Demolition of the original Bay High building began in 1976, allowing more renovated facilities to be built and more students to attend at the same time. By 1977, this new building (now called Building 1) houses the school’s offices as well as two hallways of classrooms.
Further renovations will take place in 2000 with the construction of a new library building and cafeteria. After the new cafeteria was opened to students in 2001, the original building was used for storage and occasionally wrestling practice until it was demolished in early 2018. beginning of 2018.

Rutherford High School offers a variety of programs to its students. Rutherford leads the chapter of the International Baccalaureate Program, the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) and the Academy of Communications and Technology (Com/Tech). In addition, Extended Placement dual enrollment and honors courses are available to all students. Extracurricular activities include sports, service clubs, and many other student organizations. Rutherford has more themed academies than any other Bay County school.
Grades
Under Florida’s A++ Plan, Rutherford High School consistently received “B” or “C” grades, and the school’s 2006-2007 grade was “D”. [3] The school’s current theme is “Everything you need!” with the aim of achieving an “A” school and raising the level of achievement of all students in accordance with No child is left behind.
Reviews and Ratings
Rutherford High School received several negative reviews; for example GreatSchools.org gave Rutherford a 4 out of 10 rating with mixed reviews from the community. [4]
Controversy
In May 2019, Rutherford High School caused some controversy when a science teacher wrote an offensive comment “What is this? Absolutely no credit” to the student’s homework. This led to complaints from parents who pointed out the teacher’s inappropriate manners. The teacher was punished by the administration. [1]
Hurricane Michael
Like most schools in Panama City, Florida, Category 5 damage was caused by Hurricane Michael in October 2018, Rutherford High School was used as an accident shelter. The residents of the orphanage were dissatisfied with the school’s role as an orphanage. Others recalled its unsanitary conditions, such as toilets clogged with feces, poor quality food, and the shelter’s lack of qualified, licensed doctors. Following the hurricane, it was announced that Rutherford would be temporarily integrated into a 6-12 year old school for the remainder of 2018-19school year and for the 2019-20 school year after nearby Everitt High School was hit hard. [5]
Educational programs
International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate (IB) began its authorization on campus in 1992. Rutherford High School’s IB program serves as a magnet program for the Bay County School District. Kathy Rutland is the Program Coordinator for the 2015-2016 academic year.
IB grades (grades 11 and 12) are offered in six parallel academic areas: Language A1 : (First Language), including the study of passages from world literature, Language B : (Second Language) or Second Language A, Individuals and Societies (Social Sciences), Experimental Sciences , Mathematics , and Arts and Electives . Pre-IB courses are also offered in all subjects for 9th and 10th graders. [6]
Communication Technology
Rutherford’s Communication Technology course, also known as ComTech, consists of classes that teach students how to use many computer programs such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, and Adobe Premier. In addition to these programs, Comtech also offers some core classes such as English and History. However, these classes take a different approach to teaching students. ComTech’s curriculum is technology-driven, so many, if not all, classwork and lessons are built around programs such as Microsoft Powerpoint, Excel, and Word. 9ISLAM. Club

CONTENTS
Name
The project in this once unincorporated part of Northwest Florida has had previous names such as Floriopolis, Park Resort and Harrison. In 1906, the complex was named Panama City, and it was first incorporated as Panama City in 1909. When Panama City was incorporated in 1909, its original city limits were 15th Street (Hwy 98) to the north, Balboa Avenue to the west, and Bay Bay. Avenue to the east. According to Panama City History , published by Public Library Panama City , George Mortimer West hoped to stimulate real estate development in Bay County during a period of heightened public interest in building the Panama Canal by changing the name of the city from Harrison to Panama City. because the direct line between Chicago and the national capital of Panama in Central America crossed the city of Florida. Also, because the required meanders around land formations on the sea route to the canal added launch distance at other ports, Panama City was the closest developed port on the US mainland to the Caribbean entrance to the Panama Canal.
