The Daily Walk

Many years ago I decided to add a daily walk around our neighborhood to our morning schedule. We started out small by walking around our long block. We clocked it in the car and found that it was six-tenth of a mile. That took about seventeen to twenty minutes depending on the skill set and age of the walkers…..

Transporting Daycare Kids

I know there are many types of agreements between parents and providers when it comes to having children in the provider’s vehicle. There are parents who want it for their kids and many who pay providers to transport their child to and from school and preschool. Some providers transport their own children to school and have field trips as a major selling point of their business…….

Sand castle – as a gift to the chosen one

In new research by zoologists from Stanford University
(Stanford University)
published in Frontiers magazine in
Ecology and Evolution, shown that
complex mating rituals of cichlid fish living in the African
Lake Malawi, arose as a result of very rapid evolution. Their
character directly depends on the adaptability of fish to live and
eat at one depth or another. On light sandy shallow waters
male cichlids build large “sand castles” that produce
impression on females. Males of those species that live on a larger
depth, prefer digging sand holes to building castles,
however, they compensate for this with a variety of swimming
demonstrations.

“The cichlids of Lake Malawi are famous for their diversity and rapid evolution.
their food habits, body shape and sexual characteristics, –
said Ryan York ( Ryan York), lead author
research. — In our work, we show for the first time that the rates
the evolution of their mating games is also extremely fast.”

The researchers built a DNA-based “pedigree
tree” for 75 of the 500 cichlid species of Lake Malawi, noting
the ability of males of each species to build castles or dig
pits. This tree looks rather disorderly so far: even at close
of related species that build castles, males often
dig holes and vice versa. Ryan York and colleagues believe that this
evidence that during the evolution of these species, the ability
building castles or digging holes arose repeatedly.

Lake Malawi is approximately 5 million years old. WITH
from the point of view of the process of evolution, this is very little. All
evolutionary changes in cichlid ecology, including mating rituals,
took place during this short period of time.

The authors of the study believe that the evolution of mating rituals of cichlids
primarily due to changes in the average depth by
on which each species feeds. Researchers have shown that fish
building castles live at an average depth of about 15 meters, and
digging holes – at 30 m. This is a completely understandable pattern:
building castles requires more effort, but produces
more impression on females only in light shallow waters, where ladies
can review and evaluate the work of the “builder”. In those species that
live at greater depths, where there is not enough light, efforts to
the construction of the castle will not pay off.

Accordingly, the proportions of the body of species – “diggers of holes” look
more adapted to life at greater depths. For example,
females and males of these species of cichlids are distinguished by a more elongated
upper jaw, which helps to catch fast moving prey –
zooplankton – in muddy water at the very bottom. The retina of their eyes is less
sensitive to ultraviolet light that does not reach depths.

Researchers believe that the energy strategy of species is
“hole diggers” is more advanced than those of castle-building species,
since digging holes takes less effort, and leaves a resource
also for marriage “dances”. Studying and comparing marital behavior
of these species in more detail in an aquarium, the researchers
found that male “hole diggers” invest twice
more time in demonstration behavior, such as swimming
in front of females, expanding their fins and gill covers to
look more impressive.

Sand castles and pits are used by fish only during
courtship and mating. If the female likes what she sees,
she lays her eggs in a hole or in a castle – according to her
mind – so that the male can fertilize her. Then the mother wears
fertilized eggs in the mouth for several weeks, and
all this time it does not feed, waiting for the offspring to be born.

Sand Castle Day / August 5, 2023

The first Saturday of August is the perfect day to go to the beach and build a beautiful sandcastle, as it is Sandcastle Day . This fun holiday serves to promote sand art and encourages people to try their hand.

A sandcastle, also called a sandcastle, is a type of sand sculpture that resembles a building, usually a castle, although not necessarily. Sand sculpture is considered to be the oldest form of sculpture in the world. It is believed that its history goes back to prehistoric times. While there is no hard evidence to support these claims, it is quite plausible because wet sand is a good sculpting material, even if the resulting sculptures are short-lived.

However, the first use of the term “sandcastle” was recorded only in the 19th century. It can be found in the book Father’s Conversations with Children, which was published in London in 1838. The child in this educational and religious book at one point asks his father to build a sandcastle. Various other publications confirm that building sandcastles was a popular maritime pastime in Britain in the mid-19th century.

Sand sculpture as an art form began to develop in the 20th century. Beach resorts have begun holding sand sculpture competitions as a marketing strategy to attract more holidaymakers. These competitions have evolved into modern sand sculpture festivals that are held all over the world. The world’s largest sand sculpture event is the International Sand Sculpture Festival in Portugal.

Simple sandcastles can be built by filling a bucket with wet sand, turning it upside down and removing the bucket, or by pouring in very wet sand to form a so-called drip castle. Of course, sculptors participating in sand sculpture festivals and competitions use more sophisticated methods to create intricate sand castles and other sculptures.

Sand sculptures are so popular that the Guinness Book of Records even has a list of achievements associated with them. Here are some of them (as of 2022):

The tallest sandcastle (21.16 m) was built by the Skulpturparken Blokhus team in Blokhus, Denmark in July 2021.

The longest sandcastle (10.48 km) was built by the students and staff of the Ellon Academy in Ellon, UK in September 1999.

The longest line of sandcastles (1924) was built in Brouwersdam, the Netherlands in September 2018.

The origin of Sand Castle Day is unknown, but don’t let that stop you from celebrating! Gather your friends or family, head to the nearest beach and spend the day building beautiful sandcastles.
