ambulance and fire service quickly come to the call. Philadelphians are distinguished by a responsible and conscious attitude to health issues: the majority wear masks and maintain social distance.
