How Much Money Does a Pediatric Oncology Physician Make in a Year? | Work
By Fraser Sherman Updated July 06, 2020
Pediatric oncologist jobs are intense. Working with kids who have cancer is not for the faint of heart, but saving their lives is an incredible experience, according to the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPHO). The pay is good, but pediatric oncologist hours usually run well above 40 per week.
Tip
The average pediatric oncologist salary is $211,000 a year. It takes four years of medical school, three years of pediatric training and a three-year oncology fellowship to earn it.
Pediatric Oncologist: Description
The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children says pediatric oncologists specialize in the research and treatment of cancer in kids, ranging from infants through the teenage years. Cancer in this age range is different from adult cancer and requires a specialist who knows how to treat children as well as the disease. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says the patient/doctor relationship is different because kids can’t always answer medical questions and they express their concerns differently than adults.
Children are at risk for fewer cancers than adults, so many pediatric oncologists are also pediatric hematologists, with the added field of childhood blood diseases. Pediatric oncology doctors, according to Rocky Mountain Hospital, deal primarily with leukemia, but may also deal with brain and spinal cord tumors, neuroblastomas, lymphomas and bone cancers. ASPHO says hematologist/oncologist jobs also handle blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia and hemophilia.
If you enter the pediatric oncologist field, you’ll spend a lot of hours at work. But ASPHO says you should be able to make time for a personal life.
Pediatric Oncologist: Education Requirements
Like other medical specialties, qualifying for pediatric oncologist jobs takes years. More years than most, APHSO says, as the doctors have two specialties: oncology and pediatrics.
First come the four years of medical school, then three years of training in a pediatric residency, learning to care for children. The final component is a three-year fellowship in oncology or oncology/hematology. The first year trains you in patient care, then there’s two years of experience on the research side.
Once you’ve completed all the training, you apply to AAP to take a certification test. At that point you’re good to go, though some doctors extend their research training for another year or two. Some doctors actually study long enough to acquire a doctorate in the field in addition to their MD.
Pediatric Oncologist: Industry
APHSO says some pediatric oncologist/hematologists are in private practice, but they are the exception. Most doctors in the field work for either a large hospital or are on the faculty of a medical school. Research into childhood cancers is a big field, and working for an established facility allows you to participate and benefit from the research. If you teach in the field, the work involves more hands-on training at patient bedsides than it does class lectures.
Some pediatric oncologist jobs focus on research, studying the cause and nature of cancer, and designing medical trials to find improved treatments. This requires added training in epidemiology, biostatistics and protocol design. Other doctors specialize in one particular type of tumor or blood disease.
The Zippia site says the average pediatric oncology salaryas of May 2020 is $211,000. The top 10 percent of professionals earn more than $307,000 a year, while the pediatric oncology salary for the bottom 10 percent is below $145,000.

Features of the profession
A malignant tumor can affect almost any organ, and many methods are used to treat it. Therefore, doctors of various fields are engaged in the treatment of oncological diseases: otolaryngologists, proctologists, vascular surgeons, dermatologists, etc., who have linked their careers with oncology. Cancer is treated surgically, with the help of chemotherapy, radiation, immuno- and hormone therapy. An oncologist specializes in one of these areas, but at the same time monitors the development of related areas. Without this, a holistic view of diagnosis and treatment is impossible. Of course, when a strategy for combating a disease is developed, a consultation (medical meeting) is held.
Fortunately, many types of cancer are now successfully treated. And the earlier the disease is detected, the more successful the treatment. Therefore, oncology pays great attention to early diagnosis, which is also carried out using blood tests for tumor markers. Ultrasound and radiation diagnostics are also used.
The specialty of an oncologist is one of the most difficult in medicine.
First, it requires extensive knowledge and skills, because cancer has many faces, sneaks up unnoticed, resists treatment and tends to spread throughout the body.
Secondly, cancer is a tragic disease. Despite advances in medicine, people continue to die from cancer. Every oncologist knows that he will not be able to cure some of his patients: someone was diagnosed too late, and someone was simply unlucky, and his type of cancer is especially difficult to treat, while someone gave up and refuses treatment himself.
But the more experienced the doctor, the more he knows. He shares his knowledge, developing science, passing on knowledge and experience to students. Someday medicine will learn to defeat any cancer. And then the oncologist profession will get rid of its gloomy halo. But even today, oncologists believe that it is possible and necessary to fight for the patient to the end. For example, Russian doctors categorically oppose euthanasia. As oncologist Mikhail Lichinitser (specialist in chemotherapy, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences) said in one of his interviews, medicine is moving forward, and it may happen that today a patient will be deprived of his life at his request, and tomorrow the necessary medicine will appear. You need to fight the pain and continue the treatment. “Today, euthanasia is a completely non-medical concept,” says the doctor. “There is no alternative to life,” he reminds.
