Top managers went up in price – Kommersant FM – Kommersant
Strong competition and good financial performance spurred the growth of executive remuneration. In some areas, earnings increased by almost 80% compared to 2020. The rating was compiled by Forbes. The top three in terms of compensation were oil and gas companies, heavy industry and telecommunications. How has the salary of top managers changed? And what are the trends in top-level hiring? Alexander Rassokhin spoke with recruiters.

The outgoing 2021 has been an extremely successful year for the financial sector. Take, for example, the explosive growth of interest in investment products and several large IPOs. And given that the remuneration of the heads of companies in this area is often tied to income, one should not be surprised at the increase in salaries. 90,003 90,002 $1.8 million is the average earnings of a top 30 commercial bank chairman in 2021. This is almost 80% more than in 2020. The top 15 investment banks are not far behind, with an average managing director earning $1.5 million.
The peak of 2007 is still far away, but compared to 2020, remuneration has increased by 53%. The president of the Finam investment holding, Vladislav Kochetkov, told Kommersant FM that his company’s figures are more modest, but in general they look realistic: “For business, 2020 and 2021 were not bad years, if we take brokering and investment banking. In these areas, the client base grew, the commission that brokers receive from clients, respectively, income also increased. The market is competitive: entry for both commercial and investment banks is becoming an increasingly noticeable cost item. ”
In addition, competition for valuable personnel has increased in the financial sector. What cannot be said, for example, about oil and gas companies. There, the CEO’s remuneration for the year did not change so significantly – it increased by 9%. At the same time, the sphere traditionally remains in first place in terms of earnings of top managers. The CEO of a $3 billion company earns more than $3 million a year on average. The amount of remuneration in the oil and gas sector is not so strongly related to the performance of enterprises as a whole, says Roman Tyshkovsky, managing partner of Odgers Berndtson: “Oil companies have a much longer cycle of budget planning and calculation of investment programs. Therefore, the money earned in excess is spent not so much on dividends and bonus payments, but on investment programs. Plus, unlike the same banking market, which has many different players, the oil market is quite small, there are not many companies involved in it, so there is no need for a competition for talent. ”
However, in some areas, the amount of remuneration for managers has not changed or even decreased. For example, the CEO of a consumer goods company still earns just over $0.5 million a year. And the head of the agricultural holding began to earn an average of 10% less than in 2020 – $ 460 thousand. The fact is that these industries are tied to the ruble exchange rate, Stanislav Alekseev, managing partner for Russia at Transearch International, says: “If a business is aimed at consumers , buying in rubles, then even if incomes grew, they still fell in dollar terms.
It is the same with the indexation of salaries: even if they increased in rubles, they still fell in dollars.
If the company’s income is accustomed to counting in hard currency, then, accordingly, the income of top managers is indexed in hard currency.
According to Forbes, pharmaceutical companies were the least generous in remuneration to top managers this year. The CEO earns $440,000 on average, up 7% from 2020. Despite the growth of the market due to the pandemic, the peg to the ruble exchange rate played a role here too.

In Germany, as in any other country, there is more discussion about the salary of managers than about any other professional group and the reason for such discussions is usually the six-figure salaries of top managers of large companies. But if it comes down to earth, then you can see much more modest average incomes of the vast majority of managers in various industries.
Salary factors

- Region – wages in the western part of Germany are about 20% higher than in the eastern part;
- Gender – men earn 5-10% more, mainly due to the number of working hours;
- Tasks — area of responsibility based on qualifications and experience, is a significant factor reflecting wages.
