Smoky mountains in swellings, landslides, quarries and rocks… And the factory below is the same: a whole city of domes, towers and cylindrical roofs, and the same Cozy Colony on the mountainside, above the factory, with stunted acacias, – Fyodor Gladkov, a classic of socialist realism, wrote about these places almost a hundred years ago.
I look at the acacias of the Cozy Colony, and they are not stunted at all – green, with yellow marks. Here, where I am now, Gleb Chumalov, the hero of Fyodor Gladkov’s novel “Cement”, returned from the Civil War to restore his native plant. “If you enter a gap in the concrete wall separating the factory area from the city suburbs (there was a gate, and now there is a gap), in the second barracks there is Gleb’s apartment,” the novel says.
Fyodor Gladkov at that time was also here, in Novorossiysk, and lived almost nearby – in the premises of a school for children of cement plant workers, built at the very beginning of the 20th century.
Since 1979, the world’s only Museum of the Cement Industry has been operating in this historic house, based on the legendary Novoroscement plant. In the attic part of the museum there is now a memorial apartment of the famous Russian Soviet writer Fyodor Vasilyevich Gladkov.
I go to the museum and meet two wonderful women – its director Valentina Viktorovna Baranova and senior researcher Antonina Vladimirovna Meldzer.
Valentina Baranova has been working in this unique museum for 35 years and has been in charge of it for 18 years. Antonina Meldzer kindly agrees to give me a tour.
We go up to the attic floor: Fyodor Gladkov’s memorial apartment consists of two parts – the exposition part and the dwelling itself, curtained with curtains embroidered with purple flowers.
The beginning of the exposition is a large family photograph of the Gladkov family, an Old Believer peasant family. The baby in the arms of the mother – a woman with a high brow – is a three-year-old Fedyushka.
In Grigory Roshal’s film Volnitsa, filmed in 1955 based on the writer’s autobiographical prose, Misha Merkulov played Fedya as a child, and Rufina Nifontova, People’s Artist of the USSR, played his mother.
Antonina Meldzer, senior researcher at the Museum of the Cement Industry, tells:
– Fedor Vasilievich Gladkov was born on June 21, 1883 in the village of Chernavka, Saratov province (now it is the Penza region). The family lived in poverty, but reading books was greatly encouraged in it. A boy from a peasant Old Believer family, in the words of Mikhail Isakovsky, “had one share – a barren field, a barren field and lean rye.” But at that time, for the sake of such peasant children, who eagerly learned to read from old church books, the advanced Russian intelligentsia was already going to the people. The young populist Elena Parmenionova, who taught literature at the Chernavka school, abruptly changed the fate of Fyodor Gladkov. She instilled in him a love for the artistic word, introduced him to the great Russian writers.
The books he read were combined in the rich imagination of the boy with the dreams of his fellow villagers about a just life. And although many difficulties awaited young Gladkov, he left childhood with the most valuable baggage – a correctly formed worldview.
As a teenager, Fedya worked hard and hard, even washing lithographic type in a printing house, breathing gasoline fumes. He kept a diary, from which it later became known how cruelly the owners treated not only adult employees, but also children.
Fedya Gladkov ran away from especially ferocious masters, and then completely left for Yekaterinodar (present-day Krasnodar), where his father worked at that time. There, without the knowledge of his parents, the teenager entered a six-year school, which he successfully graduated from.
At the graduation party, he brought his beloved teacher Fatyanov his first story “Toward the Light”. After reading this work, Fatyanov advised Fedor to contact the editor of the Kuban Vedomosti newspaper, Luka Melnikov, who published the story in 1901.
Gladkov called Melnikov the first literary mentor, and Gorky the creative inspirer.
“I began my literary work under the strong influence of Maxim Gorky,” he wrote. “In 1900, I first heard Gorky’s extraordinary voice, heard it and followed him, shocked for many years.”
After graduating from college, Fyodor taught in Transbaikalia, where he created a series of short stories “At Hard Labor”. Published in one of the Chita newspapers, they received high praise from critics.
Then Gladkov graduated from the Pedagogical University in Tiflis as an external student – he received a diploma as a teacher of literature.
In 1906, Fyodor Gladkov became a member of the RSDLP – consciously embarked on the path of revolutionary struggle against the existing system. For participation in the First Russian Revolution, he was arrested, convicted and exiled to Siberia. Fedor ended up in the Irkutsk Central, and later his story “The Old Secret” was published – about the cruel treatment of prisoners in this old royal prison, where Chernyshevsky and Korolenko visited.
At the end of his exile, Fyodor Gladkov returned to the Krasnodar Territory again. This time – to Novorossiysk. For the first time in our city, Fedor Vasilyevich appeared in January 1910. Here he found personal happiness – he married Tatyana Nilovna Zaitseva, who, along with her sisters, taught at a school for children of cement plant workers. In 1911, the first-born, Vasily, was born in the Gladkov family.
In 1914, the city department of education sent Fyodor Gladkov to the village of Pavlovskaya, where he headed the higher primary school.
In the summer of 1918, the Gladkov family, in which one more son, Boris, was growing up, returned to Novorossiysk. In August, the heroic Taman army, the Iron Stream, passed through the city, and then Denikin’s troops captured it. They outlawed the Bolshevik Gladkov, and Fedor settled at a weather station in the mountains. His wife and children hid in a working settlement of cement workers.
Gladkov created an underground group of young students, which established contact with the red-green partisans, passing them valuable information, food, clothing, and medicines.
About the young communards of the Kuban, who fought for Soviet power, Fyodor Gladkov wrote a poignant story “Green”.
On March 27, 1920, the Red Army liberated Novorossiysk from the White Guards. The writer Gladkov was appointed head of the sub-department of public education, then the editor-in-chief of the Krasnoye Chernomorye newspaper. He skillfully combined creative activity with revolutionary agitation among cement workers, where he was a member of a party cell.
The struggle of the communists for the restoration of the Novorossiysk cement plant, in which the writer took a direct part, is the most striking of the events he experienced in our city. “I lived and breathed this struggle as an ordinary party and worker. And in this struggle, for the first time, a new system of images flared up in me, I was completely captured by the poem “Cement,” he later recalled.
In the autumn of 1921, on the initiative of Maxim Gorky, Fyodor Gladkov was recalled to Moscow. There he began to create his work “Cement” – “in hot pursuit” of work in Novorossiysk.
As the author himself noted, this novel, completed in 1924, “… was written at night in an unpleasant, cold, lonely basement room on Smolensky Boulevard.”
“Cement”, and then the novel about the builders of the Dneproges “Energy” (1932-1938), the second part of which Gladkov created in Novorossiysk, put Fyodor Vasilyevich in the first row of Soviet writers.
During the Great Patriotic War, Gladkov worked as a correspondent for the newspapers Pravda and Izvestia in the Urals and as a war correspondent for Izvestia. At the same time, two of his stories were published – “Mother” and “Oath”.
Both sons of the writer fought on the fronts, Boris served in the Black Sea Fleet and in September 1943 took part in the liberation of Novorossiysk from Nazi invaders.
From 1945 to 1948, Fedor Vasilyevich was the rector of the Literary Institute. A.M. Gorky. In the last five years of his life, he worked on a series of autobiographical novels: The Tale of Childhood, Freemen, and Hard Times.
A classic of socialist realism, winner of two Stalin Prizes, Fyodor Vasilyevich Gladkov died on December 20, 1958. He was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. The monument on his grave was created by the Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich, a friend of the Gladkov family.
Novel-“foundation”
Behind the museum glass is a typewriter “Continental” – it was on it that Fyodor Gladkov typed his most famous novel “Cement”. The plot outline of the work was a story about the restoration of the Novorossiysk cement plant. The writer recreated the picture of everyday work at the beginning of 1920s with their genuine labor enthusiasm, subbotniks and brass bands.
In 1921, the protagonist of the novel “Cement” Gleb Chumalov arrived from the fields of the Civil War to restore his native cement plant. His arrival coincided with the end of the War Communism period. The replacement of the surplus appropriation tax with a tax in kind (March 15, 1921), the appeal of the Central Committee of the RCP (b) to all party organizations to purge the party and the decision of the Council of People’s Commissars on the new economic policy, which had a great influence on the deployment and strengthening of peaceful construction, determine the key moments of the plot action in the novel and its composition strictly corresponding to the sequence of historical events.
Gleb has the Order of the Red Banner of War on his chest, and joy in his soul: “Good! Again – machines and labor. The new labor is free labor, won by struggle—by fire and blood.” But the reality turned out to be harsh: in the three years of his absence, the enterprise changed dramatically – “the White Guards turned the factory building into stables, barracks for prisoners of war.” The plant was destroyed, only the engine room was preserved, “the extinct world of the plant brings savagery to the workers, who, under the influence of forced idleness, are disorganized.”
And here Fyodor Gladkov expressed the most important thought: labor is the holy of holies, to take it away from the worker means to deprive life of any meaning. It is no coincidence that after the release of the novel Cement Maxim Gorky wrote to Gladkov: “This is a very significant, very good book.
In it, for the first time since the revolution, the most significant topic of our time—labor—is firmly grasped and brightly illuminated.
Before you, no one has touched this topic with such force. And so smart.”
Fyodor Gladkov revealed the theme of labor firsthand. “I have seen from my own experience how the consciousness of inaction stops breathing,” he said. – I can not breathe. Lie down and die … The terrible word “unemployment” is a catastrophe, a tragedy, an abyss that has opened up under your feet. The “stagnant lack of work” had a heavy impact on the workers of the cement plant. “Scattered in their home holes, forgetting the factory – roar, fumes, dust and the smell of cars, – covered with other dust – the dust of mountain winds, – the people of the factory, guild artel labor, with bags on their backs, crawled into the mountains in gangs, – wrote Fyodor Gladkov . “They went to farms and villages along the countryside and steppe roads and paths, as in the era of natural exchange, driven by hunger and primitive greed. Factory workers, who were awakened in the mornings not by the crow of roosters, but by the metallic roar of a horn, have learned over the years the sweetness of pig and goat nests and the joy of warm chicken nests.
And the people of the machines learned to scream along with the pigs and chickens … The electricity at the factory and in the barracks went out, the horns choked with dust – silence and effortlessness clucked, grunted with a village idyll. And the zealous husband and the hoarding woman sullenly locked themselves in the household crates.
Observing the life of former workers, Gleb understood that only the start-up of the plant could inspire them.
“We are cement producers,” he said, speaking to the factory workers. “And cement is a strong bond. Cement is us, comrades, the working class. You need to know and feel this well … Enough to sit back and engage in goat interests. It is time to move on to our direct business—the production of cement for the construction of socialism.
Appointed secretary of the party cell, Gleb Chumalov, in his struggle for the restoration of the plant, was organically merged with the masses. The workers saw in him a reliable comrade in the struggle, with whom they could turn “thirty-three mountains.

— The plant must go, Gleb. If there are machines, friend, they cannot stop working: they, brother, work even when they are standing … Whether you feel it or not, you must do everything to light the first match. And you can always rely on me, – his close friend, the factory mechanic Brynza, told Chumalov.
Gleb Chumalov, a faithful Leninist who deeply understands the politics of the party and draws strength from it for the struggle, “every day ran around the trade unions, enterprises and on the spot entered into all the details of production and the lives of workers … He promptly broke into institutions, into economic agencies , in food agencies, fluffed up papers, ordered, demanded, lit, caused storms of enthusiasm. This is how he entered the souls of the workers!
“The party and the army ordered me: go to your factory and fight for socialism, just like at the front,” Chumalov said. Peaceful construction in the USSR after the end of the Civil War was far from peaceful.
Workers often had to interrupt restoration work in order to repel an attack by counter-revolutionary bandits. “From battle to work, from work to attacks” was also the restoration of the cement plant in Novorossiysk. White-green gangs, gathered from the Cossack villages, fired at the workers and destroyed the bremsberg built by them – a structure for lowering goods down an inclined plane.
But not only obvious ones – disguised enemies of Soviet power, as one of the heroes of the novel says, “walk around the city in masks of friends of the revolution.” “Sleek and shaved in English” – with such epithets Gladkov characterizes the “pests” to the reader. “Under the guise of meeting and paperwork, they confuse simple questions to a dizzying mess.” The “pests” settled in the economic council, where Schramm is in charge, secretly preparing the plant for concession from the workers.
In addition to Schramm, there is another hidden enemy in “Cement” – the chairman of the executive committee Badin.
He is portrayed by Gladkov as more cunning, deftly disguising his hostile face behind revolutionary phrases. Badin makes rather “incendiary” speeches, teaches morality to the people around him, speaks of himself as a person “burning” in the name of the revolution. However, the true nature of this two-faced Janus is revealed in his attitude towards the restoration of the plant. Badin, like Schramm, does not believe in the creative powers of the working class.
For Gleb Chumalov, they are both enemies, but Gleb attracted the pre-revolutionary technical intellectual engineer Kleist to his side. During the years of the Civil War, Kleist betrayed the Bolshevik Chumalov to the White Guards, but Gleb forgave him – not so much out of pity, but out of the realization that the plant needed this professional. In the scene where Chumalov opens the window in Kleist’s room and knocks down the cobwebs with his helmet, dispersing the spiders, Gladkov, as it were, warns in advance that Gleb will emerge victorious in the fight for Kleist.
Feeling the confidence of the secretary of the party cell, engineer Kleist proved to be a practical specialist.
Gleb found it most difficult to communicate with his wife Dasha, because during the three years of separation she had changed a lot: she had independent views that were not always clear to him. Dreaming about the reorganization of the family on modern principles, about being not only a wife for her husband, but also a comrade, Dasha embarked on the path of denying any duties in relation to the family. The death of Nyurka’s only daughter, whom she gave to an orphanage, broke the last thread between the spouses.
The main event in the life of Gleb Chumalov was the launch of the revived enterprise, dedicated to the 4th anniversary of the Great October Revolution: “Plant! How much strength is required, how much struggle there was! Here it is, the plant – a hero and a handsome man! He was recently a dead dump, ruins, a rat’s nest. And now – diesel engines rumble, wires saturated with electricity ring, bremsbergs play rolls and trolleys rattle .
.. Banners and banners swayed. Songs and explosions of voices shook the air, and the boardwalk trembled under Gleb’s feet…”
“Cement” by Fyodor Gladkov is a classic work of socialist realism, one of the first samples of the Soviet “industrial novel”.
After its publication in 1925, the French communist newspaper L’Humanité wrote: “If Serafimovich’s Iron Stream is an image of war and armed revolution, then Gladkov’s Cement is an image of an economic revolution in the mind of a person. The red detachment of Kozhukh won just as the red factories of Gleb are now winning. The newspaper not only highly appreciated the novel, but also published its translations into many European languages.
“In fiction, the proletarian detachment produced several remarkable works, at the head of which we have to place Gladkov’s massive and energetic novel Cement. It is possible to build further on this cement foundation,” Anatoly Lunacharsky noted in 1926 in the article “Achievements of Our Art”.
“Fyodor Gladkov’s cement is people united by one goal and connected by a single idea. <...> An invincible force capable of solving any problem. A phenomenon that broke out in the Soviet Union after both terrible wars of the 20th century. A phenomenon that simultaneously causes anger and envy of the rest of the world. Something long forgotten, almost impossible today, but the only thing that can save us is what cement is,” writes our contemporary, well-known Russian blogger Rodion Tvorogin.
One of the stands in the exposition of Fyodor Gladkov’s memorial apartment is filled with many books with the name “Cement” written in English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Polish, Czech … The Soviet “production novel” was published in 52 countries of the world and is still still popular with foreign readers. In Russia, “Cement” has ceased to be published since the late 1980s. And already in the early 1990s, “English-shaven” scars and duplicitous badins began to massively destroy Soviet factories and factories, turning them into “ruins and rat nests.
” Thousands of workers in the USSR experienced “stagnant worklessness” and learned the terrible word “unemployment”.
Since then, Fyodor Gladkov’s novel “Cement” has also been a guide for the modern Russian proletariat.
Antonina Meldzer, a senior researcher at the Museum of the Cement Industry, tells:
— In 1959, a folk drama theater was established in Novorossiysk. Ivan Lysenko, a rotary kiln operator at the Proletariy cement plant, and Vasily Veryovkin, a worker cleaning dust chambers at the Oktyabr cement plant, performed wonderfully in it. Ivan Lysenko was then invited to the two-part feature film “Cement”, which at 191973 was filmed by Lenfilm directors Alexander Blank and Sergey Linkov. Filming took place in Novorossiysk, many of our cement workers were involved in extras. The role of Gleb Chumalov in the film was played by Roman Gromadsky, Badin – Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, engineer Kleist – Bruno Freindlich. The image of Gleb Chumalov’s wife, Dasha, was wonderfully revealed by the Soviet and Russian actress, laureate of the USSR State Prize, People’s Artist of the RSFSR, our countrywoman Lyudmila Zaitseva.
The section of the exposition “Cement” on the screen and on the stage” shows the creative works of the film studios “Lenfilm”, “Defa” (former GDR) and the leading theaters of the country. Among the exhibited props from the Lenfilm film “Cement” are a box with Roman Gromadsky’s make-up, a large Nyurka doll – the daughters of Gleb and Dasha, a Red Army uniform with a blue star.
In the memorial apartment, where we later entered with Antonina Vladimirovna, exposition artists Andrey and Tamara Somov recreated the atmosphere of the time when the Gladkov family lived there. Fyodor Vasilyevich’s personal library, a bookcase and a shelf for music made by him – books and music occupied a huge place in the writer’s life, his office chair, his wife’s Singer sewing machine, and his sons’ children’s corner. The light of a large kerosene lamp above the table fell softly, and an old clock from the Pavel Bure company greeted us with a melodious chime. Once upon a time, this wall clock showed the time to a young sailor of the Black Sea Fleet, Vsevolod Vishnevsky, who brought his first works to the writer Gladkov.
“If we keep quiet now, we will hear the noise of the Proletariy cement plant,” Antonina Vladimirovna told me. – This indicates that Fedor Vasilyevich Gladkov lived on the working side and was never cut off from the working class.
…I’m leaving the museum and going out into the street. And the reinforced concrete buildings of the plant, and the workers’ houses of the Cozy Colony, and the ribs of the mountains in copper scale, in the words of Fyodor Gladkov, “melt in the sun.” A young worker hurries to the factory in a new overall and a bright helmet. He refuses to give me an interview – he says that he is late for his shift. And from the gates of the “Proletary” a huge, loaded car leaves, occupying almost the entire road. I step back into the roadside grass and see a bright cloud swirling over the car like a memory – cement.

Walking at night: research and observations of specialists
As numerous studies in the field of sleep disorders show, wakefulness of young children at night is indeed one of the most common problems under the age of 3 years. According to scientists, about 20% of children from 1 to 2 years old wake up and stay awake at night 5 or more times a week, among three-year-olds 26% wake up at least 3 times a week.
According to many children’s specialists (pediatricians, neurologists, osteopaths, psychologists), this is a very common reason for parents to contact us. As a rule, if the doctor has not found any neurological disorders in the child and the baby is generally healthy, the diagnosis of insomnia is made and drug treatment is offered, sometimes massage and “herbs”. But the doctors themselves admit that this does not always lead to a solution to the problem.
Is it normal for a child to wake up at night?
Night feedings
Nighttime awakenings can be not only normal, but even necessary.
For example, awakening for night feedings in infants. A baby under 3 months old should be fed on demand at any time of the day, including at night.
Up to 8-10 months, and sometimes longer, 1-2 night feedings can be maintained. By the age of one, a child can already do without feeding at all at night – but many children sleep longer and calmer if there is feeding in the morning. Other causes
Other common causes are baby’s physical discomfort due to a full diaper, acute teething phase (if it has been going on for several weeks, probably not the teeth), illness, hunger, heat or cold, etc. .d.
Night awakenings (not every day) can normally persist for up to 3-5 years. They may be associated with physical discomfort, fears or nightmares.
What does “the child walks at night” mean?
Unlike normal, natural nocturnal awakenings, it is very difficult for a child to go to sleep again if he “looks up” in the middle of the night.
Children “walk” at night in different ways at different ages. So, at 1–3 months, a baby can completely confuse day and night, at 6 months – a year for 2–3 hours to practice new skills (sit down, crawl, stand up), at 1.5 years old start playing.

The first group includes factors related to the organization and conditions of sleep, the second – psychological problems, which we will discuss in the second part of the article.
1. Mistakes in the organization of sleep:
- The most common cause is too much sleep during the day. If the daily rate of sleep is not balanced and the child sleeps too much during the day, then when he wakes up at night, the baby feels already enough sleep, it is more difficult for him to fall asleep again.
To prevent long bedtimes, check the table of age norms of sleep. - Lighting interferes — parents turn on the light, take the awakened child into a lighted room, leave the night light on, displays of household appliances are on, etc. The child’s brain reacts to light as a signal to wake up.
- Late laying . The child’s nervous system is still immature, and fatigue from being awake for too long quickly leads to overexcitation and poor sleep quality.
- Lack of ability to fall asleep independently . If a child is constantly helped to fall asleep in some particular way (sickness, or given a breast or a bottle to fall asleep, or a mother lies nearby), the child gets used to falling asleep only in such conditions and every time he wakes up (for example, when changing sleep cycles), he needs to again and recreate these conditions. For example, a child fell asleep in his mother’s arms and suddenly woke up alone in the crib – he is frightened or indignant, crying and calling his mother. He wants to sleep very much, but he can’t just go back to sleep right away, and then quickly becomes overexcited. He can fall asleep only when the usual conditions for falling asleep are restored and he calms down.
- No regimen due to age, inconsistent bedtime. The biological clock of the child is tuned to the circadian rhythm, which normally commands “rise!” in the morning and “sleep!” in the evening at the same time. When a child’s routine is in conflict with the circadian rhythm (and, accordingly, with the body’s production of “sleep” and “wake” hormones), it is more difficult for a child to fall asleep. He is overtired, and at night he may become awake.
- Overexcitation when lying down : it happens that parents involuntarily entertain the child, trying to put him to bed in all ways (they shake him, then sing, then emotionally tell a fairy tale). Often parents give the baby to play and let him run out of the bedroom, thinking that he just does not want to sleep yet. After one year, babies tend to hide signs of fatigue and often don’t look sleepy at all in the evenings. But since the child is still tired during the day, the body helps him cope with fatigue and drowsiness by producing the “stress hormone” cortisol.
