I am answering a question that has been asked many times: what is the difference between the levels of designers and how to understand your own. All of these figures vary by 10–20,000 rubles lower or higher, depending on the city and company, and in these estimates I rely on my feelings and conversations with other designers from the industry.
Let’s start from the very beginning of the career.
is a raw designer, with less than a year of experience, who has taken the right design courses, put together a portfolio and got an internship at a large company. He’s almost a junior, but lucky enough to be convinced in an interview that he’ll grow into something useful. A junior in one company can go on an internship in another, larger one. Internships can even be unpaid, but it’s still a great opportunity to get into product design, which I would not refuse. However, we do not practice such, interns in Ozone also receive salaries.
is a raw designer with about a year of experience who has been given a permanent vacancy after an internship or immediately. It needs to be driven most of the time, otherwise it will screw up. This is someone who has studied design courses, put together a portfolio, did not get into freelancing at the beginning of his career and can already solve design problems under the supervision of a mentor. You can’t just take it and become a junior in a month, this also requires months of practice. Can do what was asked for a carefully described task, but is able to drown with questions. It’s good when he asks questions, perceives feedback and strives for independent solutions. Unfortunately, he still cannot keep his word and estimate the deadlines accurately, he is inclined to overestimate his capabilities and not see the pitfalls. Juniors on average in the market earn from 50,000 to 90 000 ₽.
A person with irrelevant experience from another creative field (web design, analytics, SMM, coding) can come to juniors and upgrade in six months. This is a good option, since such juniors have already opened Figma, they understand what is happening, they are able to keep their word and it is more pleasant to work with them.
is a designer with the right experience of 2-3 years, who is most effective in a design team environment, but he needs a more experienced lead to correct bad decisions. However, he can solve most tasks autonomously. Middle is a designer who has been upgraded from junior for a year or two in the right place. It can cut down the whole scenario in one person. Middle+ is an upgraded middle, the number of edits for which becomes lower, and the number of fulfilled promises increases. However, it cannot yet be autonomous. Middles in Moscow earn an average of 100,000 to 140,000 ₽ per month. If the middle is capable, it becomes autonomous from the lead in a year or two.
is a designer with the right experience of more than three years, who has enough skills to work completely autonomously, research problems for solutions on his own, and even help other designers. Those are the ones I’m looking for. In principle, he can work effectively without a design lead, the design team knows everything about the project without five minutes of PM. He can cut down the whole interface system into one person, decompose tasks and knows how to keep deadlines, knows everything in his field. On average, in the market, a signier can claim a salary from 140,000 to 240,000 ₽, depending on how accurately he fits in a certain place, how well developed soft skills are, whether he understands his focus and whether he has a hot counter-offer.
About salaries of 300,000 ₽ for linear, non-leadership positions, you can only hear in courses on how to become a successful web designer, this is completely inadequate.
You can earn that kind of money either:
- Not in Russia, working remotely for foreign companies
- If you have a fat client base freelancing, which takes years in agencies, it is unrealistically difficult to be alone and restless
- If you have a good flight in a state-owned company and you know how to make friends
- If you teach infogypsy courses on how to become a successful web designer.
Although the latter is no longer about design.
