I came to TARA during my senior year with the support and tenacity of the leadership council and my classmates! They truly are miracle workers and wholeheartedly care for the school, the students, and meaningful experiential education. I would have never been able to travel and experience the trips and productions we went on and were a part of (in Covid times) had I been anywhere else. The classes are small, lovely, experiential, and taught by passionate teachers. The trips are, life-changing, perspective-altering, academic, confidence cultivating, and provide time to connect with your peers and learn more about yourself. As a host student, my time at TARA was significantly different than my non-host peers, but the experience taught me so much that I will take into life…. Where and how “Shine on Bright” was filmed
Filming on SHINE, SHINE BRIGHT began in Georgia in March 2018. The film was filmed at various locations in the southern states, which filmmakers passed off as the neighborhood of a provincial farming town in Kansas, where Brandon grew up after his spacecraft made an emergency landing on Earth.
Brier’s house was found in the town of Newnan – the farm was in the middle of a field, and a pond was dug nearby. “It was a very old house with a lot of history,” says production designer Patrick M. Sullivan Jr. about the building of the beginning of the XIX century, in which most of the film takes place. “We hung wallpaper here and there to create a charming Midwestern and rural atmosphere. We wanted to create a sense of calm and peacefulness before the frenzy kicks in. We needed to show isolation from the outside world so that no one would doubt that Brandon’s victims were helpless. The location is very secluded.” nine0003
“Bryer Farm can tell the story of an entire generation, and Elizabeth wanted to feel her character in this space,” Jaroveski adds. – Tori has her own little hobby – she is fond of grunge, so in the interior of the house punk rock more or less harmoniously combined with American farm life. It’s like someone splashed bright watercolor on an American pastoral.

Sullivan Jr. designed the film sets in classic American style. The artist used colors typical of comics, but made them deeper to emphasize the dark component of the plot. Designer Autumn Steed was asked to design Brandon’s costume, which would eloquently declare that the superhero turns to the side of evil. In her work, the designer used various shades of blue and red. “We wanted the colors of the clothes to tell their story,” she explains. – Blue is identified with Brandon’s life on Earth, and red – with his hostile alien entity. As the character became more violent, we added more red to the gamut.” nine0003
When Brandon learns about his inhuman abilities, he decides to make himself a costume – a mask and a cloak. Over the course of several months, Steed experimented with different designs, trying to find the right combination. “I knew from the very beginning that the costume had to combine the bravado of legendary superheroes with the darkness of old-school slashers – this became a key feature of the costume,” explains Steed.
“We wanted to show that Brandon could make this suit himself. There should not have been a feeling that it was sewn by professionals. In the work we used shoelaces, strings and other materials that can be found in the barn. nine0003
Steed tried about 120 different designs and combinations of masks and capes, based on a tie-front wrestling mask. “The simplicity of the design we settled on became a major challenge for us,” the designer explains the paradox. “We wanted the costume to look like it was made by a teenager; to be scary; to look like a superhero costume.” Ultimately, Steed opted for the soft yet durable material that Brandon was supposed to have had since childhood. “Brandon made his suit out of a blanket,” says the designer. – At the beginning of the film, this is his favorite “blanket”. From this material he makes both a mask and a cloak. nine0003
Brandon’s supernatural abilities have helped filmmakers instill fear in the audience. Director Steve Yarovesky notes that abilities such as levitation, laser vision, inhuman strength and unthinkable speed, reminiscent of teleportation, were the most terrible.
“I wanted him to move like a fierce and unpredictable predator,” he says.
Jarovesky worked with Trixter’s visual effects team, who had previously worked with James Gunn on the effects of film GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 . “In the early stages of developing special effects, we tried to add computer-rendered flames and other elements,” the director recalls, adding that in the end it was decided to simplify the effect as much as possible. “We decided that it would be quite shocking to move from a distance at arm’s length, and focused on making this effect as realistic as possible.”
The sound the cape made when Brandon attacked a victim has become a hallmark of horror films. Executive Producer Simon Hatt says: “In the films of the franchise A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET The audience always knew when Freddy Krueger was approaching by the distinctive sound of the blades scraping across the surface. In the movie BABADOOK , the demon also had a very specific sound.
We used the sound of Brandon’s cloak fluttering as a signal that something terrible was about to happen. It seems like a ghost is flying in front of the camera.”
In one of the film’s scariest scenes, when Brandon decides to take revenge on an unsuspecting waitress at a local coffee shop, the raincoat barely comes into view. However, viewers immediately understand that the unfortunate waitress is doomed. When Brandon leaves this place, not a single whole piece of furniture remains in the cafe. nine0003
The plastic make-up for this scene was developed by Fractured FX, and digital special effects were handled by Trixter. In the scene, shards of broken glass dig into Brandon’s victim’s eye. For this episode, Fractured had to create a full-size cast of actress Becky Wahlstrom’s head, including a silicone eye filled with fake blood. “After the shot with the fake waitress head, Becky had to stand in front of the camera herself,” recalls Hatt. “With the help of a special effect, we cut out a plastic eye and fixed it on the actress’s eye socket to create the illusion that she was pulling the pieces out of her own eye.

“Ultimately, the combination of real and special effects was optimal,” Jaroveski says. “We got a kind of trick that the audience can’t figure out.”
During filming, all the actors were able to enjoy all the delights of a dynamic story, atmospheric filming, heartbreaking scenes, and some were even lucky enough to shoot stunt scenes. The scene of Tory’s brutal confrontation with Brandon, who gained full strength and turned into a bloodthirsty monster, was filmed over several weeks. nine0003
“Shooting the final fight between mother and son was a lot of fun for me because it was the climax of the film,” says Jarovesky. – In fact, we destroyed the house, and it was very cool. We set fire to huge metal plates, which were fixed on the walls, and then during the editing we finished painting Brandon flying through these walls. I remember how Elizabeth saw all this madness. I told her: “So, we will hang you at this window …”, and she told me: “Cool! Let’s do that! I’m ready!” nine0003
“These films are physically demanding for the actors,” continues the director.
– You have to run, crawl and constantly smear yourself with some kind of liquid. Horror movies exhaust literally everyone on the set. Not only is it physically difficult to film in them, they are also physically difficult to film.”
However, Banks was not afraid of difficulties. “I love doing all my own stunts,” the actress admits. – So at every opportunity I come off in full. Sometimes it’s a lot of fun.” nine0003
For the scenes in which Brandon takes off, Dunn was wearing a special vest for the lounge. The actor says that he has seen firsthand what it’s like to have superpowers. “It’s a special vest, not like the one on the winch in Yosemite Park,” Dunn says of the special equipment. – It’s much more comfortable. History
At the end of the 18th century, Cedar Shoals was a trading settlement on the site of the modern city of Athens.
On January 27, 1785, the Georgia General Assembly granted Abraham Baldwin’s charter for the University of Georgia, the first public support for the university. Sixteen years later, in 1801, a committee of trustees chose a site for the university on a hill above Cedar Shoals. On July 25, John Milege, one of the trustees (and later governor of Georgia), purchased 633 acres (2.6 km²) from Daniel Easley and donated it to the university. nine0003
The first building of the University of Georgia was made of logs. The city grew and land near the college was sold to raise money for additional schools. By the time the first students graduated from the university in 1804, Athens consisted of three houses, three shops and several other buildings in front of Front Street, now known as Broad Street (eng. Broad Street ). The old university building, built in 1823 and named after Benjamin Franklin, still stands in front of the main university building. This brick building is now called the Old College.

Athens officially became a city in December 1806 with a three-member government. The university continues to grow, as does the city. Athens became known as the “Manchester of the South”, after the town in England famous for its mills. In 1833, a group of Athens businessmen led by James Camack built one of the first railroads in Georgia, connecting Athens and Marthasville (now Atlanta).
During the American Civil War, Athens became an important arms supply center when the New Orleans Armory was moved to what is now the Chicopee Building. Fortifications can still be found along sections of the Okonee River between the college and Okony St. nine0003
During the reconstruction after the devastation of the civil war, Athens continued to grow. The form of government was changed by the government to a mayor-council with a new city charter on August 24, 1872, along with Captain Henry Buss as the city’s first mayor. Henry Buss was instrumental in the city’s rapid growth after the Civil War.
After taking office as mayor, he worked in the railroad industry, which contributed to the growth of railroads in the region. The freed slaves moved to the city, the construction of factories and new educational institutions began. Three newspapers created by former black slaves appeared in the city – the Athens Blade, the Athens Clipper and the Progressive Era newspaper. nine0003
In 1880, city services began to operate more tightly in Athens. The Athens Police Department was founded in 1881 and the first public schools were opened in 1885-1888. Telephone service was introduced in 1882 by the Bell Telephone Company. A program of paving the streets and building trams began in 1888.
By its centenary in 1901, Athens has become a much changed city. The new town hall was completed in 1904. The Morton Theater was built where famous black actors and musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Cub Calloway, and Duke Ellington played their performances. The first high-rise building in Athens was built in 1908, the seven-story building of the Southern Mutual Insurance Company.
During World War II, the US Navy built new buildings and airstrips as a training facility for naval pilots. In 1954, the US Navy selected Atense as the site for the Marine Corps Fleet School. New schools are planned to be built by 2011.
