History
Keller Center
The school was founded in 1969, with a first year of 20 students recruited in 1970. In 1974, Thomas F. Keller, a 1953 Duke University graduate, becomes its new dean, marking a turning point in the school’s history. Keller was able to quickly increase the school’s fortunes by organizing a $20 million capital raising campaign in 1978. for the construction of a school building, as well as to increase the number of MBA students from 60 to 250 and more than double the faculty. The campaign raised $24 million over three years, $10 million of which was donated by businessman and philanthropist J.B. Fukua. The name of the school has also changed, now it is called the Fukua School of Business.
J.B. Fuqua was raised by his grandparents on a tobacco farm in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Fuqua began his acquaintance with Duke University when he was a teenager ordering books by mail from the library of this university. He read a lot and learned quickly, although he never attended college. Instead, he independently pursued higher education. “I am proof that any obstacle can be overcome if you are determined to get an education and work hard. ” [3]
Total donation of J.B. Fukua Duke University was about 40 million dollars. by the time of his death on April 5, 2006. [3]
