College of Alameda
Our Mission
College of Alameda’s mission is to serve the educational needs of its diverse community by providing comprehensive and flexible programs and resources that enable students to achieve their goals.
Our Vision
College of Alameda’s vision is to be a diverse, supportive, empowering learning community for knowledge seekers. We strive to provide a creative, ethical and inclusive environment in which students develop their abilities as thinkers, workers and global citizens.
At the College of Alameda, ABC means we integrate our core values into everything we do to help students achieve their dreams. How are these critical indicators of success in serving our educational community being emphasized?
Academic excellence means that we validate our work based on our student’s performance against our institutional learning outcomes. We strive to achieve these goals by adhering to an innovative and integrated curriculum based on partnerships within our organization between student support services and academic learning, seeking to create opportunities for applied learning (e.g. service learning, civic engagement and interdisciplinary learning). learning communities), all in the context of a psychologically and intellectually safe environment that encourages risk taking and celebrates our successes.
Budgetary competence means that all of our services must be creatively offered within the real limits of our budget. We are all part of this process of responsible management of the resources entrusted to us by the community we serve. We try not to bring ideas up for discussion without first asking how it fits within our resources and trying to find creative ways to supplement our budget. In doing so, we also strive to find creative ways to do what we want within the context of our vision of success, not just a narrowed vision of what we have always done. We also strive to provide our students with a flexible and creative schedule, allowing us to offer courses that are productive, creative and experiential. We are looking for holistic offerings that complement our existing programs, our sister colleges in the Peralta Community College District, and that leverage the unique strengths of College of Alameda .
Community involvement means that we strive to embody the spirit of collegiality by actively working on a student-centered philosophy that embodies a community of academic practitioners committed to serving our students with professional and collegial competence. We strive to hold each other accountable for meeting the clear standards of success and excellence defined by our institutional learning outcomes, using an assessment and evaluation process that leads to improved college programs and services. In doing so, we use tried and tested models of academic excellence that work! COA Learning Communities (Adelante, APASS, Amandla, Community Leadership and Public Service) are all examples of successful programs that demonstrate our commitment to students. We focus on a holistic collaborative approach to learning; one in which learning takes place both in and out of the classroom. We recognize that our frontline employees are as important as our administration and our faculty cannot function without them. We actively promote and support students as equal partners in co-management through the College of Alameda Students’ Association (ASCOA) and our Campus Life Council. This one-team approach of students, staff, and faculty aims to play down differences among stakeholders; we are all students, each working towards a common goal: student success!
