The American company Northrop Grumman Corp refused to compete with another corporation, Boeing Co, for a contract to develop a tanker aircraft for the US Air Force. The contract amount is $35 billion, Associated Press reports.

According to Northrop Grumman officials, the company refused to participate in the Ministry of Defense tender, as it strongly doubts its victory.

The decision is likely to result in European EADS, which owns 100% of Airbus’ shares, as well, as the European company is not sure it can compete with Boeing on its own. It was assumed that EADS would take part in the development of a tanker aircraft in partnership with Northrop Grumman.

If this happens, Boeing will have no competition for the contract, and the Pentagon will have to do it without a tender.

NASA awarded Northrop Grumman a $935 million contract to build the Habitation And Logistics Outpost (HALO) module for the Lunar Gateway lunar station. The contract also provides for the integration of the module with the power plant manufactured by Maxar Technologies.

HALO will be both a crew quarters and a research center. Pressurized living quarters will be docked to spacecraft, including NASA’s Orion spacecraft, lunar landers and supply ships. Immediately after the launch of the study at HALO, the Experimental Complex for Heliophysical Measurements of the Environment and Radiation, created at the Space Flight Center. Goddard.

HALO is based on the Cygnus cargo ship, also manufactured by Northrop Grumman, which is used to transport cargo to the International Space Station and has 15 successful missions to date. HALO will be relatively small in size, but it can be expanded with additional modules. To do this, HALO will be equipped with three docking ports.

Part of the HALO equipment was provided by the international partners of the lunar orbital station mission. For example, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has developed batteries that will power HALO until the solar panels start working, as well as during eclipses. The Canadarm3 robot arm, built by the Canadian Space Agency, will host payloads and perform other operations. The European Space Agency (ESA) will provide a communications system between the lunar surface and the orbital station. ESA will also develop a refueling module to be attached to HALO in the future and (together with JAXA) an international habitation module scheduled for launch in 2026.

A critical review of the project will take place in 2022. HALO is scheduled to launch in November 2024 on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Northrop Grumman will lead the propulsion and HALO integration and launch preparations with SpaceX, as well as provide HALO activation and validation during the flight to lunar orbit.

NASA is supposed to be back on the Moon by 2024, but that goal looks increasingly unrealistic as time goes on. However, the agency continues work on its SLS rocket and installed an Intermediate Cryogenic Propulsion Stage (ICPS) on it last week. The ICPS engine will be responsible for propelling the Orion spacecraft and its ESA-built service module to the Moon on the first uncrewed launch of the SLS.
