getCancelledCats().length > 0″ ng-click=”catSuggester.reacceptAll()”> CancelHouston (Texas). More Texas school districts are choosing to arm teachers and staff to improve campus safety.
According to the Texas Association of School Boards, out of more than 1,000 school districts in Texas, 228 have already made changes to their guardian or school marshal programs. At the beginning of the year, the number of such districts was 172.
An updated safety program allows districts to develop their own policies and requirements regarding teachers and educators who carry weapons. It requires educators to undergo a psychological assessment, 80 hours of training, and an annual proficiency test under the auspices of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, the same agency that trains and licenses officers.
According to TCOLE officials, there has been increased interest in the program following the recent school shootings. Since 2014, the commission has conducted a total of nine school marshal training courses. This summer alone, TCOLE held six sessions. There are currently 92 school marshals in Texas, with 73 more in the process of certification.
In some areas, teachers and administrators are also trained in the use of rifles and shotguns. The need for this is justified by the presence in schools of corridors up to 75-100 meters, as well as extensive parking lots.
School districts are not required to publish emergency and safety plans. The map below is a partial list compiled from announcements and county policy reports.
Given the unacceptably long response time of local law enforcement agencies, many rural areas have chosen their own option for arming personnel. About 150 independent school districts have their own police departments, and another 250 use full-time or part-time employees.
Since no ambulances enter schools until the shooter is deactivated, all classrooms and staff are provided with first aid kits, and school staff receive regular training in the District’s Civil Response Course.
