  • Hello Federal Way Public Schools Families and Community,

The 2022-23 school year is underway, and I’ve enjoyed seeing our scholars’ smiling faces back in our classrooms. Each new school year is filled with new possibilities, and I can’t wait to see how we grow together over the coming months.

In Federal Way Public Schools, we’re dedicated to every scholar’s academic success, and we’re committed to making each classroom an environment where scholars are engaged, supported, and challenged academically. We know that you, our parents, families and caregivers, are your child’s first teacher and are also critical partners in your child’s success. Here are three areas we’re focused on this school year:

    Accelerating Learning

We believe every scholar can learn and achieve at the highest level, and we remain committed to setting up each of our scholars for academic success. This year, across the district, we’re focusing on increasing rigor and engagement for our students, focusing on specific instructional strategies to help scholars feel more engaged, connected to their schoolwork, and supported.

Building Safe and Inclusive School Communities

Every school year we support safe and inclusive communities at all our schools, bus stops, playgrounds, and cafeterias by setting expectations with scholars and sharing how we can all help one another to achieve success. For the first full 30 days of school, we focused on setting expectations with scholars and building safe communities, where everyone feels welcome and ready to learn. We will continue to reteach these expectations throughout the year and look forward to your partnership in helping to reinforce these expectations at home.

We also know staff can benefit from additional support, and we have made investments in the well-being of our staff, including hiring a staff wellness coordinator, and making Talkspace available to all staff and their dependents.

    Strengthening Community and Family Partnerships

We’ve heard from many families, scholars, and community members who missed having in-person opportunities to engage when public health requirements limited these options, and from families who felt less connection to their child’s school as a result. We missed this connection too, and we are excited to refresh and recommit to our partnerships with families and community this fall by welcoming more families into our school buildings for family events and family advisory committees. We will also be seeking school volunteers, and we are eager to have you on our campuses helping out in our schools. To learn more about volunteering in our schools, visit www.fwps.org/Volunteer or check out the back page of this Scholar Chronicle.

Strengthening the connections between schools, homes, and the greater Federal Way community means greater support for our scholars and families, and greater success for all as a result. Together, we can make a difference in our community.

    In Partnership,

    Dr. Dani Pfeiffer

    Superintendent

Europe and Asia seek ways to counter Washington’s dictate – Free Press nine0003 Dukgyn An

, according to the Euractiv website.

The minister said joint action should minimize the “discriminatory impact” of US law. “There is huge room for the EU and Korea to work together to make the provisions of the IRA more WTO compliant and not create unnecessary problems for strategically important parts of our industry,” he said.

The South Korean minister added that his country and the EU “have a huge opportunity to work together and to make the IRA system more WTO compliant so as not to create unnecessary problems for strategically important industries.” nine0005

At the same time, achieving an adjustment to this law in the short term is a rather difficult task, Dukgyn An believes. He is convinced that the European Union should take measures similar to those taken in South Korea and some other states. In his opinion, the adoption of the US inflation control law can be compared to “opening a Pandora’s box.

The said law, as you know, provides for a number of protectionist measures aimed at supporting American industry. In particular, the allocation of huge subsidies to manufacturers of electric vehicles and batteries, which is blatant discrimination against manufacturers of these products from the EU, South Korea and other countries.

It should be noted that earlier the IRA caused considerable concern in a number of European countries. Thus, French President Emmanuel Macron called on the states of the Old World “to work out a strong European response to this law within the next few months.” Moreover, according to Macron, work on the answer should be completed “before the end of the first quarter of 2023.” Only with this answer will the European industry remain competitive against the backdrop of actions taken overseas. nine0005

Economist, leading expert of the Center for Political Technologies Nikita Maslennikov notes that although the American law concerns electric vehicles and batteries, it has, so to speak, an open date and space for replenishing the list.

– Today these are electric vehicles, and tomorrow it may include the widest range of products, the import of which the American side considers accelerating inflation and having a negative impact on the climate agenda. This stresses everyone. In relations with Europe, the Americans acted in unilateral interests, although they had previously assured that some kind of compromise solution would be found. nine0005

But as a result, Europeans will now have to subsidize their automakers. This causes a subsidy race and is a violation of WTO rules, free trade rules. Thus, the conflict can grow to extremely unpleasant consequences. After all, other countries are beginning to try on the situation for themselves: if the Europeans got it today, then why can’t we get it tomorrow?

“SP”: – How serious can the consequences be for Europe and countries of other continents? nine0004

– It cannot be said that the situation for the economies of these countries will become critical, but political consequences are also important here – after all, there is a certain misunderstanding, distrust. The situation risks dragging on for a long period if the United States does not take some decisions to mitigate the negative consequences. Because it will have a negative impact on world trade, as it will distort the market prices for products.

“SP”: – Is it possible to say that the American act on combating inflation, if not repeal, then strikes at the agreement on the transatlantic trade and investment partnership? nine0004

– This is a matter of interpretation of the agreement. The Europeans believe that it contradicts, the Americans are convinced that this is a reason for negotiations. Of course, transatlantic cooperation cannot be abolished by one law — it has a too long history and scope, but we are already seeing its complication and difficulty in finding compromises. And the traditional Euro-Atlantic contradictions are not going anywhere either, so the current situation is such a good reason to speak out about mutual grievances in relations between Europe and America, which is what is happening. nine0005

And other countries join in, because the American act contains rather vague and “rubber” interpretations that allow them to be used as a lever of pressure in relations not only with Europeans. With the same South Korea, for example. Also, American partners are considering such ideas as the return of high-tech industries to the States, as prospects for disrupting value chains and industrial cooperation.

“SP”: – But the same South Korea seems to have a special position caused by its proximity to the DPRK. Does this mean that Washington is ready to sacrifice the economic well-being of its strategic ally? nine0004

– I think the whole range of political bonuses, security guarantees will remain. Another thing is that in the economic sphere, Seoul sees possible losses and considers it its duty to draw the partner’s attention to this.

“SP”: – If the laws adopted in the United States are a violation of WTO rules, does this mean that the rules of this association do not apply, given the same anti-Russian sanctions?

– Nobody argues with this. Violate. Because the panel of arbitrators who resolve trade disputes does not work. And the Americans take advantage of this, making it clear that in this case they do not care about such violations. This suggests that the WTO needs a very deep reform. This is a matter for the future, not even next year. As long as the NWO continues, the big economic world is unlikely to dare to take appropriate steps. nine0005

Tanker traffic jams near the Bosphorus: Turks are squeezing the oil transportation insurance market from the West about the fight against inflation, Washington simply stimulates the transfer of production from Europe and Asia, which worried the South Korean minister.

– That is, more favorable conditions are created for investing in enterprises that are already operating in various countries. And they will leave from there, including from South Korea. This is called unfair competition. nine0005

“SP”: – What is considered to be a violation of WTO rules . ..

– The United States has generally given itself the right to comply or not comply with the rules of the WTO and other international organizations for the development of industries and areas that they consider necessary. They, as you know, have a trade commission in Congress that imposes sanctions for unfair competition. In this case, it is clear that capital will be invested where it is most profitable. In reality, this will affect a very large number of industries, not only electric vehicles, but everything connected with it. nine0005

It’s no secret that South Korea has just succeeded in some positions in the auto industry, and now they are being taken away from a whole direction in the economy. That is, the States are destroying the WTO rules, which at one time were written with their active participation. Moreover, they do not hesitate to violate the interests of their own allies, as in the case of South Korea. Globalization was beneficial to them at one time – they put it into practice.
