99% of KPMG employees in Australia agreed to a 20% pay cut

Advisory news from Australia and the USA: 99% of KPMG employees in Australia agreed to a 20% pay cut

Nearly all KPMG employees in Australia agreed to the controversial offer – earn 20% less for the same number of hours during the transition period, which is designed to mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and keep the consulting giant’s employees employed. nine0005

Amid the collapse in demand caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, KPMG has experienced a sharp drop in turnover from almost all business sectors around the world. In Australia, KPMG employs about 8,000 people across 13 offices and has a turnover of about $1.8 billion.

Regardless of the size of the turnover, companies are cutting costs, including on hiring outside consultants. KPMG has faced the suspension or cancellation of a large number of projects.

The firm’s auditing division is the most resilient to the pandemic crisis, as it works primarily with large corporations and companies listed on the stock exchanges, which are required to comply with legal requirements for annual reporting. nine0005

According to preliminary estimates, the demand for professional services in all areas in 2020 will decrease by 15% -20%. This spurred KPMG into action, as did their Big Four counterparts. During the first round, the company laid off 200 specialists.

Voluntary pay cuts

Shortly thereafter, a much larger cost reduction measure was announced – a 4-month pay cut for all employees by 20%, equivalent to a 7% reduction in annual wages. nine0005

Although employees were not required to accept the offer, the company announced that the action was necessary to “address the economic challenges that all organizations, including KPMG, will undoubtedly face in the coming months” and to preserve jobs as much as possible.

The offer was very well received by KPMG staff, almost everyone accepted the offer. Fewer than 50 employees – or 1% – rejected it. The company’s partners agreed to tougher measures – their salaries were reduced by 36% for 4 months. nine0005

More resistance elsewhere

At the same time, similar attempts by large companies to provide professional services have been less successful elsewhere, especially in countries with strict labor laws. The most illustrative example is with Aon. Last month, CEO Greg Case urged 50,000 employees around the world to agree to a temporary 20% pay cut, but despite “success” in the US and Canada, the measure has drawn widespread criticism in France, Germany and the UK. nine0005

Legal experts, trade unions and even politicians took part in the discussion, accusing Aon of putting its financial well-being before the well-being of its employees. To make matters worse, the company posted $1.5 billion in profit last year on $11 billion in global revenue.

Last year was KPMG’s 6th consecutive year of growth, with average partner revenue ranging between $500,000 and $2,000,000. So the good news for KPMG’s Australian staff is that if the impact of the pandemic turns out to be less severe than anticipated, the company will seek to pay salaries to employees first, not partners. nine0005

Deloitte Australia, which recently closed its offices for a week to cut costs, has taken a similar action, cutting wages without cutting hours. E&Y and PwC have taken a different path: they are cutting staff hours by up to 40%, but keeping salaries in line with the number of hours worked.
