Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How does my family/child qualify for the GSRP Preschool?

A. The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is funded by the Michigan Department of Education and has defined a list of eligibility factors, primarily income. Information collected during the formal application process determines eligibility status and placement.

Q. What documents are required for GSRP Preschool?

A. You will need to submit your child’s certified birth certificate, immunization record, physical/health appraisal completed in the past year, proof of income, and proof of residence that your family resides in (current gas/electric, rent/lease/mortgage document). Other required paperwork will need to be completed with the Preschool teaching team prior to your child starting, along with GRPS online registration.

Q. Is my child automatically enrolled once I complete the application for GSRP Preschool?

A. The intake application is the first step in the process to applying for preschool. After completing the application, you will still need to provide income documentation, additional information to verify eligibility, and complete the enrollment process. Priority for enrollment is based on family income and additional life experiences. Tuition free programs are required to follow prioritization guidelines when enrolling children into State Funded Preschool programs. Eligibility is primarily based on family income (federal poverty level), life experiences and child’s age.

The Great Start Readiness Program is funded by the Michigan Department of Education and has a defined list of eligibility factors. Preschool applications are reviewed for Head Start eligibility first. Each child must qualify for the preschool program based on guidelines that include income verification and documentation of other school readiness risk factors.

Prioritization

  1. Children who meet the current age entry date (September 1), whose family income is between 0-100% federal poverty level (FPL), or meets one of the established categorical eligibility criteria.
  2. Children who meet the current age entry date and whose family’s income is between 0%‐250% FPL.
  3. Children who meet the current age entry date, whose family income is over 250% FPL and will pay tuition to participate only if seats are still available.
  4. Children who are in the age gap entry date of September 2 to December 1 whose family income is between 0%-250% FPL.

Q. What is the age eligibility for GSRP Preschool?

A. Children must be 4 by September 1st of the current year. If an age waiver is offered by the state (yearly decision made by the State), this would also allow children who are four between September 2nd of the current year and December 1st of the current year. Children who are 5 by September 1st of the current year are too old and are not eligible to attend GSRP.

Q. When is the first day of GSRP Preschool?

A. Preschool students who have been placed usually begin the week after the elementary students begin. The assigned preschool teacher will communicate your specific start date once required documents are received, required paperwork is completed, and online registration is completed.

Q. Is bus transportation available for my GSRP Preschool child?

A. Bus transportation is available for students who are attending their neighborhood (attendance area) school and are more than one mile away from their neighborhood (attendance area) school. Transportation is not available for students who are attending a school that is not their neighborhood (attendance area) school, including theme schools.

Our Programs – Kiddie Junction

Our 2’s program is a gentle introduction to preschool. Classes meet 2 or 3 days per week from September-June. In September, parents are welcome to stay with their child and work on separation slowly.

The focus of the 2’s program is teaching children to manage classroom routines, and share space/toys, and adult attention. Activities are developmentally appropriate for the shortened attention span of 2-year-olds.

Themes such as “Me & My Family”, “Animals”, “Seasons” and “Holidays” teach children about the world they live in. The introduction of colors, shapes, music, dramatic play, circle time, playground and art activities challenge the minds of curious 2’s.

Our 3’s program provides the opportunity for students to grow both socially and academically in a warm and caring classroom environment. Classes meet from 2-5 days per week, half day and full day options are available.

For many 3 year-olds, this is their first experience being away from a familiar adult and being part of a group independently. Children come to Kiddie Junction with unique personalities, varying levels of development and different life experiences. We recognize that each child is an individual, and tailor interactions to meet developmental needs.

3’s learn through a multi-sensory hands on approach, and enjoy practicing new skills independently during center time.  Themes focus on learning about the world around them and help students feel more self-confident in their new role as a member of our classroom community. Self-help skills are introduced alongside Language and Math concepts.

This year’s activities include: a Star Student Week for each student, holiday parties and sing-a-longs, a field trip to Long Island Children’s Museum, a Bring Your Grown Up to School Day, Scholastic Book Fair, and our end of year picnic.

Our Levittown contracted UPK program utilizes the same curriculum as our private 4’s program- Big Day for PreK. The UPK lottery determines entrance into the district program which runs 5 full days. Our private program offers families the option of 5 half or full days. Pre-K students who enroll in a full day program engage in half a day of private preschool and half a day of STEAM class.

The curriculum is very comprehensive, focusing on each area of development: Social/Emotional, Cognitive, Language, Math, Science, Social Studies and Gross/Fine Motor. Students meet for whole group mini-lessons on topics throughout the class as well as child-directed center time and gross motor time. Small group and individualized instruction takes place during center time to reinforce topics or provide enrichment.

4’s enjoy many of the same celebrations as the 3’s classes as well as an off-site end of year graduation ceremony.

The enrollment of children in the first grade turned into a scandal in Nizhny Novgorod. There was not enough space for all the students who wanted to go to school No. 103 in Verkhniye Pechery. Children who, by registration, belong to this school, did not pass. The city administration promises that one way or another every first grader will be at their desks in the fall. And locals say the overcrowding problem has been going on for years. nine0020

Class inequality

Elena Mudrova, a resident of Upper Pechora, took care of enrolling her child in school in advance. On April 1, from the very morning, she applied, enrolling her son in the nearby school No. 103. What was her surprise when she was informed in the summer that there would be no place for her child in the school.

“Next year my son will be 8 years old, we need to enroll in this, we can’t delay,” says Elena. “But we have almost twice as many children living on the site related to the school as there are places for them.” nine0003

Nearby schools – No. 22, No. 42 and No. 7 – are located 1.5 – 2 km from the 103rd. They also cannot boast of an abundance of free places, but so far they are ready to accept those who wish. That’s just the parents are not in a hurry.

“Why do we have to go to another school, where the child has to walk 20–30 minutes on foot or by bus, if school No. 103 is located in our yard?” – Nizhny Novgorod is perplexed.

The same situation has developed in almost 100 more families – out of 250 applications submitted to school No. 103, only 154 first-graders will receive places. After massive complaints from parents, the principal of the school was forced to invite them to a special meeting. That’s just nothing new Nizhny Novgorod there did not hear. nine0003

“They explained to us that the school enrolls the first 7 classes, where there will be 22 children,” added Elena Mudrova. – And the school cannot physically accept the rest of those who wish. Those children who got into the first grades got either on benefits or in turn.”

And the city department of education explained the procedure for enrolling in the school.

“According to federal law, children of law enforcement officers, military personnel and children whose older brothers or sisters are already studying at this school were first enrolled in the first classes,” the department noted. – Then those who applied earlier. Parents of children who were not enrolled in the first grades of school No. 103 were offered places in nearby educational institutions and in the Nizhny Novgorod region in general, in schools where there are free places. nine0003

The department noted that all children will be provided with places in the first grade by September 1st. Meanwhile, the situation around school number 103 has been heating up for more than a year.

Call for changes

School No. 103 is located in the densely populated neighborhood of Upper Pechery between the stops “Bogdanovicha” and “Akademicheskaya”. From all sides it is crowded with multi-apartment residential buildings, from 5 to 10 floors. In recent years, young families have been actively settling there, and their children have gradually received places in the school. And the problems with its overcrowding also gradually grew. nine0003

Already last year, 77 first-graders were denied places, and this year the number of children who did not get into school has only increased. Closely packed classes move from year to year to a step higher. And the number of students is growing like a snowball.

“The school is designed for 800 people, but in fact they study twice as many,” local residents, whose children go to 103, told us. – Primary classes study in two shifts, in high school there are options with three shifts. For lessons with high school students, almost the corridors come in handy, as there are simply not enough classrooms. Physical education lessons are carried out by combining three classes. nine0003

The principal of the school couldn’t find time to talk to us. But sources from among the teaching staff of the institution confirmed the overcrowding of the 103rd. In the administration of Nizhny Novgorod, they say that the second shift for the “beginners” from the 2nd to the 4th grade does not contradict the current legislation. They also note that an extension to the school will help solve the problem.

“The place intended for the placement of the annex was determined taking into account the possibility of placing the object on the land plot and its accessibility for residents,” explained the department of construction and overhaul of the administration of Nizhny Novgorod. – Currently, design estimates for the construction of the facility are being developed. The deadline for completion of work in accordance with the terms of the municipal contract is until the end of August. The projected extension is designed for 500 seats. nine0003

Construction of the extension is to be completed by 2024. True, the number of first-graders will also grow by that time.

Local residents also pin certain hopes on the School 800 building under construction in Pechory. There will be no priority for registration for children living nearby, since this is a private school. However, they have the right to get a place in the general queue. The school for 1,800 students is due to open this year.

Earlier, the Pravda-nn.ru website reported that the construction of the City of Sciences school in Dzerzhinsk would be completed at the end of 2022. nine0003

Children’s development centers in Grozny will help your child follow a certain vector of development, spend time with interest and benefit, and receive additional education. The rating of children’s development centers in Grozny and other cities of the country includes institutions of general development and narrowly focused ones. nine0003

The smallest children, of course, should be sent to children’s general development centers, where they will engage in a variety of interesting activities: sculpt from plasticine, play with toys, draw, dance. But the most important thing is that children’s early development centers in Grozny allow kids to explore the world and learn to actively communicate with peers in a team. In centers for older children, classes are held with a speech therapist to correct pronunciation, languages are studied, active pre-school training is held, master classes in needlework and children’s creativity, and classes with a psychologist. There are also centers for sports and dance training. These institutions are different from kindergartens and do not involve daytime stay with sleep, lunch, etc. Reviews of children’s development centers in Grozny will help you make the right choice.
