Hey there, nice to meet you 👋 We’re a new-ish startup that helps new-ish parents find daycare.

We know how hard finding good child care can be – especially for first-time parents. But really good care is what gives you the peace of mind to go back to work and feel confident that your child is getting the stimulation, socialization, and support they need to learn and grow.

So we created NeighborSchools to make this piece of parenthood a whole lot easier. We say “easier” because, let’s be honest, it’s still a big thing to figure out, but working together we can help you find some good options, understand the whole process, and choose a program you’ll feel really good about.

How’s it work?

Most first-time parents don’t know exactly what they’re looking for, so we created a simple survey that will ask you questions about your lifestyle, your daily routines, and your preferences for child care. We’ll then share 3 personalized recommendations that we think might be a good fit. We’ll also give you a timeline that maps out when we would suggest you start touring programs, choose a daycare, and pay a deposit to secure a spot. Your timeline is based on when you want to start care – so you set the pace, and you decide when you’ve found the right match.

Is there a cost?

Nope. Our daycare recommendation service is free for parents. The other half of our business is helping these small-scale daycares with software and services that handle all their administrative tasks, like online contracting, payment processing, and licensing requirements. Before NeighborSchools, services like these were only designed for large corporate child care centers, and part of our mission is to level the playing field for small, independent child care programs. That’s why we picked the name NeighborSchools – we’re all about making child care more personal, more human, and more equitable for the incredible individuals who do this work and care for our children.

How do I know if I’m ready to take the survey?

Generally, if you’re here, you’re ready. The survey lets us give you 3 recommendations to consider, but it’ll also help you better understand what factors to consider, and what questions to be asking right now. It’s simple things like where you live, your child’s date of birth, when you want to start care, and if you have any preferences around program philosophy or language of instruction. If you’re planning 6+ months ahead, it’s a great way to get started, and if you’re hoping to start daycare in the next 2-4 months, it’s definitely time to get started. Each program has a limited number of spots for each age range, so we need to know your schedule and child’s age before we can share availability. The survey covers these basics, as well as factors like drop-off and pick-up times to make sure that recommended programs fit your daily routine. Q&A with Ms. Malak

What inspires you to care for young children?

Working with children is so rewarding. My background is in sociology, and I have worked with many children over the years, some who had unique challenges and had been through a lot in life. I love being able to contribute to the well-being of children in positive and lasting ways. I am loving and patient, and I always treat kids equally, and like they are my own. Kids feel comfortable and safe in my home program and with me – and they learn so much here. The work I do is so meaningful in so many ways!

What’s a typical day like at your daycare?

My program is Montessori based – our activities are hands-on, and kids learn by doing. We follow the children’s lead in terms of what we do each day – but most days, our schedule includes a mix of pretend/imaginative play, outdoor time – including planting seeds for our garden, arts & crafts, games, and music and movement. Participating in active learning and discovery allows kids to reach their full potential – emotionally, physically, and intellectually, and it’s amazing to watch this happen every day!

What’s one thing parents should know about your program?

Every child is different and learns in a different way! I have a lot of patience, and will never, ever give up on a child. I am patient, and I know there is always a way to help someone learn on their own terms, and at their own pace. Kids here have a lot of one-on-one time, and I will try many different methods to help kids meet their goals and learn. Parents should know that will keep them informed through conferences, daily feedback, daily notes, and sending home their child’s weekly work folder. They will always know how their child is doing and be able to see their progress!

Olga Ro: the castle is Scottish, the garden is English

In 2014, she became the owner of Inchdrewer Castle in Scotland and became a Baroness. And in 2016, she bought an English estate and, inspired by an old garden, created a summer collection of women’s clothing “My English Garden” under her own brand Rohmir.

At that moment the photographer and the hairdresser began to capture Olga’s attention, and we realized that a simple interview with her would not work – there would be a lot of information, and it would be better to leave the conversation for dessert. Therefore, we first finished shooting the “heavenly” theme with helicopters, and later continued the conversation in the calm atmosphere of Mosimann’s Club.

Olga, British publications say that you and your husband bought Inchdrewer, a 16th-century Scottish castle, without even looking at it?

Inchdrewer Castle was built at the beginning of the 16th century on land that belonged to the Barclay de Tolly family. In 1746, while chasing “Handsome” Prince Charlie, who had become a popular figure in Scottish folklore, the castle was attacked by the troops of the English Duke of Cumberland. Prince Charlie is Carl Edward Stewart, pretender to the English and Scottish thrones. It was he who led the uprising of the Scots against the House of Hanover (English). On April 16, 1746, the armies of “Handsome” and the Duke of Cumberland met at the Battle of Culloden, near the castle of the Baroness Inchdrewer. The Duke won, and the battle was the last battle on the territory of the island of Great Britain. Such a story is very suitable for people with such a restless character as mine: a woman who breaks many stereotypes, overcomes routine and does not know boredom. Isn’t that very immodest about yourself? Of course, we have seen the castle before and knew its history very well: my husband is rather a man of cold mind, and spontaneity and unpredictability in our family is my prerogative.

It is said that the castle was visited by King Edward VII himself, nicknamed “Uncle of Europe” for being the uncle of several European monarchs, including Nicholas II and Wilhelm II. That is, the importance of Inchdrewer in the history of Great Britain is obvious. Tell us about the title you received along with the castle.

This is a large and cozy house with a beautiful garden, divine water lilies and water lilies bloom. This is an amazing garden! Severyanin wrote about this marvelous flower: “Our meeting is Victoria Regia: / Rarely, rarely in bloom . .. / Before and after it, life is an elegy / And hope in a dream.” In the wonderful garden that we now own, this “Victoria Regia” appeared immediately after the sensational discovery: all the wonders of garden art appeared here immediately after they were planted in the gardens of Her Royal Majesty. How could I not dedicate the collection of my fashion house to such a miracle, such a rare garden that has survived so many historical cataclysms?! Now I am responsible for this almost animated garden, as the Little Prince is responsible for his rose! In such an atmosphere, inspiration easily visits any creative person.

Yes, the collection is really very poetic. What was on your moodboard while working on it, besides “Victoria Regia”?

I will answer with lines from the magnificent K. My godmother was a professional gardener, today it’s called a landscape designer. Everything according to Raikin: a narrow specialization, mainly in rare varieties of roses and peonies. At our dacha near Moscow in Malakhovka, notorious to Moscow theater-goers and music lovers, she managed to conjure a real English garden! Moreover, this garden, by the rarity of the flowers and trees grown there, by their composition and beauty, was considered exemplary. There were often shootings for Soviet gardening magazines. Childhood memories have become the leitmotif of the new collection!

How do you work on collections?

All Rohmir collections are like stories that I tell my reader-viewer: each show for me is like a very important exam in front of a sophisticated and demanding audience, and the examiners are not only magazine editors, professionals, marketers, artists, photographers, but also clients. I create thematic collections: in the style of the twenties a la Garcon, in the style of the glamorous Hollywood of the 1930s and Mainbocher, Brigitte Bardot in the style of St. Tropez of the 50s and 60s, the collection of the ideal woman of Dali, the Scottish collection, the Vienna Imperial … For There have been many for ten years. It is a tremendous pleasure to work on a new topic, to discover the unknown, the unseen. I really consider myself a very lucky person who manages to do what he loves professionally!
