A hilly promontory covered with lush greenery, surrounded by the massive walls of the medieval castle of Monterreal, from the height of which one can enjoy a magnificent view of the city and the sea, sandy beaches in the east and rocky cliffs in the west, coves, a port that never sleeps, moorings for sports yachts and fishing boats , a historical caravel, a chain of rocky islets… This is how Bayona looks like – a town stretching along the shore of the bay of the same name off the southernmost coast of Galicia, just 30 kilometers from the border with Portugal.
Apple of Discord
The history of Baiona dates back to 140 BC, when a small settlement called Stusiana was founded in a secluded harbor. Subsequently, it was changed to Aboria, Balsaya, Erisana and, in the end, settled on the current name.
Throughout its history, the city passed from hand to hand of different conquerors.
First it was the Romans. In 60 BC. e. Julius Caesar himself arrived here to conquer the freedom-loving settlement. The words of the proud ancestors of the modern inhabitants of Bayona have come down to us: “Our fathers did not leave us gold and silver to buy freedom, but left iron to protect it!”.
Then the Visigoths came here, led by King Rekaredo, then the Arabs, after them the Spaniards regained this part of the coast. Nevertheless, two centuries later, Muslims settled here again, who were finally expelled from this territory in the XII century. But the series of conquests does not end there. In the 14th century, the city came under the rule of the British Duke of Lancaster. In 1533 Bayona was attacked by 56 ships belonging to the French fleet, and in 1585 the English pirate Francis Drake tried to capture the fort. The 17th and 18th centuries were a period of constant attacks on Baiona, which was the main port in southern Galicia and northern Portugal and the most difficult place for battles.
Majestic Citadel
Bayona was a tidbit for “gentlemen of fortune” – pirates of all stripes (English, Algerian, Portuguese, Dutch) – who constantly raided her in the XIV-XV centuries. Queen Isabella of Castile put an end to this, ordering the construction of a defensive fortress and resettling all the inhabitants of the city there. This is how the Monterreal fortress (Castillo Monterreal) appeared, which includes several watchtowers, one of which is equipped with a drawbridge.
Citadel attracts a large number of tourists. For a nominal fee of 2 euros, everyone can enter inside the fortress walls, inspect the prison tower, admire the Atlantic Ocean and the huge granite statue of Virgen De La Roca, standing on the opposite side of the bay. The Mother of God, holding a ship in her hands, brings consolation to all those sailing in the endless waters of the ocean.
Also of interest is the parador preserved in the inner space. In Spain, a parador is an ancient castle or monastery converted into a hotel and located in historic buildings.
Santa Maria, Nina, Pinta
The special pride of the inhabitants of a small town is that it was their ancestors who were the first in the Old World to learn about the discoveries of Christopher Columbus.
On March 1, 1493, one of the three caravels (Santa Maria, Nina, Pinta) moored here, on which the brave Christopher Columbus set off on his risky voyage. Only the Pint returned. On the way back from the New World, a terrible storm threw her into the port of Bayona. The ship was commanded by Martin Alonso Pinson, at the helm was Christopher Garcia Sarmiento, a native of Bayona.
This significant date is imprinted in many places in the form of commemorative tablets, sculptures, monuments and names. Therefore, willy-nilly, all tourists easily remember these “magic” and important numbers for every local resident. In addition, there is an exact copy of the legendary ship that crossed the Atlantic twice in the harbor. Its size is amazing, tiny for conquering huge ocean waves. Tourists have the opportunity to be convinced of this: to board the caravel, go down into the hold and see with their own eyes the conditions under which the brave navigator and his team made a dangerous adventurous journey. Evergreen Paradise
Today Baiona is a popular tourist town with a medieval historic center, living mainly on fishing and tourism. The beauty of nature and the mild climate make this place attractive to many. At the peak of the tourist season, the population of twelve thousand increases several times – up to 45 thousand.
There are many hotels, small and large, expensive and not very expensive. An endless series of bars and small restaurants where you can always enjoy the freshest delicacies for a small fee.
Main dishes – rice with lobster (bogavante), sea bass in salt (lubina en sal), various seafood from the night catch, accompanied by the famous Galician wines – Albariño. In addition, in these places, as elsewhere in northern Spain, they cook excellent meat with blood and fried small green peppers – los padrones.
For beach lovers, there are four kilometers of beaches covered with the finest white sand. The most famous of them is Praia America.
The port offers a wide range of water sports. The city hosts yacht competitions that participate in round-the-world voyages.
Since 1974, March 1st is an official holiday in Bayonne called “La Arribada” in honor of the arrival of the “Pinta”. Various events are held every year on the first weekend of March. Residents organize a theatrical landing of sailors from the Pinta, arrange dances and festivities in the traditional style.
In 1993, the Old Town of Baiona was declared a historical and cultural heritage.
