We are accepting applications! Please e-mail Maria at [email protected] to schedule an appointment for a tour!

Since 1991 West Hollywood Children’s Academy has been providing extraordinary early childhood educational program for children 2-6 years old.  Our center is a place where children, teachers, parents, and community members come together as a family to create a trusted, gentle, nurturing, and safe environment where children can play, learn, laugh, discover, and grow.

Our Preschool and PreK-TK programs nurture the whole child in all areas of development: social, emotional, cognitive, intellectual, and physical.

  • We believe that children are born with a sense of wonder. We encourage children to think, reason, question, experiment, makes choices, develop social and practical skills, become independent, and to love learning. To us, your CHILD is a unique individual, equipped with his own plan of development, and his own methods and terms of mastering surroundings.
  • We support a hands-on approach to learning for all ages. We provide hands-on experience in language arts, early math, logic and reasoning, science, arts, music, movement, gardening, and cooking. Our STEAM curriculum weaves academic skills into hands-on projects, activities, and games. Our reading program is phonics-based.
  • We stress the importance of the life of the child within a group because we believe that society is continuously changing, and children need the skills of living in a group to work well with others. We strongly encourage children to express their needs though words as good communication is a vital part of life. We believe all children have the right to feel good about themselves and it is the responsibility of all teachers to nurture the child’s self-esteem.
  • Children explore the world through thematic units. These themes help children know who they are, appreciate their community, their environment, their history, and the world at large, become well-rounded individuals, and make healthy life choices. We use project-based approach within the theme to encourage children to express themselves artistically.
  • Our enrichment program introduces children to the new experiences and hobbies without the hassle of driving to and from extracurricular lessons for parents! Our enrichment program includes Spanish classes, Mandarin Chinese classes, dance classes, music & singing, theater, zoology program.
  • Our educational approach combines the best practices in the field of early childhood development.

We respect and support each family and their diverse backgrounds, beliefs and input. We make sure that your child has everything they need to succeed. Not just strong early childhood educational foundation but an all-inclusive touch. Providing from organic and nutritious meals to blankets at nap time. We are your child’s cozy home away from home.

Computers in US departments are half a century outdated

The work of many some government services in the US is practically paralyzed due to outdated computers for 30-60 years. There are practically no programmers who remember how it works. The other day, the head of the Federal Employment Service (EDD), Sharon Hillard, said that even if Congress comes to an agreement on the size of the next wave of unemployment benefits, California will need up to 20 weeks to start paying. According to her, this is due to a literally “antique” computer document processing system that runs on an outdated programming language created back in the late 50s of the last century. Additional federal payments of $600 per week, which started in March, ceased to be paid on July 31. Millions of unemployed Americans face dire financial hardship as Congress once again failed to agree on the size and structure of a new round of contributions due to financial disagreements. [Note by Californista: Lack of work and unemployment benefits for many means automatic loss of health insurance and the inability to receive any medical care, including treatment for coronavirus.]

Reverse Racism: White men in Hollywood complain, fear and lose their jobs.

Hollywood hit by an unprecedented crisis: actors, writers and producers warn of “reverse racism” in the film industry that has created a “toxic” climate for middle-aged white men. As wood security shields slowly disappear from Los Angeles storefronts, and movie studios slowly start resuming film production, an unusual heat wave has hit Hollywood. Iconic boulevards melt in 40-degree temperatures, and hot winds blow over mansions in Beverly Hills. Shaken by the #MeToo movement, paralyzed by the coronavirus, the $50 billion American film industry is trying to crawl out of four months of dormancy – only to find itself in a whole new world where controversy is growing even faster than a thermometer. – Here and below is a translation into Russian of the sensational > articles < in the UK edition of Dailymail on 11 July 2020 (translated by Californista) -.

CALIFORNIA DECIDES TO MAKE DISCRIMINATION LEGAL

“Affirmative discrimination” is a technical term coined by advocates of favoring various minorities. Yesterday, legislators in the largest state in the US managed to put to a popular vote the repeal of a law prohibiting any discrimination based on race and gender in admission to public universities, public office, and government contracts. The anti-discrimination law was passed in California 25 years ago and could be repealed as early as November if a majority of Californians vote for it. nine0003

As the Governor of California began easing lockdowns across the state, Los Angeles Health Commissioner Barbara Ferrer told the press that the lockdown in Los Angeles would be extended for at least another three months. “It’s just impossible to cancel it sooner!” she declared. These words caused panic among the press and residents of the city, forcing Mayor Eric Garcetti to make softening, but completely incomprehensible statements. nine0006

    Movies: Cool School

Rise of Abstract Expressionism on the US West Coast as the voice of the Big Lebowski

Cool SchoolIn the 50s, New York professed the religion of two families – the Guggenheims (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum) and the Rockefellers (MoMA), plus, in the neighborhood, unpacked their emigrant suitcases with the modernism of Leo Castelli. Nevertheless, New York will remain in history as the museum capital of the United States, Chicago as the center of art education, and Los Angeles and San Francisco as the birthplace of the gallery business and the art market in general.

Cool School is a movie about the first art enthusiasts of the middle of the 20th century who replaced the gold diggers in the historical region of the Gold Rush. The fever will come later, from 1960s – it is in Los Angeles that the first solo exhibition of Andy Warhol will be held, a lifetime retrospective of Marcel Duchamp and the foundation of the Museum of Modernism will be laid, which will eventually become the LACMA Museum of Contemporary Art. The protagonist of the picture is not an artist: this is the Ferus Gallery, opened by an art historian in a suit and tie, and for two years working at a loss. Nevertheless, the iconic artists of the “new American art” will fully declare themselves through the gallery: Clifford Still, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella and the mentioned Andy Warhol. And in it there is a place for a branch of the young (1962) of the San Francisco-based Artforum magazine and will host the first courses for beginner collectors. The gallery will exist for less than 10 years and break up into private businesses, the wife of one co-founder will go to another, and New York, brought up on Hollywood Boulevard, will receive art stars in transit through the Venice Biennale – all this will not be shown in the film. But in vain.

The US West Coast art market immediately became inseparable from Hollywood: shared parties, shared banned substances, shared women and men, and as a result, art collectors among movie stars. Hollywood did not bypass the “Cool School”. In addition to living artists reflecting in the first person on the ups and downs of the past, a significant part of the film is occupied by actor Dennis Hopper, silently nodding in agreement with the artists, cigar in hand. Off-screen text is read by Jeff Bridges – the case when you regret that the text is off-screen, and not the narrator himself, sitting in the frame in a bathrobe from The Big Lebowski with a glass of his favorite cocktail with an intolerant name. Nevertheless, the abundance of chronicles, facts, memories and reasoning make “Cool School” a really high-quality and truthful film about the history of American art.50s. With only one “but”: artists usually know only half the truth.

The most interesting movie quotes according to AI:

We ended up in a young city not filled with art. There were no barriers for us – Los Angeles “besides the cinema” did not have a cultural past that would put pressure on us.

    John Baldessari, artist

Paris transferred art to New York, New York transferred art to Los Angeles. Lights went on around us, cameras turned on and a voice said: “Guys, you are on the air!” nine0006

    Ed Birial, artist

What kind of art market can we talk about if there were no French restaurants in Los Angeles in the mid-1950s? And the only two restaurants that existed were filled with Hollywood stars.

    Don Factor, collector

The art “in 1950s LA” was very much like Paul Klee’s art – cubist kitsch. Such consumer goods can still be found today on the coasts of resort towns like Laguna Beach. nine0006

    Hal Glicksman, Curator

Museums didn’t like contemporary art. Once in the museum, the works of contemporary authors were kept in storerooms – if someone wanted to see it, it was sent to the warehouse. Typically, these were students who looked at contemporary art for educational purposes.

    Ken Price, artist

Whatever epithets were given to abstract expressionism: it was communist, anarchist, ugly and thoughtless. A whole war was waged around him. nine0006

    Hol Glicksman, curator

Why do you wear a suit to work? I asked .

“Because I have to look like a businessman,” he replied.

Shirley Nelsen Hopps, wife of the founder of Ferus Gallery

In order to build an art market in California, it was necessary to build a system: galleries support artists, artists create works, critics mark artists, museums acknowledge, and collectors buy. It took almost 20 years. nine0006

At that time, there were two types of artists: some taught painting, wanting to have a regular salary and social protection, while others did not need it. They were real artists.

    Peter Pledges, art critic

I would compare the artists of that time to surfers on the boards: there were so few of them in Los Angeles that you could know all the surfers without exception. Exactly the same was the case with artists.

    Billy Al Brengston, artist

Art turned out to be a great alternative for the younger generation: life around was dangerous, and art smacked of romance. Many doubted whether they would survive their 30th birthday, someone lacked drama in life – all this gave art.

At the very first exhibition of contemporary art in the first gallery that opened all the works were bought.

It’s terrible – how many drugs were at the opening of the exhibitions.

Shirley Nelsen Hopps, wife of the founder of Ferus Gallery

One day – and this was in 1965 or 1966 – people suddenly came to the opening in luxurious clothes and jewelry. And then I realized that something had seriously changed.

    Don Factor, collector

An art dealer is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, this is curatorial work when you make a choice. On the other hand, this is financial work when you make money. One without the other does not work in this world. nine0006

    Irving Bloom, Art Dealer

Cool School is a black-and-white film: not only historical footage, but even contemporary interviews are deliberately devoid of color. The only exceptions are the works of artists and the last shots, when the chronicle of an amateur camera of the early 1970s suddenly acquires color. At the same time, you understand: the “school” is over, the market begins.
