What age is preschool?
Two years prior to starting kindergarten is typically the age most children start preschool. Preschool programs, also known as Pre k or Pre-K, often set an enrollment minimum age of 3 years old. Parents and caregivers can spend a great deal of time researching if preschool is right for their child. Preschool can be seen as a way to jumpstart into kindergarten. Additionally, the benefits of Pre-K are compelling.
Benefits of Pre K programs for students:
- Children in preschool and Pre-K programs are more likely to have a more natural, smooth transition into kindergarten and elementary school.
- Children with special needs in district Pre-K and preschool programs are identified earlier than those who wait until beginning elementary school. This allows them a head start for receiving services.
- Children ages 3-5 with disabilities are entitled to no-cost special services through PPCD (Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities).
- Dual language learners and economically disadvantaged students benefit more from Pre-K than their more advantaged or English-speaking peers.
PreK Curriculum and Teaching Strategies
Traditional public school districts adhere to state guidelines and standards for all schoolchildren. Pre k curriculum and teaching strategies are developed and provided by educators and degreed child development experts. PreK curriculum is reviewed and assessed by the state’s education agency or education department. The pre-k curriculum must meet state standards set by the board of education.
Creating a Learning Environment for Young Children
Effective preschool classrooms are places where children feel well-cared-for and safe. They are places where children are valued as individuals and where their needs for attention, approval, and affection are supported. They are also places where children can acquire a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills needed for future school success.
- Young children need teachers who welcome all children to their classrooms. This includes children from various cultures whose first language is not English, as well as those with disabilities.
- Young children need teachers who take time to work with them individually, in small groups, and sometimes with the entire class. This helps them develop their cognitive and social skills, their language abilities, and their interest in learning new things about the world.
- Young children need instruction to develop the thinking, language, and early literacy skills needed for continued school success.
Effective preschool teachers and child care providers:
- Know when children develop new ideas and concepts on their own and when it is important to explain things to them step-by-step.
- Encourage children to participate in classroom activities and honor classroom rules.
- Listen to what children say and expand upon their language while building their vocabulary and background knowledge.
- Know when to teach directly, when to provide time for exploration and discovery, when to practice skills, and when to encourage creativity.
- Plan challenging activities that have a purpose.
- Know how to help children learn to work together to resolve their conflicts.
- Encourage children to respect each other’s time and personal belongings.
- Provide many opportunities for conversations among children and adults.
- Know how to establish and maintain order in a classroom but in a manner that permits the children to learn how to participate in and enjoy learning.
- Arrange the classroom in a way that enhances their work with children and how the children spend their time.
Head Start Program
The largest Pre K program in America is part of the Head Start program, which is administered by the Office of Head Start within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The Office of Head Start grants funding and oversees the agencies that provide Head Start services, as well as training and technical assistance.
Head Start programs prepare preschool children for success in school by serving low-income families in order to help close the socio-economic divide. The program was designed to meet the emotional, nutritional, and social needs of disadvantaged children in a positive learning environment.
Early Head Start serves children ages birth to 5 years old, while Head Start enrollment ages are between 3 and 4 years old. Children who are 3 years old prior to September 1 are eligible to apply for Head Start. Families applying for Head Start services must meet poverty guidelines, and those receiving public assistance such as TANF are automatically eligible. Early Head Start programs are available to the family until the child turns 3 years old and is ready to transition into Head Start or another pre-K program.
Early Head Start and Head Start programs offer a variety of resources and support, depending on the needs of their communities. The programs cater to the cultural and ethnic heritage of each local Head Start family. Some of the highlights and benefits of these programs include:
Early Learning Experiences
Head Start children are introduced to language and literacy at a young age. They develop their social skills and concept understanding through relationships with others, planned and spontaneous play and instruction, and individualized learning experiences.
Early Health Awareness
Head Start children receive nutritious meals and health and development screenings. Families are connected with medical, dental, and mental health support. Children are allowed to explore and thrive in their environment in order to develop physical and motor skills.
Early Family Engagement
Head Start families engage in their child’s learning, therefore the parent-child relationship strengthens. The program helps parents achieve financial, housing, and educational goals with community support and guidance.

Angleton ISD Pre-K and Kindergarten Small Group Learning
In Angleton ISD’s Westside Elementary school, small-group learning pairs students with similar abilities. The program pushes a higher-performing group further along and encourages deeper learning, like reading a higher-level book. A group that may be struggling with a certain lesson works with teachers individually instead of learning as a whole class. The learning strategies allow one-on-one attention for students and give a better, more effective learning environment for every level of learning.
Angleton ISD PreK Music Class
In Angleton ISD, pre-K teachers provide entertaining environments in their music rooms so that students leave 5th grade with a love of music. Their goal is to teach students how to move to music at a young age in order to foster an appreciation for music that will carry on into the future.
Angleton ISD- Why is Pre-K Important?
All Angleton ISD Elementary schools offer pre-k programs. Pre-kindergarten teaches significant social, physical, emotional, and thinking skills, and it prepares children for success in kindergarten and beyond. Pre-K is a great place to prepare for kindergarten, and the curriculum includes introductions to blending letters, reading, socialization, and communication.
Alief ISD’s Innovative PreK Experience
Alief ISD’s innovative interactive pre-k program offers an exciting classroom environment where kids can fully engage with the materials in the room, the graphics on the walls, and different programs around the room. The program r gives special opportunities for kids to learn through hands-on experiences and interactive activities from program to program. Preschool – Montclare School
Three’s Morning Program
8:30 am–12:15 pm – morning program
Montclare offers multiple programs for our three-year-olds who all come five days a week. At this age, socialization begins to blossom, and cooperative play becomes central to their school experience. While the children delve into a multi-sensory, hands-on pre-writing program, they also begin to investigate the basic elements of pre-math through block building, sorting activities, sand and water play, and games. Our 3s begin to tackle the basics of writing through Handwriting Without Tears using Mat Man and other developmentally appropriate tools. At various times during the day, the 3s engage in a variety of table-top activities handling manipulatives, creating patterns, completing puzzles, and participating in other fine-motor activities. Many avenues of our curriculum are layered and interwoven throughout the school day.
Our older 3s practice kindergarten readiness skills as a number of these students, born between 9/1- 12/31, are eligible for public school programs (NYC Public Kindergarten students must turn 5 by December 31 of the year they enter kindergarten; while independent schools have a September 1 birthday cutoff for entry.)
All of our 3s enjoy our exciting, enriched classroom curriculum throughout the year, including an autumn leaf hunt in Central Park, our Cultures Festival celebrating different cultures around the world and our school, and Theater Week, where each classroom produces a play or a musical.
Enrichment includes:
- gross-motor-play in our two gyms, one with a climbing wall
- yoga
- rooftop, outdoor play-space
- art studio
- music
- movement
- library
Three’s Extended Day
12:15 pm–2:30 pm – extended day
Our Extended Day program begins at 12:15 PM with lunch. This is an excellent social time for the children to chat and get to know each other as well as the teachers. After lunch, children have “Book and Rest.” Every child is different, and this often becomes apparent during rest-time. Older 3s may spend time listening to soft music, audiobooks, or quietly interacting with their neighbor. For some of our 3s, this may be a time to nap. After book and rest, Extended Day students will participate in various activities including free-play in the classroom, and active play in one of our two gym spaces or the roof (weather permitting). The teacher will also prepare special activities related to the children’s interests and needs.
You have the option to enroll in Extended Day from 1 to 5 days a week. Following Extended Day, you will have the option of enrolling your child in Afterschool Enrichment Classes (2:30 – 3:30 PM).
Afterschool Enrichment Classes are available for 3s and 4s from 2:30-3:30 PM.

»: students complete the program of the first four classes in three years of study.
I’ll tell you what kind of project this is, how the selection for classes is carried out, and whether such a high pace of learning suits all children.
What kind of project
“Effective Elementary School”, aka “1-3” for short, is an accelerated learning project in primary grades.
Clause 21 of the Order of the Ministry of Education dated May 31, 2021 No. 289 on the approval of the Federal State Educational Standard of Primary General Education
Presentation of the project for the Moscow RegionPDF, 1.6MB
The peculiarity of this program is that children study the material of the first and second grade in one year: before the New Year they are first-graders, and after they are second-graders. The third and fourth grades are no different from the regular program, except that the children are a little younger than students in parallel classes.
Not all Moscow educational institutions have classes at the Effective Primary School. There is no single portal where you can see if the school is participating in the project. To find out if such classes will be recruited, parents will have to independently search for information on the school website or call the secretariat.
What are the requirements for first-graders to participate in the project
Formal requirements for students are not specified in official documents, but usually schools indicate them on the website or tell parents personally: this helps to reduce the risk that the child will feel uncomfortable at school.
Here are a few things that schools usually pay attention to.
Child’s age. It is believed that to participate in the project, the child must be seven years old by September 1: at this age, children are usually ready for school and able to withstand the increased workload. But at their discretion, schools have the right to take younger children if they are convinced that they are able to cope with the program.
Skills. The child must be able to read in whole words and count to ten: there will be no time in the first grade accelerated program to learn these skills from scratch. Children are taught to write.
/list/1-class-prava/
What parents of first-graders can demand from the school
Psychological readiness. The child must be motivated to study and psychologically ready for school: sit at a desk, listen to a teacher, do homework. Officially, they are not in the first grade, but in an effective beginning it is difficult to cope with studies without them. To assess the skills, you can take the child for a consultation with a psychologist.
How selection is made
In Moscow, the distribution of children to schools begins in November. If children went to a kindergarten in a certain school complex, they are transferred to one of the schools in the same complex at the request of their parents.
Enroll in a school in Moscow
Enroll in a school in the Moscow Region
Parents of those children who did not go to the kindergarten at the school or did not attend the kindergarten at all, apply on the Mos-ru portal from April 1.
In the Moscow Region, from April 1, they begin to enroll children who live in the territory assigned to the school, as well as beneficiaries. Everyone else can apply to the desired school in July.
Selection for project classes usually takes place in April-May both in Moscow and the Moscow Region. Families that have not yet applied to the school can also be selected.
In order for a child to participate in the competition, parents must write an application at the school for an independent diagnosis. The sample will be issued there.
The announcement of the application deadline appears on school websites that have such classes a week or two before the diagnosis, but it may not be. For example, our school has an e-mail distribution for parents of future first graders, and the children brought the application on the day of diagnosis.
An example of an application to be signed at our school
Selection consists of two stages:
- Independent diagnostics of readiness for accelerated learning. These are tests with tasks for logic, counting and reading, which change every year. The work is reviewed by the Department of Education. The results appear in a few weeks. After that, the school sets its passing score, taking into account the results of applicants.
- Interview with a school psychologist. It is necessary to check the psychological readiness of the child for more serious stress than in the usual first grade. Instead of this stage, the school can include a psychological test in the diagnosis: for example, invite the child to draw or color something.

How to enroll a child in the first grade through public services
After the announcement of the results and taking into account the opinion of the psychologist, the parents make the final decision on education in the class “1-3” and write an application for training according to an individual curriculum.
How they study in the classes of the project
In this project, children study according to the standard general education program “School of Russia”, and they have no more lessons in the schedule than their peers from regular classes. A higher learning rate is achieved due to the fact that children do not spend half a year studying letters and examples like 1 + 1, but come already prepared and therefore easily move forward in the program. At the same time, intensive learning most often requires the involvement of parents in the educational process, especially in the first school year.
After school, children will have free extracurricular activities: chess, logic, in-depth study of the Russian language, literature, and mathematics. The list of additional classes is determined by the school. These classes are optional: you can pick up circles according to the interests of the child or do something extra at this time outside of school.

How much does it cost to get a child into the first grade
In other classes of the same school, the composition of extracurricular activities may be different.

After the end of each class, students write diagnostic papers on the Russian language, literature and mathematics.

If it turns out that the child finds it difficult to cope with the accelerated program, he can be transferred to a regular class. As a rule, this happens before the end of the first grade. The school cannot prohibit the transfer later, just in this case it will turn out that the child will start studying in the second grade, and then return to the first.
If everything is in order with academic performance, from January the child will study in the second grade.

Pros and cons of the project
The “Effective Primary School” has many advantages: motivated and well-educated children can save a year in primary school, boys will have an extra attempt to enter a university before the army, and thanks to the selection, the composition of the class is homogeneous and there is no need to focus on those who are lagging behind. If a child is well prepared for school and bored in the usual first grade, he will not have to jump through the classroom and study with older children.
The project also has shortcomings. For example, children will be younger than students in other classes of the parallel. In secondary school, performance can drop due to a sharp increase in academic requirements – simply because children will not be ready for this age yet. Parents are likely to have to help them with their studies. This can be difficult if both parents work full time and there are no other adults at home to take over the child’s activities.

How I protect the rights of my children at school
It will also be difficult to combine studying in the project class with serious sports, music or art school: the child most likely will not have so much free time due to the accelerated pace of the school curriculum.
Personal experience
I have been following this project since 2018 and consider it a good choice for prepared children. In our school, testing took place at the end of April, my daughter got into the class of the project. We counted on this and were very happy.
My daughter has been going to school on Saturdays for the second year. These courses are taught in a children’s development center by a primary school teacher. Last year, there were doubts about the psychological readiness of her daughter, but now it is clear that she will cope with the load.

One of the reasons for the misunderstanding of school material is the inability of the child to HEAR and REALIZE what he HEARS. The first step of the PRODUCTIVE READING program is just PRODUCTIVE LISTENING.
