High school education in Honduras

Honduras is a state in Central America, the capital is the city of Tegucigalpa. In the north, Honduras is washed by the Caribbean Sea, in the southeast it borders on Nicaragua, in the south and southwest – on El Salvador and in the west – on Guatemala; in the south it adjoins the Gulf of Fonseca in the Pacific Ocean.

The largest cities in Honduras are San Pedro Sula, Puerto Cortes, La Ceiba, Tela. About 53% of the population lives in rural areas, 47% – in cities. The western part of the country is the most populated. Most of the population are mestizos, descendants of Indians and Spaniards. The official language is Spanish. The country is divided into 18 departments and a central (federal) district. The central federal district is formed by the country’s capital, Tegucigalpa, and its suburbs, Comayagüela. Under the 1982 constitution, the head of the executive branch is the president, who is directly elected, while legislative power is vested in the National Congress. Elections are held every 4 years. Honduras is an agricultural country, the main crops are bananas, coffee, tobacco, sugarcane, rice. Agriculture is predominantly plantation. American banana companies thrive on the Caribbean coast. The economy of the central mountain regions is based on the mining industry and subsistence agriculture. The estates that have survived from colonial times are mainly specialized in cattle breeding. The waters of the Caribbean off the northern coast of Honduras abound with fish and other seafood. The main fish species are lobsters and shrimp. Shrimp farms are located mainly on the Pacific Coastal Plain.

Most of the territory of Honduras is occupied by mountains and hills overgrown with forests. The highest ridges rise to a height of 2700 m above sea level. A deep valley cuts through the mountainous region from north to south, from the mouth of the Ulua River to the Gulf of Fonseca. The length of the valley is 280 km. The Caribbean coast is dominated by mountain ranges with steep slopes and sharp ridges. The north-east of the country is sparsely populated, as there is a swampy lowland – the Mosquito Coast with a huge lagoon of Karataska.
