Kaptur still skidded. As luck would have it, into a hefty block of ice. A characteristic crunch – and fragments remained blackened in the snow. “These extra parts fell off,” the instructor commented. A fracture of the lower jaw did not knock out the crossover, and the race continued, but was it not in vain that he suffered? The Renault Winter Driving School, although it is being held for the second year, still exists behind closed doors, that is, for journalists.
Usually a driving school from a car manufacturer is a story about how to drive a fast and powerful car and not crash. And a little more about its features. Mitsubishi recently showed off how great the new Eclipse Cross can drift thanks to its smart drivetrain. All-wheel drive Duster and Kaptur are much simpler – a multi-plate clutch in the rear wheel drive and a minimum of electronics. The basis of the Russian model range of the company is budget models, which in Europe do not wear a rhombus, but the nameplate of the Romanian Dacia. We no longer have the sporty Clio RS and Megane RS.

Not at all. Recently, the Koleos crossover has replenished the lineup – large and expensive looking. The stylish Kaptur closed the gap between it and the budget line. The company even has its own show car – the caterpillar Duster. The status of the French automaker is growing, so entertainment is now appropriate for him.
The learning process is serious: exciting competitions, difficult tracks, professional instructors who have worked with premium brands. And most importantly – “Dusters” on training spikes, which should not be afraid of ice.
The most difficult thing is to sit optimally – there is no steering wheel adjustment in either the Capture or the Duster. In the big Koleos, this is easier to do, but the feedback from the car is worse. A scattering of icons is lit on the dashboard – the stabilization system is forcibly turned off here and does not interfere with the process. First of all, this is important for Koleos – no matter how you press the ESP OFF button, after 50 km / h the electronics will come to life again. Without electronics, a big shiny crossover with the grace of an Olympic skater writes circles and zigzags across the ice field.
Duster and Capture are easier – they are more nimble, sharp, and the ESP activation threshold is 80 km / h in Lock mode. At the same time, the clutch is not completely blocked in them either. The more you turn the steering wheel, the less traction is transferred back. Therefore, in order to enter the circle sharply, I twist the steering wheel and press the gas, and then, when the car began to slide, I straighten the front wheels. It turns out that turning the “piglets” and flying into a skid into an imaginary garage is not so difficult even on a regular budget crossover. But turn on the stabilization system – on one of the training Capturs this happened suddenly – and the obligatory constipation program.
All this figure skating is training before two tracks: ice and snow. The first is Duster on tires with special 3 mm training spikes. They bite into the ice and are fantastically tenacious in corners. The main thing here is not to twist the steering wheel and not let go of the gas, even if the car tries to drive sideways on straight lines.
For a flatter and longer track prepared Kaptur on regular spikes. Here the speeds are higher, and the grip is worse. On the training ground, the Kaptur did not slide as readily as the Duster due to the heavier front end. On slippery surfaces, it easily and naturally passes several turns in a row in a controlled skid. The main thing is to feel the balance and not make gross mistakes. It was worth switching down with a slightly turned steering wheel, as the Kaptur unwound and threw it onto an ice block.
Departures in other places ended without any damage at all – the thick bumpers of Kaptur and Duster, unpainted on the bottom, easily took a hit. A large clearance often made it possible to return to the track on their own, without calling a technical tug. Off-road, the more urban Kaptur with an “automatic” is not inferior to the diesel “Duster” at all. The geometry is slightly worse, but if you pass a deep hole diagonally, then its icy edge does not reach the bumper.
The Kaptur manages to drive surprisingly far on the virgin snow, and the steep slope storms confidently. That’s just Renault plans to abandon the middle-aged 4-speed “automatic” in favor of the CVT. Will this reduce the off-road performance of cars? For now, there are more than enough of them.
Renault Winter Driving School offers very extreme conditions, and it is unlikely that a decent Duster or Kaptur owner would do something like this without the supervision of instructors. He usually does not go to amateur competitions in the fields or on icy lakes. It turns out that in vain: Kaptur or Duster are able to ride a lot of fun.
