Midland is a city in the United States, located in the western part of the state of Texas, the administrative center of the district of the same name. The 2010 Census had a population of 111,147, and the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the city had a population of 142,344 in 2018. In June 1881, the Texas and Pacific Railway, which was then building a railroad between Dallas and El Paso, established Midway station, located in the middle between these cities. The first settler near the station was Herman Garrett, who drove his flock of sheep from California in 1882. On January 4, 1884, after several more ranchers moved into the region, a post office was opened. Due to the fact that a settlement with the name Midway already existed, the city was registered under the name Midland. Midland was formed in March 1885 and the city became the county seat. In January 1886, the building of the district court was built, and branches of the Methodist and Baptist churches were also formed, the first school was opened. At 189In 0 year the First National Bank of Midland was opened, the city became a regional financial and transport center. At the beginning of the 20th century, the inhabitants of the city produced water using mill-drawn wells, and there was a mill in almost every yard, which is why Midland was nicknamed Windmill Town. On July 16, 1906, the inhabitants of the city adopted a charter, and the formation of local authorities began. In 1910, after a series of major fires, a fire department was established, as well as a new water supply system. K 19In 1414, there were two banks, a cotton gin, three lumber mills, a Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, and Presbyterian churches in the Midland, and an opera house. In 1915, the Midland and Northwestern Railroad came to the city, connecting Midland with Seminole. In the early 1920s, an oil boom began in the region. By 1929, 36 oil companies had offices in the Midland. The city has a new airport and expensive hotels. However, soon, with the onset of the Great Depression and the discovery of fields in East Texas, the demand for local oil fell sharply, many oil companies laid off workers or closed. K 19In 32, about a third of the city’s residents were left without work. The region’s economy began to recover after the Texas Railroad Commission began to regulate oil production, and the federal government set tariffs on oil imports from other countries. During World War II, the demand for oil increased even more. In addition, the money was brought in by the nearby US Army Air Force Base Midland Army Air Force Base, which was one of the largest in the world at that time. From 1942 to 19For 45 years, the Army Air Force Bombardier School fighter school worked at the base. After the closure in 1946, an airport began operating on the site of the base. Oil production in the region grew rapidly; by 1950, 215 oil-related companies had offices in the Midland. In 1950, the city’s Chamber of Commerce introduced the Midland City Plan to develop the city’s economy. Midland Memorial Hospital opened the same year, and the Midland Symphony Orchestra began operating in 1953. At 19In 1959, the library and museum of the district were opened. In 1968, as part of the fight against racial segregation, schools for white and black children were merged. Midland College opened in 1969. In the 1970s, the college moved to a new building, and the Permian Basin Museum and the Marian Blakemore Planetarium were built.
