Destin High School: About DHS
FIVE YEARS: THE VISION OF THE REALITYDHS COUNCIL CREATED IN 2016; DHS to open to students in 2021
For over 20 years, the people of Destin have recognized the need for a Destin High School. The ever-growing population, combined with the isolated location and deteriorating conditions in neighboring high schools, have strengthened the community’s resolve to turn the dream into reality. As voices of support grew in number, determination, and enthusiasm, the city council directed and approved the formation of the Destin High School Advisory Committee at the request of council member Prebble K. Ramswell in 2016. The committee looked into concerns about overcrowding/overcapacity circumstances at two schools serving Destin students – Niceville High School and Fort Walton Beach High School – as well as distance, wake times, commute times, and current conditions at the school. The committee also noted the fact that Destin students must cross two bridges in order to attend secondary school – bridges that are often closed in inclement weather, repairs and emergencies.
Other factors considered by the committee included an increase in the number of school-age children at the elementary and middle school levels, which will impact high school over time, especially at the K-5 level. Due to the influx of students and the need to increase the capacity of Destin Elementary School (DES), fifth grade students were transferred to Destin Middle School (DMS). Due to the sharp increase in the number of students, DES and DMS are now overcrowded. As of January 2019, both nearby high schools are loaded, which affects the options available through the FL Controlled Open Enrollment.
Due to geographic and capacity issues affecting the needs of students and their families in the Destin area, the community supported the idea of a new high school. The overwhelming public supported the construction of Destin High School, designed to meet the needs of all students in the area. Residents and community stakeholders stepped up to lend a helping hand to make the dream a reality. To date, the board has raised close to $400,000 in cash donations in just a few months solely through grassroots efforts.
As support continues to grow, business owners, developers, non-profit organizations and even non-residents are eager to help realize this vision. The importance of comprehensive and unique curriculum options is clear, which is why we have asked the community for input on possible areas and programs. This input led to our decision to offer career academies and themed courses with direct application to our local community, in addition to the more traditional college prep course. Special attention will be given to such things as environmental and marine sciences, cybersecurity, tourism and construction (for example, carpentry; electricity; HVAC; masonry; plumbing; building technology).
These programs will be well supported by numerous local resources, enhance connection with the local community, and provide students with multiple higher education options that range from direct employment to college degrees. Destin High School’s educational program is designed to connect with the rich history, traditions, and culture of the Destin area, revolving around the military, fishing, and coastal environments, and the potential for unique partnerships with local universities and other organizations such as the military. and defense contractors, Gulfarium and the Choctawatchee Bay Alliance.
Because we understand that admission to a higher education institution is as unique as an individual student, Destin High School’s innovative educational programs include career interests that support students’ transition after graduation from high school directly into the workforce or their postgraduate education in vocational programs. training and college and university system.
Our primary goal is to prepare every Destin High School student for success in their chosen post-secondary program while meeting the needs of the Destin community as evidenced by our educational plan. As part of this ground-breaking, place-based approach, Destin High School offers hands-on learning opportunities through project-based learning, community-focused projects, and instills leadership in all students through student-led mentoring, resulting in a supportive culture that fosters success. all students.
Destin High School is committed to offering a first-class education that makes students feel safe and supported to achieve their post-secondary goals. Residents of Destin overwhelmingly prefer high school in our city, and current data confirms the need for it. In realizing the vision of Destin High School, we strive to benefit not only Destin, but the district as a whole.
The founders of Destin High School look forward to providing students from the Destin area with a modern school that includes modern technology, classrooms, teaching methods and amenities in a school located in their hometown. We envision that Destin High School will benefit families, businesses, and stakeholders in Okaloosa County.
