What is Drew League?

Here’s how the amateur league from Compton became world famous.

We talk about how the amateur league from Compton gained worldwide fame.

A LEAGUE TO PLAY WITH NBA STARS

The NBA is going on hiatus this summer. All players need game practice, and we need alternative basketball content. Helps solve these 2 problems at once “Drew League” – a basketball league that originated in Compton. This league is made up of players who return home to the US for the summer from foreign championships, promising students, celebrities, streetball players and NBA stars.

What is it?

“Drew League” was created by Alvin Wheels on the basis of Charles Drew High School (Compton California) at 1973rd year. Initially, it consisted of 6 teams and was designed to help local youth socialize, make new friends and get a college scholarship. The project was positioned as a local league “from their own for their own”.

Alvin Wheels and the basketball court of Charles Drew Middle School, which hosted games from 1973 to 2005.

Why is Drew League so popular?

Year after year, the popularity of the league among the players gradually grew, but the most notable jump happened recently. In 2011, the NBA announced a lockout, and then many NBA stars wanted to participate in this tournament. Highlights from the matches quickly spread among basketball fans, which helped to speed up the acquaintance of potential fans with the tournament format.

The presence of NBA players on the courts attracted media attention and sponsors followed suit. Today, the Drew League is partnering with Nike to co-brand the competition.

Since then, the attendance of league matches has increased to 800 people per game. This tournament has become an outlet for professionals who want to prove themselves even in the off-season. They play here just for respect, which once again confirms the coolness of the league.

    The most famous “unknown” players?

In the early years, the main players in the league were local players. For example, Dane Suttle, who was born in Los Angeles, studied at Pepperdine University, played in the Drew League, and then managed to break into the Kansas City Kings.

Casper Ware Sr., Suttle’s Drew League teammate, is a three-time champion as a player and twice as a coach. Ware became the MVP of the league, and 30 years later this title was submitted to his son. Robin “Syk Wit It” Kennedy Played Drew League Early 90s, and later revealed himself as an AND1 Mixtape Tour streetball star.

    Robin “Syk Wit It” Kennedy

John Williams, James Grey, Moe Spillers and Kenny Brunner played at least one season in the Drew League before becoming famous players.

Franklin “Nitti” Session is one of the league’s most entertaining players to date, a three-time Drew League MVP and current player for Qatari side Al-Gharafa.

    Frank “Nitti” Session

Which NBA players played in the Drew League?

Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Michael Beasley, Byron Scott, Paul George, JR Smith Jr., Baron Davis, Metta World Peace, Paul Pierce, James Harden, John Wall all played in the Drew League . In fact, the list is much longer, but you will find out for yourself when you dive into the study of the league.

What does Nike have to do with it?

Since 2013, Nike has been the league’s official technical sponsor, improving the visuals and attracting more fans. Style has become an important direction in the development of the league, so the decision was made to start a blog. Now the teams have more opportunities for self-expression and creativity when choosing a name and logos.

Nike also provides the Drew League with sports equipment, equipment and other necessary equipment. They also regularly release various products with the league’s identity, which anyone can buy. For example, this asymmetric, multi-faceted and rich coloring of PG 5, dedicated to the Drew League.

You can buy this and other models of sneakers in the largest Streetball basketball store.

Taking care of your community is one of the important foundations of league

The league has its own charitable foundation – The Drew League Foundation. It was founded as a safe and positive alternative for young people from disadvantaged areas and risk groups. The Foundation’s program enables young people to escape the influence of street gangs through mentoring, training workshops and sporting events. By achieving these goals, the Drew League Foundation improves overall social well-being.

Iconic NBA All-Star Performances in the Drew League

Of course, there have been countless legendary moments with NBA All-Stars over the years of the competition. We have put together a small top that will convey the whole atmosphere of this league.

A solid double-double on LaMelo Ball’s debut in the Drew League, well before his first game for the Hornets.

Current NBA MVP James Harden plays against current Drew League MVP Frank Nitti. Also on the floor: PJ Tucker, Montrez Harrell, Mike James and others.

Isaiah Thomas scores 37 points, and a plump Baron Davis cheers him on with all his might.

Frank “Nitty” Session and local fans are testing the brash Trae Young.

One of the most iconic duels in Drew League history, following the news of Kobe’s induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame. 45 points from Kobe Bryant to 44 from James Harden. Episodes: DeMar DeRozan, Derrick Williams, Ed Davis et al.

DeMar DeRozan and Jordan Clarkson join forces and play for Nick Young’s “Most Hated Players” against local snipers.

Nate Robinson plays against The Game.

Jerseys, T-shirts, sweatshirts and socks with the logos of your favorite NBA teams can be purchased at the Streetball store.

The vast metropolis of Los Angeles is home to an ethnically diverse population, a Mediterranean climate and, of course, Hollywood. It is also considered the second largest city in the United States in terms of population, now reaching 4 million.

However, Los Angeles does not want to give way to New York so easily. As the largest city in the richest region on Earth, California, Los Angeles is a true superstar. It ranks 6th in the Global Cities ranking. It has great job opportunities, many world-class universities, and a huge culinary, arts, and cultural scene. Every year, the City of Angels gives hope and wings to thousands of newcomers who come here to follow their dreams.

The average cost of renting an apartment in Los Angeles is about $2100. Housing prices differ in different parts of the city: over $3,050 in Santa Monica and as little as $1,100 in South Los Angeles. Here you can find chic beach houses in Malibu, and inexpensive loft space in Compton. Los Angeles County has accommodations to suit all tastes and budgets.

If you dream of living in California, then you are in the right place. On the Nestpick website you will find the best selection of apartments for rent in Los Angeles.

Furnished and serviced apartments in Los Angeles

For expats and professionals on short-term business trips, Los Angeles is ideal for aparthotels and serviced apartments. Los Angeles apartment hotels are usually well-appointed and provide room service, housekeeping and wifi to make your stay in the City of Angels as comfortable as possible.

    Apartments in Los Angeles areas

Like other big cities, Los Angeles is divided into blocks and districts, each of which has its own special flavor. From Canoga Park to Cypress, the City of Angels is full of famous landmarks and hidden treasures.
While the city offers a variety of housing options, apartment hunting can often be quite frustrating if you’re unfamiliar with Los Angeles’ geography and rental prices. Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve put together a short list of the best areas in the city for expats and newcomers.
Once you get to know Los Angeles, Nestpick’s filter system will allow you to narrow down your search for furnished apartments in the areas you like best.

Most popular areas to live in Los Angeles

    Apartments in Downtown Los Angeles

Downtown Los Angeles boasts an incredible skyline that includes the US Bank Tower, winding highways and huge convention centers, making this area the city’s economic hub.
However, downtown is more than a corporate monolith. With concert halls designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, elegant public plazas, historic train stations, museums and the Los Angeles Public Library, the area is also a central point of California civilization. Downtown is suitable for those who want to live in a big city and enjoy a wide variety of restaurants, culture and sports activities.
The influx of new residents into popular neighborhoods such as Skid Row has led to a kind of reactivation of Downtown, where new businesses are now constantly opening. Unlike the rest of Los Angeles, which is often only accessible by transport, everything here is extremely compact and comfortable.
Apartments in downtown Los Angeles are mostly high-rise condominiums and lofts. The cost of rent in this area is one of the highest in the city. A typical 1-room apartment can cost between $2200 and $2600.
With Nestpick, you have the largest selection of Los Angeles rentals at your fingertips. Start exploring our offers right now.
