IN TEXAS – Our Texas – Russian Newspaper in Houston, Dallas, San-Antonio, Austin, Texas

    TEXAS MADE A CHOICE

Texans maintained the status quo in the November 8 midterm elections, re-electing Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, and Attorney General Ken Paxton with similar majority votes. The results of all elections can be found at results.texas-election.com/races.

    • Greg Abbott won 55.11% with 4,335,425 votes and Beto O’Rourke, who came in second, got 43.52% or 3,424,074 votes.
    • nine0005 Dan Patrick won 54.08%, or 4,216,864 votes, against Democratic nominee Mike Collier, who won 43.18%, receiving 3,367,033 votes.

    • Ken Paxton trailed with 53.75% or 4,178,494 votes against runner-up Rochelle Mercedes Garza who received 43.36% or 3,371,361 votes.
    • Sid Miller was re-elected Minister of Agriculture with 46.63% or 4,372,741 votes, compared to his opponent Susan Hayes with 43.37% or 3,349,247 votes. nine0006
    • Wayne Christian was re-elected Minister of Railways with 55.7% or 4,296,565 votes, beating top contender Luke Warford with 40.24% or 3,104,474 votes.

In San Antonio Henry Cuellar was re-elected to the US House of Representatives, beating Republican nominee Cassy Garcia 56.6% to 43.4%.

Austin’s mayoral race will be held in the second round. None of the six candidates won more than 50%, so voters will choose from the top two candidates — former Austin Mayor and State Senator Kirk Watson and State Rep. Celia Israe — in a runoff election on December 13. nine0059

In Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins was re-elected, as was District Attorney John Crusoth, who won 59.36% of the vote to Faith Johnson’s 40.64%. The city also passed Proposition A, which would raise taxes on hotel stays from 13 percent to 15 percent, and the funds would be used to renovate Fair Park and the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

In Fort Worth , the new Tarrant County Judge to replace Glen Wheatley will be Tim O’Hara, former mayor of Farmers Branch, supported by Donald Trump; he defeated Democratic Party nominee Deborah Peoples, who ran twice for mayor of Fort Worth. nine0059

In Houston , polling stations experienced problems with some not opening on time, and there were disruptions that led to delays and temporary closures. A group called the Texas Organizing Project successfully petitioned Harris County to extend voting time to 8 p.m., but the Texas Supreme Court ordered Harris County election officials to separate all ballots that were cast after hours.

Texas State University at San Marcos also experienced problems with five of the eight vehicles, resulting in waiting times of four hours or more.

Five cities—Denton, San Marcos, Killeen, Elgin, and Harker Heights—have approved proposals to decriminalize small-scale marijuana possession, following in the footsteps of Austin, which passed a similar proposal in May.

For the first time, voters were not given the opportunity of a “direct ticket” to quickly vote for the entire party. It was necessary to choose a candidate for each individual race. nine0059

WHY MANY SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED ON ELECTION DAY

If you’ve been waiting to vote before Election Day, you’ve found that the nearest polling station is in a school. There is nothing new in this. But what has changed is the number of schools closing on election day for safety reasons.

School districts in Dallas, Fort Worth, Richardson, San Annotnio and Austin are closing. And it’s not unique to these areas, it’s not even unique to Texas. We see the same thing all over the country. nine0059

The exception was Houston ISD, the largest school district in Texas. They didn’t have a day off.

It’s all about the Texas Code that schools must be available to vote if needed. So with polling officers and observers there, the FBI set up a special security force to make sure everything was in order.

    HOLIDAY DINNER UP

Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away, and if you’re planning a traditional dinner, it will cost you more this year. nine0059

The latest figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that inflation has eased, but was still high in October.

Consumer inflation reached 7.7% in October compared to last year and 0.4% compared to September, the Ministry of Labor reported on Thursday, November 3.

Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that the cost of turkeys increased by 17% from October 2021 to October 2022. Compared to last year, the cost of butter increased by 26%, canned fruits and vegetables – by 18%, and potatoes – by 15%. nine0059

Russell Boening, president of the Texas Farm Bureau, has tracked the rise in food prices over the past year.

The Texas Farm Bureau estimates that in 2021, the average traditional Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people cost $53. Estimated cost is based on a list of items including: turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, buttered buns, peas, cranberries, vegetable tray, pumpkin pie, coffee and milk.

Boening predicts that the same Thanksgiving dinner will cost even more this year. nine0059

The WFAA reviewed the entire Texas Farm Bureau listing. When comparing the total (tax included) of the cheapest groceries at three grocery stores, both in-store and online, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people would cost at least $65.

Walmart is offering Thanksgiving dinner to families this year at last year’s price.

What about time spent with friends and family? It is priceless.

    RURAL PROBLEMS

According to the US Census Bureau, 2.8 million households in Texas do not have access to broadband internet. This problem disproportionately affects rural communities, where low population density prevents private companies from building broadband infrastructure.

In a cluster of northeast Texas counties, less than two-thirds of households have high-speed broadband access, according to the State Broadband Authority, and those who do pay high prices for it. nine0059

According to a 2019 Ericsson analysis, residents of Deep East Texas, which includes 11 rural counties such as Angelina and Newton, pay on average four times more for internet services than residents of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area .

The fact that rural Texas is largely unable to connect to the rest of the world with high-speed Internet is an illustration of a long-standing division that now threatens the very way of life that is fundamental to the state as a whole. nine0059

Rural Texas, along with the food, cotton, and other manufactured goods it exports, contributed more than $21.2 billion to the state’s economy in 2019, according to the Texas Almanac. Cattle and cotton are the state’s leading exports. Along with oil and gas, tourism, and the public sector, the rural economy makes up a significant portion of the Texas economy.

    OYSTER SEASON STARTS

Commercial and recreational oyster season began in Texas on November 1, but most of the state’s oyster reefs are closed to harvest. nine0059

This follows last year’s season when most of the reefs closed by mid-December, leading to clashes between industry stakeholders and government wildlife officials over how to manage the resources.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) closes reefs if specimens are returned with too many small oysters or too few oysters overall. The idea is to give the oysters time to recover. nine0059

This year, 20 of the 29 oyster picking locations in the state are closed due to the November 1st start of the season.

Oysters grow about one inch per year and must reach three inches before they can be legally harvested. And although the samples did not contain enough oysters larger than market size to open the reefs, they did show that the oysters were recovering.

Oysters are extremely sensitive to changes in water quality and a drought in much of the state could put additional pressure on them in the coming months. Over the past decade, Texas oysters have endured numerous hurricanes, droughts, and heavy rains; they perform important ecological functions such as preventing shoreline erosion and filtering water. It just takes time for these populations to recover. nine0059

All the closures put pressure on the oyster business. They say it harms their livelihood. Alex Gutierrez has been fishing for oysters for 35 years and says he used to look forward to passing the business on to his son. Now he is not sure that his son can be a second generation fisherman.

Gutierrez said that because there are so many closed reefs, he fears that too many boats will gather on just a few reefs, which will also crush those places and force them to close. nine0059

“What happens when you see 100-150 boats in one small area where there aren’t many reefs? – he said. “I feel like we’ve been set up again.”

    WHAT TEXAS OFFERS FOR THANKSGIVING

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend officially marks the start of travel season, which means you can find a lot more to do than just enjoy a turkey dinner.

A lot of fun happens in the Lone Star State when the city’s Christmas trees light up their lights just after Thanksgiving. nine0059

    San Antonio River Parade

The famous Ford Holiday River Parade begins in San Antonio the day after Thanksgiving.

The 41st annual Ford Holiday River Parade is an urban tradition with a spectacular hour-long parade along the San Antonio River. This year’s theme is “Tastes and Traditions of the World”.

The River Lighting Parade and Ceremony, always held the day after Thanksgiving, will feature 28 decorated boats and over 2,250 lights strung along the river. nine0059

The parade usually attracts about 150,000 spectators, lined up along the river.

    Dallas Cowboys Game

Every year on Thanksgiving Day, the Dallas football team hosts guests from the NFL, and this event will be remembered for a long time. You can also take part in all sorts of holiday events: seasonal festivities kick off in nearby Fort Worth with its annual Parade of Lights, and the Dallas Theater Center hosts the annual family holiday production of A Christmas Carol. nine0059

    Houston HEB Holiday Parade

The Houston HEB Holiday Parade has been an annual Thanksgiving tradition for 70 years and is one of the largest in the state. Marking the official start of the downtown festive season, it usually starts early in the morning on Thanksgiving Day. Some of the highlights include extravagantly decorated wheeled platforms, marching bands, performances by dance bands, as well as huge inflated figures floating past spectators. nine0059

    Visit Friederecksburg

Fredericksburg is a popular place in the Hill Country to have a great holiday weekend. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, the communal Christmas tree and the German pyramid are lit. It’s a unique twist on Christmas celebrations, blending the city’s rich German heritage with holiday spirit. If you like holiday lights, you should know that Fredericksburg was once named “one of the top 20 Christmas-lit towns” by Readers Digest. nine0059

Galveston’s Moody Gardens Festival of Lights

The Gulf Coast city of Galveston offers a variety of Thanksgiving events, including the popular historic Galvez Hotel hosting a Thanksgiving brunch. And the holidays at Moody Gardens have already begun and will last until early January. It features numerous attractions including the Festival of Lights, an arctic slide, meeting Santa, train rides, a 100-acre ice sculpture park created by master ice carvers who use 2 million pounds of ice to sculpt a holiday journey from north to South Pole, with snowy owls, penguins, polar bears, humpback whales, walruses and reindeer.
