I am excited to welcome you to the 2022-23 school year! We remain totally dedicated to the success of your children and look forward to your continued involvement. Our school theme this year is “We are Family,” which supports our continued goals of relationship building and individualized instruction.

After a year of staggered online classes, our school-wide goal this year is to fill potential academic losses by accelerating instruction and learning. This means students need to come to school prepared to work hard each and every day. Our teachers commit to plan and teach with each and every student in mind.

In support of our academic goals, we are proud to be a “mindful school.” A full description of our mindfulness program is included at the end of this newsletter. Our mindfulness program was awarded the 2018 “Golden Bell Award” by the Arizona School Boards Association as the Arizona elementary program of the year. I encourage all students to take advantage of our resources.

To further support our acceleration this year, we are proud to have an award-winning instructional program. Laveen Elementary was named a 2020 “Exemplary Title 1 School” by the Arizona Department of Education in the category of teachers and instruction.

As a district, we will continue with “standard-based grading,” which assesses a student’s proficiency level in regards to state academic standards. Grades are based on a student’s ability to demonstrate his/her academic proficiency through a variety of activities and assessments.

As parents, I encourage you to monitor your student’s progress by logging into our online gradebook through the parent portal on our district website, www.laveenschools.org. If you are new to ParentVUE, your activation code will be provided to you at Meet the Teacher Night or you can visit our main office for a replacement.

On the first day of school, all students will be given a new ID badge, plastic holder, and lanyard. Students are expected to wear their ID every day as part of their school uniform. An ID is required to enter onto campus, ride the bus, receive cafeteria meals, and check-out library books. Students who lose their ID will need to replace it at the cost of $2. They can purchase the new ID in the main office. If students wish to purchase a new lanyard or a plastic cover, they may do so for $1 each or they may wear any other school-appropriate lanyard.

In regards to daily student attendance, please remember that students are expected to be at school each day unless they are ill. We ask that you schedule all appointments outside of the school day to avoid classroom disruptions and missed instruction. Lastly, do not forget that each Friday is “Spirit Wear Friday” and school spirit wear may be worn as part of the school uniform. Spirit wear is available at www.laveenspiritwear.com. Thank you for your continued support of your child’s education and please contact me or our front office if we can ever be of assistance.

Go Hawks!

Why choose Laveen Elementary?

LEARN WHY

Laveen Elementary School is a “mindful school,” named a 2019 Exemplary Title 1 School by the Arizona Department of Education and awarded the 2018 Arizona School Board’s Golden Bell Award for the most promising school program of the year.

Mindfulness is about developing mental and emotional strength in children. As our students become more mindful, they develop the knowledge and attitudes needed to thrive in a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty, and exponential change. Laveen Elementary School strives to educate and empower all of its students to do their personal best by making responsible choices that positively affect their mind, body and spirit.

Components of the Laveen mindfulness program include: weekly yoga sessions before school for students and families, teachers trained in mindful breathing techniques, a mindful “reset room” for students, and school counselors trained by mindfulschools. org. In addition, “Second Step,” a social-emotional learning program equipped to help children thrive, is offered at all grade levels each week.

Avalanches on Elbrus

Avalanches are considered one of the typical dangers that threaten the safety of climbers in the mountains. However, in order to understand the real level of danger and ways to avoid it, first of all, you should understand what is an avalanche?

An avalanche is a mass of snow that, under the influence of gravity, at a certain moment begins to move down the slope, often creating serious problems and danger for people in the immediate vicinity. Avalanches differ in the mechanism of formation, speed of movement, kinetic energy and degree of danger. Without delving into the topic of various types of avalanches, it is necessary to highlight the main thesis regarding avalanche danger in general – an avalanche is a seasonal phenomenon. Avalanches are most dangerous during high intensity snowfalls – for Elbrus, these are the winter months and early spring. Therefore, in the event that you plan to climb Elbrus during the official season – from June to September, then no danger of avalanches threatens you. nine0003

It is traditionally believed that avalanche danger is most characteristic of various types of skiing, especially in the form of freeride (off-piste skiing). Of course, athletes – skiers, are at much greater risk of falling into an avalanche than climbers. Firstly, the peak of the ski season coincides with the peak of avalanche danger, and secondly, skiers often provoke avalanches themselves, skiing on slopes overloaded with snow. A large number of different devices have been developed for skiers that reduce the risk of falling into an avalanche and simplify the search for victims in the event of an accident. These are various types of avalanche backpacks and pneumatic systems that allow you to stay on the surface of an avalanche if you get into it, numerous electronic devices and beacons indicating the location of the victim. All these devices are used in professional skiing, but are of little use for mountaineering. The climber is armed against an avalanche with his own rationality, tactical training. Even at the peak of the avalanche season, with a properly planned route and traffic schedule, you can reduce the likelihood of being caught in an avalanche to almost zero. However, this statement also works in the opposite direction. When analyzing climbing accidents associated with falling into an avalanche, as a rule, the fact of gross violations of the elementary rules of avalanche safety is revealed – avoiding the route line, choosing an unfavorable time of movement, crossing avalanche-prone slopes in a bundle. nine0003

During an increased avalanche danger, the highest probability of avalanches coming down at the very foot of Elbrus, where the steepness of the slopes of the gorge allows the accumulation of large masses of snow and, in the event of an avalanche, the acceleration of the snow mass to a dangerous speed. In this regard, the Terskol-Azau region is considered the most dangerous, where avalanches come down many times every winter. On this section, the local administration has taken measures to prevent the accumulation of significant masses of snow – along the entire line of the road, special artillery pieces have been installed, which, during snowfalls, with the help of shells, provoke small avalanches, preventing the formation of large amounts of snow on the slopes. Even during the winter season, the slopes of Elbrus are considered less dangerous in terms of avalanches than, for example, the slopes of Mount Cheget, located opposite Elbrus in the Main Caucasian Range. Cheget is of little interest to climbers, but skiers are very fond of the slopes of this mountain. In 2017, during a large avalanche on Cheget, 8 skiers ended up in it. nine0003

Accidents associated with falling into an avalanche of climbers happen much less frequently, and, as already mentioned, are the result of gross tactical errors when choosing a route and traffic schedule. In order to protect yourself from avalanche danger as much as possible, first of all, you should choose the right season for climbing – the probability of avalanche formation and descent during the summer season is close to zero. If you climb Elbrus in the winter season or off-season, you should follow a safe route line and avoid avalanche-prone slopes. The upper part of the routes to Elbrus – above the level of 3500-4000 meters, does not pose a significant avalanche danger – the slight steepness of the slopes and the constant strong wind do not allow snow to accumulate in the amount that can lead to avalanches. nine0003

MCS AlexClimb mountaineering school organizes all Elbrus climbing programs along 4 classic routes, only at a time when there is no risk of avalanche danger both on Elbrus itself and on the ridges adjacent to it. Thus, for the participants of our ascents, the topic of avalanche danger has only an informational value – for 20 years of work on routes of varying complexity, we have not had a single case of any of the participants in our programs getting into an avalanche.
