“But Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” – Luke 18:16 NIV

When Jesus was on this earth teaching, preaching, healing and performing miracles, there would be children interspersed within the crowds. On one occasion, the children were clamoring to be near Jesus. I can imagine some even tugged at His garment or tried to climb into His lap. The disciples were quick to try to dismiss the children. But Jesus called the children to Him and told His disciples to “let the little children come to Me.” He also warned them to “not hinder them” from doing so. Then He states that all of us must come to God with the same child-like faith.

At Rose of Sharon Preschool and Church, we believe that Jesus is still calling children to Himself today. We believe that children should know that God loves them and that Jesus loves them. Our teachers are all church members and are committed to showing Christian love to your children. As Pastor, I am committed to teaching your children about God’s love for them. Our intention is not to try to convert your child, but to lay a foundation in their lives so that, by the time they graduate from the preschool, your children will know that Jesus loves them.

If you do not have a church family, we would like to invite you to attend Rose of Sharon. Our staff is dedicated to reaching all age groups here at our church. Our vision at Rose of Sharon is to be “A Place Where You Can Grow.” As your child grows and matures, our prayer is that the object lessons and the memory verses they have learned will help them come to faith in Jesus. My prayer is that “Jesus Loves Me” becomes more than a song from preschool, and becomes a statement of faith.

Sleepless Seoul – Teacher’s newspaper

Get up at 6.30. At 7.00 breakfast. At 7.40, lessons begin at the Suwon School of Foreign Languages. English, art, physics, computer science, music, physical education, culture of speech. Then two classes with a teacher of your choice – a chance to further improve what is given worse. Lunch break after the fourth lesson, at this time you can play ping-pong or kick the ball.

After dinner at 18. 30, the circles start working: radio broadcasting, national instruments, orchestra and pop group “Bisang”. From 20.00 to 23.30 self-preparation of homework. 5 hours are allotted for sleep. This is a boarding school, where students enter after graduating from the secondary level. Some analogue of our college. A step in front of the university, which, after specialized intensive training, is much easier to enter.

Teachers from Russia have been giving open lessons in Suwon for several years now. They are held as part of a seminar of Russian specialists in the field of education. This specific advanced training course itself was designed to give the Russians the most complete picture of the Republic of Korea.

Even 30 years ago, the concept of “progress” was associated with the West. Today, the ringing tone of a Samsung mobile phone is heard most often around, and Hyundai sedans, combining modern sporty style, comfort and reliability, are preferred by more and more families around the world for trips. Korea is called an IT country. In the 2000s, its main export-oriented products were ships, cars, semiconductors, and household appliances. At the same time, the country is a leader in the development of “green” technologies: nature protection has been chosen as the central strategy of national development.

One of the reasons for the rapid growth of the Korean economy is the high level of education, which contributes to the development of human resources. And further. The working week in this Asian country is the longest in the world. Here they value every moment, trying to use it for the benefit and prosperity of their native state.

This is probably what puzzles the Western Epicureans. Many are able to work. Value time too. But the majority prefer to use the fruits of their efforts personally, believing that they have earned comfort and some bonuses – “gifts of life” with exorbitant work. Which ones, each determines according to their ideas about well-being.

On the Asian continent, honors and comfort are dreamed of with no less force than in Europe and America. But it is not for nothing that the symbol of Korea is the rose of Sharon, or, as it is called here, mugunhwa. Unlike most other flowers, mugunghwa is surprisingly hardy and is not afraid of either disease or insects.

The name of the plant was given taking into account the fact that “mugun” means “immortality”. Everything is reflected in this message – the attitude to one’s history, determination and perseverance. And just as a flower longs to bloom at all costs, so the people of the Land of Morning Calm strive to absorb all European achievements into their culture, while clearly realizing that it is possible not to burn out in the blinding sun only by firmly entrenching roots.

One can envy the respect for the traditions of Koreans. This careful attitude extends not only to their customs and attitudes. And the Russians who get to Korea can be moved to tears by the favorite song of local residents so often pouring from the open doors of the cafe “Sometimes it seems to me that the soldiers who did not come from the bloody fields did not die in this land once, but turned into white cranes “.

The school course of the country is designed for 12 years: 6 years in the lower grades (elementary school), 3 years in the upper grades. Usually children enter school at the age of 6-7 and graduate at 18-19years. Along with mathematics, native language, literature, history, geography, foreign languages, hieroglyphic writing, Korean children also study such a subject as “Morals”, where the basics of Confucian morality are taught – rules of conduct and social hierarchy.

Among the main advantages of the Korean school is the high authority of teachers, which is based on strict ethical rules – respect for elders, teachers in particular. It was here that the proverb was born: “Do not even step on the shadow of your teacher.” And for this reason, secondary school teachers, as a rule, have no problems maintaining order and discipline in the classroom, despite the rather large number of students in the classes (about 40). However, a clear relic of the past, according to many foreigners, is the permissibility of physical punishment in elementary school.

In high school, students themselves try to devote all their time to studying hard, because soon they will enter the university and plunge into, as Hankuk University of Foreign Languages teacher Jung Il Moon put it in his lecture, “examination hell.” With few exceptions, all students in Korea follow the same government-approved curriculum, and Korean schools have a system of constant teacher rotation.

Many parents enroll their children in all sorts of courses at private schools that promote in-depth study of various subjects. The most popular courses here are in mathematics and English. In addition, many children attend circles for learning to draw, play musical instruments, as well as sports sections.

The first academic semester runs from March 1 to August. The second one starts in September. Summer holidays cover July, August, winter holidays – January, February.

There is a rigid hierarchy of universities in Korea. The more prestigious the university, the higher the chances of graduates of these universities to find a good, well-paid job and achieve professional success.

In order to ensure equal chances for admission to the university, a national examination was introduced in the subjects of the school curriculum. This exam is taken by high school students, as well as graduates of previous years who have not prepared well enough for it before. But in general, in Korea they say: “You sleep 4 hours – you do it, 5 – you don’t.” Therefore, Koreans say that while you sleep, you dream, and when you work, it comes true.

On the day of the exam (usually in November), the government provides the most favorable conditions for high school students by special decrees, for example, increasing the number of buses compared to other days so that no one is late for the exam, the working day everywhere starts an hour later, morning flights are canceled so that the noise of flying planes does not interfere with concentrating on tasks. And parents pray for 100 days in Buddhist temples so that their offspring will have a chance for a decent life, which is possible only with a good education.

Self-respect begins with sebe

Koreans don’t like wasting time! Returning from work or school late, they do not indulge in idle bliss, but try to use their free time to communicate with their families (late visits to restaurants with children are not uncommon here) or play sports. In the yards of multi-storey buildings there are simulators. They are involved all night long: one of the inhabitants of the skyscraper will definitely go down to pump up this or that muscle group. The devices are free and available to the public, but, oddly enough, it never occurs to anyone to break them. Do they not even care that the neighbor also gets a chance to acquire perfect forms? No, for some reason they treat other people’s well-being with respect …

All Korean men serve in the military. She does not appear to them as a terrible monster capable of absorbing your physical and mental powers. On the contrary, they believe that military discipline tempers the spirit and develops important everyday skills.

And yet, the girls of this country, proud of their newfound freedom of choice, today are in no hurry to stare at the handsome countrymen. Let the world go crazy with the imposing hallyu hero Bae Yong Joon, proud Korean women determine how far from home they will find their destiny by the habit of holding chopsticks: the higher the grip, the further the betrothed lives! Oh, the ladies of the whole world dream of overseas princes, not noticing the languor of their neighbors, which, however, does not cool the ardor of real men, but makes them perform the most incredible feats for the sake of pride. Here they are sure that without yin and yang is incomplete. Even the dippers for the wedding ceremony made of two halves of a pumpkin remind that the newlyweds from now on become one.

The people of the peninsula yearn for perfection. Koreans are justifiably proud of their local artistic traditions. Refined beauty and unique bluish-green color of the celadon of the Goryeo era. White porcelain from the Joseon era. Today’s potters are also very scrupulous about the quality of their products. And it is quite real to see how a beautiful vase, just released from under his hands, the artist breaks in anger – it is not perfect! Here only the best is recognized… It is hard to live with such demands. But Koreans have a panacea for all sorts of ailments – ginseng root. It is added to cookies and sweets, marshmallows and drinks. After all, he helps with any weakness. In cases of excessive bodily or mental fatigue and to cheer up, I ate a candy with miracle grass – and that’s it. That is, you can fight and search, find and not give up, learn and create, fall in love and celebrate further.

New Year is celebrated twice in South Korea. European or American starts from Christmas. Familiar from childhood, decorated Christmas trees, Santa Clauses, they are also Santa Clauses, fuss around the counters with New Year’s cards and gifts, even snowdrifts at the sidewalks. Everyone invites each other to their place and prepares for the meeting. The hosts delight guests with delicious dishes, and the guests of the hosts with a beautiful postcard, where the traditional congratulations are written in hieroglyphs with the wishes of health and success in studies, teaching or just in business, which since ancient times was considered not a very worthy occupation for a person here.

You can have a party at one of the restaurants and sing noraban. This is a very popular entertainment, we hardly fought off the invitations of the owners of the bars, who with a significant look tried to lure them into rooms located separately from the common hall, equipped with everything necessary: a microphone with an amplifier, a monitor with video recordings of performances of some celebrities who would sing in the voice of those who is ready to hit the beat while reading the interlinear.

Some, taking advantage of the weekend, go to the mountains, which are very numerous around Seoul – rocks covered with hoarfrost or snowdrifts to the waist, wooded ridges. And if you go to the mountains of Seoraksan, then, having passed a special route, you can meet the first sunrise of the new year right at the top.

The traditional holiday in Korea is celebrated according to the lunar calendar. On the first day of the new year, Koreans commemorate their ancestors, for which they perform special rituals, including sebe – a deep bow as a sign of respect and as a New Year’s greeting. The ceremony begins early in the morning of Seollal (the first day of the new year), and all day the youth visit their elders, bowing courtesy.

On this day, it is obligatory to eat teokguk (soup with dumplings made from broken glutinous rice). In the old days, when birthdays in their modern sense were not celebrated in Korea, Seollal was the day of all the inhabitants of the country. Therefore, they still say that a person will not get older if he does not eat a plate of teokguk on New Year’s Eve.

Usually everyone tries to dress in the traditional hanbok dress, and even babies are dressed in sekton-ot, a type of clothing specially made for children with sleeves made from strips of multi-colored brocade sewn one by one. In the middle of the room, a five-knee pen-phun screen embroidered with silk in the traditional Korean style is placed. Each plane of the screen is a separate work with its own plot, but when extended, it is a single picture in conception and execution.

From the very morning they show on TV how to perform sebe correctly. For a bow, respectful children receive a gift as a reward: a sweet rice cake tteok and a small coin jeon or, depending on the degree of kinship and location of the elders, a large banknote. But there is still a saying among the people: “First make yourself, and then you will get chon.”

Winter day Seollal is not for walking, on the contrary, everyone wants to be at home with relatives. But on other days there are places to take a walk in Korea. At the mountain trout festival in January. When the Hwacheon River, chosen by this fish of the salmon family, attracts not only fans of ice fishing, but also football on ice, as well as sleigh rides. After all, this white fairy tale will end so soon, and in April the sea will part, opening the way between the islands of Chindo and Modo, revealing the road called the “Miracle of Moses”. And in May, 100,000 lotus-shaped lanterns will announce the birth of the Buddha.

Once again, September will smell of ginseng, and October will expand the horizons in Gimge. Culinary competitions will invite the Namdo walled city and the famous Icheon rice harvest, a performance of percussion drummers will lure music lovers to Seoul, and a demonstration of the martial art of taekken will bring those who dream of learning how to master weapons to Chungju. And so on until the next winter, when the elders of the family in Sollal once again wish each household health, success and happiness in the new year.

Where a crane is more valuable than a tiger

Cooking a Thai dish at home. I was taught how to fry curry and sweat chicken fillet in coconut milk by an assistant to the manager of the risk department of one of the largest Korean banks. We went to visit Kwon Ken Hoon with a teacher from a Moscow school. The entire delegation that arrived in the Land of the Morning Calm for a seminar for Russian education specialists, organized by the Korea Foundation, was divided into companies of two or three people, and small groups dispersed to the homes of those who decided to show the life of their families.

Some of the visitors were taken to the restaurant, some were offered to sit on the floor in front of a low table. This is already an anachronism, they refuse such traditions, not regretting flying at full sail to universal habits and feasts, and life, and relationships. Quick-ripening burgers that can be swallowed on the go are replacing spicy kimchi cabbage and beef stew with ribs kalbichchim.

Slow conversations at the table give way to the race for the future, which must be created today. Behind the backs of the Koreans are the imperial dynasties and the “miracle on the Hangang River”, in the stash there are a lot of electronic toys for adults and the experience of studying in a foreign land. And what remains here as the foundations that allow the Asian tiger not only to jump, but also to quietly purr after the breakthroughs made?

It is believed that the child is already a year old at the time of birth. Apparently, the countdown of life begins even before conception – at the moment of special spiritual closeness of the parents, when they only foresee what should fill their union with new meaning. In Korea, children are treated responsibly, an ordinary family is limited to one godparent. Three is a sign of family prosperity, because each of them must be learned, and this is expensive in the country …

There is no free education here, payment in public schools is about 100 dollars a month. Mandatory by law 9Everyone gets a summer education. But they don’t stop there. Only one or two people from the stream, for some reason, do not continue to gnaw at the granite of science until the 12th grade.

Programs in all public schools are the same, tuition fees are the same. To ensure an equal level of teaching in public schools, teachers are rotated; they work in the same educational institution for no more than five years. Since getting into a university is a life-changing achievement, tutoring in Korea is a huge business. Being educated is prestigious. The government includes prominent professors, it is their opinion that has significant weight. And alumni societies are very influential organizations that help with employment and other everyday problems.

The little Korean starts school at seven. According to local reckoning, he is already eight. He does not pass any entrance exams, and the selection to private schools, where, perhaps, the conditions are better, but the cost of education due to the additional payment for food of about $ 1,000, is made by lot. A student moves from elementary school to middle school and on to high school without exams and any competition. At the senior level, along with general education schools, there are so-called practical or vocational schools: agricultural, commercial, maritime.

Among the state general education schools there are also special ones for gifted children. Studying there is very difficult and very prestigious, they enter there by competition.

There is a significant difference in teacher workload between educational levels. So, in elementary school there are about 40 students per teacher, and in senior school – 14 people. At the same time, the average class size is about 30 people.

The state allocates huge amounts of money to education at all levels – the lion’s share of the budget. But the success of the system is explained not only by money. In Korea, a tradition of prestige education has developed over the centuries. Qualifying examinations for officials have been practiced since the era of the Silla kingdom. In ancient times, the mantle of the Minister of Science was decorated with a crane, and he was given honor and respect more than a tiger flaunting on a military uniform. The royal clothes themselves were embroidered with dragons, and the Firebird fluttered along the queen’s side.

Here they are generally sure that clothes say a lot about the owner, and not only about his well-being, but also about culture, inner world, place under the sun. It is believed that as the landscape is beautiful, so the clothes should be appropriate. The connection with nature is very close here, even the mother of the mythical founder of the first Korean state Tangun, according to legend, turned into a woman from a bear.

Each tree is assigned a personal number, as evidenced by the aluminum circle attached to it. Some are surrounded by a special fence, on which hangs a commemorative plaque indicating the type of tree, age and period of Korean history corresponding to it. And in construction they strictly observe the law – the architectural ensemble is located so that there is a mountain behind it, and water in front. They say that without the help of nature, a person cannot be happy. Only then will there be harmony. Only then will a person be able to command the wind and rain, finding agreement with the elements, cajoling them.

In the Buddhist symbol placed in the center of the Taegukgi national flag, the red yang symbolizes the active forces of the cosmos, while the blue yin symbolizes the passive ones. Four trigrams on the white field of the flag mean the main elements that obey the will of people, forcing them to obey themselves.

The cities of Korea are the face of the modern state. Royal palaces, pre-war houses of Japanese colonial architecture are preserved here. But more and more skyscrapers. Yeouido Island is home to the country’s tallest building, the 63-storey building of the Taehan Senmen Insurance Company, which is 249 meters high.meters, and next to the 55‑storey international shopping complex. But today’s Seoul is not only high-rises rushing into the sky, it is also residential buildings that are asking for demolition, they are painfully alien in the modern look of the capital. But they are not taken down! Municipal authorities specifically preserve them as historical objects for the younger generations.

Korea is experiencing a mass culture boom. The phenomenon is called “halu”. Television series, pop music, theatrical experiments have become a phenomenon that has conquered the world. After all, their popularity spilled out far beyond the borders of the republic. And what is amazing, no one moans about the forgotten past tune. Apparently, because the newfangled pop music is quality-oriented. And any work of a new culture pays tribute to the past, arranging it to a form more acceptable today.

In Korea, the public prevails over the private. The case of a state loan taken by the country for development is indicative. When the time came to repay the loan, millions of people lined up at the entrance to the banks. These people brought their savings, jewelry and rarities in order to free their homeland from debt. But Koreans are by no means like robots, subject to some unattainable idea of citizenship. They just highly value human relationships, saying that the more connections, the stronger you stand on the ground.
