90,000 American teenagers forced to read 35 books about racism and anti-Semitism instead of punishment – Bird In Flight

In the fall of 2016, several teenagers covered an old school in Ashburn, Virginia with offensive graffiti, where black children studied during the era of segregation. The guilty were given an unusual sentence – reading. Two and a half years later, journalist Emma Jane Kirby of the BBC found out if the punishment had worked.

Prosecutor Alejandra Rueda immediately realized that the drawings were made by children. “The graffiti was racist, with swastikas and white power and brown power,” she recalls. – But there were also drawings with dinosaurs, female breasts and penises. And I thought, ‘This doesn’t look like KKK bullying, this looks more like the work of stupid teenagers.'” The culprits really turned out to be five young men aged 16 and 17, who were arrested for illegal entry and destruction of private property.

They didn’t have a criminal record so they didn’t go to jail. In another situation, they would be given several hours of probationary work, forced to write a letter of apology, and a service officer would visit them once a month. But Rwanda instructed violators to complete 12 tasks and write an essay in three and a half thousand characters about racial hatred. “Society has exploded – this is understandable. But some of these children didn’t even know what the swastika meant. They could either be punished or rehabilitated. Then I remembered what taught me when I was their age, what opened my eyes to other cultures and religions: it was reading,” says Rwanda. Therefore, she also compiled a list of 35 books for teenagers, which included Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Leon Uris’ Exodus, Solomon Northup’s Twelve Years a Slave, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, and other works. All five young men completed written assignments, visited the Holocaust Museum in Washington and the National Museum of American History. One of the teenagers agreed to tell how he was affected by the punishment of reading, and showed his essay:

“I had no idea how dark some parts of human history were. I never really thought about what was going on because part of me really didn’t want to know about these horrors. I thought the swastika was just a symbol and nothing more. Now I don’t think so. I was wrong: it meant a lot to those they affected. Swastikas are a reminder of the oppression and superiority of the white race over other races, which is not the case. People should not feel less important than they are, and no one should make them feel that way. I feel particularly uncomfortable after writing an essay about how I hurt someone. Everyone should be treated equally, regardless of race, religion or sexual orientation. I will do my best to never be so ignorant again.”

When Rwanda read the teenager’s essay, she started crying. “It worked, but jail time doesn’t work. Yes, some children need to be incarcerated because they are a danger to society or to themselves, but more often than not, prison can be very traumatic. This is not the goal of justice when it comes to children,” the prosecutor said.
