Middle School Charter School Curriculum | SNACS

Middle School is the beginning of so much transformative growth and development. Students step up to new responsibilities and freedoms. Their minds expand and their bodies grow. Middle School education sets the stage for High School and plants seeds for future college searches and careers—and it is so important to get it right.

Unlike other charter middle schools, SNACS creates a different kind of classroom, filled with personalized, hands-on, and self-directed learning opportunities that keep middle school students actively engaged.

Middle School Curriculum


Arriving at the midpoint in K-12 curriculum means striking a balance between independence and instruction. The SNACS innovative PLAY Model (Promoting Learning and Accountability in Youth) does exactly that, exceeding Nevada state standards to set a whole new bar.

Through a mix of challenging classes and student-directed pathway projects, SNACS students practice:

Through highly interactive individual and team puzzles and projects utilizing hands-on tools and the latest technology, our students learn to develop the spirit of scientific inquiry, more mathematical minds, and see themselves as stewards of the natural world.

Reading, Writing, and Critical Thinking

Moving between fiction and nonfiction—and between literature and their own creative writing journals and published books—Middle School learners expand their vocabulary, hone their grammar, and learn to see and understand the power of words to share information, persuade others, and express themselves. (They even meet and work with professional authors and launch their own published books at Barnes and Noble Author’s Debut!)

History, Culture, and the Wider World

Middle schoolers are naturally curious about the wider world and their place within it. SNACS classes and pathway projects encourage them to draw connections between historical and current events and between other cultures and their own.

Time Management and Study Skills

Because SNACS prioritizes self-directed learning for our Middle Schoolers, they take ownership of their education at an earlier age and develop practical time management strategies and effective study skills for Middle School. Pathway projects, in particular, let students workshop their time management and achieve greater accountability.

The Arts, Performance, and Creative Self-Expression

SNACS centers the arts in our innovative academic curriculum, encouraging students to incorporate visual and performing arts into their learning process. We also provide ample opportunities for students to learn musical instruments, explore painting, sculpture, and ceramics, and participate in theatrical performances.

To learn more effectively, Middle School students need to move around and make things. That’s why SNACS sends them out of the classroom and into dynamic real-world settings on regular Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound days, Farm days. Green School in Paris

Caring for the environment and creating a healthy urban environment are the main trends in European urban planning. The authors of this project literally created a separate ecosystem in the school. An unusual building with grassy terraces and a real square on the roof appeared on the territory of the former Renault industrial zone in the Parisian district of Boulogne-Billancourt. The building houses a kindergarten, a school and a sports complex for residents of nearby houses. One of the outer walls is made of concrete blocks so that it is convenient for climbing plants to braid it, and for birds to make nests. In addition, moss and wild herbs grow on the ledges of the wall, so that over time the entire building will be covered with greenery.

The founders of the school hope that their project will serve as a successful example of greening the urban landscape and other developers will follow it.

In 1995, the Big Picture Learning School appeared in the US state of Rhode Island, in which, along with school education, children receive professional education. The first issue turned out to be an incredible success: 98% of the guys entered colleges on a scholarship. After that, Bill Gates, a well-known supporter of non-standard learning, drew the attention of the school and gave it a development grant, through which it was possible to open 65 more Big Picture Learning schools across America, as well as in Canada, Australia, Italy and the Netherlands.

Schoolchildren study in groups of 15 called councils. Each council has its own curator, who helps the children to establish the educational process and decide on their future specialty. Each student is engaged in an individual curriculum, which necessarily includes an internship. Two days a week, a teenager meets with representatives of different professions and learns the basics of their skills in order to choose the business of his life. The school does not give grades, and the program is compiled depending on the wishes of the student and his parents.

In this way, Big Picture Learning is similar to our Foxford Home School, only here mentors help the children with their studies, and a separate specialist, tutor with career guidance. He studies the interests and strengths of the child and draws up an individual program for him.

It is also possible to master a profession in school years in Russia – in the village of Novorossiysk in Altai, there is the only school in the country with a farming bias.

The project was launched in 1992, when an agricultural crisis began in the region and the school management decided that it was necessary to forge new personnel from a young age. The program was supplemented by crop production, agriculture, engineering and agroeconomics, and agricultural labor was introduced for the lower grades. After graduating from school, they will have no problems with employment: along with a diploma of general education, they will receive the rights of a tractor driver.

School for illegal immigrants in Tel Aviv

Children from 50 countries study at the Israeli school “Bialik-Rogozin”. They have different skin colors, different families, they worship different gods, but one thing unites them: they are all refugees and illegal immigrants.

Many ended up in Israel without relatives, documents and means of subsistence, some have never gone to school before, but there are no friends or foes for the employees of Bialik-Rogozin: every child here is given not only knowledge, but also food, clothes, and sometimes even hiding from the immigration police.

Canadian Alternative School ALPHA ( ALPHA Alternative school ) is an elementary school with conditions close to heaven: there are no grades, homework, strict schedules and discipline in the usual school sense . The only punishment that applies here is a temporary ban on attending favorite classes.

Of course, many people dream of studying in such a school, and there are not enough places for everyone. The leadership of “ALFA” solves this problem democratically: the right to study here is played in the lottery.

Photographer Joann McPike spends her life traveling by profession. Her family did not stay anywhere for long, so her son’s education could be a problem. But Joan found perhaps the best solution: she created a school that travels with them.

THINK Global School is an educational project for high school students. A group of students, about thirty teenagers from 15 to 18 years old from different countries, travel the world, spending each semester in a new country. During the three years of study, they manage to visit twelve countries, where they will have to master the local language, feel the culture and learn something from specialists from different industries.

There are no subject-specific lessons at this school, all classes are interdisciplinary. For example, in Botswana, the guys helped scientists from the University of South Africa to study the populations of local animals: they drove around the savannah in a truck all day long, counted animals and carried out statistical calculations.

TGS management recognizes that the main feature of the school is not travel, but the approach to learning. Here they teach not to pass tests well, but to benefit the world: to find a common language with different people, to be ready for any changes in life and always follow a dream.

The cost of studying for one person at THINK Global School is 85 thousand dollars per year, excluding airfare. This is almost 30 times more expensive than an eleventh grader’s year at Foxford Home School at the most expensive rate. And although we do not offer to count elephants in the vastness of Botswana, our lessons are also not like the usual school routine, and you can study from anywhere in the world where there is an Internet connection.

Nomadic schools of the Far North

Have you ever wondered how children of reindeer breeders are educated? Until recently, they had only one option: to spend several months at a boarding school, away from their usual nomadic life. Not surprisingly, most of the children neglected school, preferring to roam the tundra with their families.

In the 21st century, they finally have the opportunity to combine both: since 2008, nomadic schools have been operating in Yakutia – tents equipped with satellite Internet are installed at large nomad camps. In such a school, there are up to ten students and two or three teachers. The training lasts seven years. The schedule is subject to the traditional way of life of the reindeer herder: instead of physical education, there are lessons in catching deer and driving a team. Instead of technology – bone carving and other folk crafts. Children receive homework and test papers in classical school subjects and send them for verification via the Internet.

Now there are more than a dozen such schools in Yakutia, the most famous of them is “Keneleken” in the Evenk region. The leadership of the republic plans to develop this project and create mobile schools in every large tribe of reindeer herders.

New Mexico Bunker School

Abo Elementary School is a monument to the nuclear threat that hung over the world during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1962, the world was on the brink of disaster – the Soviet Union and the United States were ready to exchange nuclear strikes that could destroy both countries. President John F. Kennedy instructed municipal authorities to build infrastructure in such a way that they served as shelters for people in the event of an attack by the USSR.

In Artesia, New Mexico, this role has been assigned to an elementary school. In the event of a disaster, it was supposed to become a shelter for 2,160 people. The building is located underground, only a small playground protrudes to the surface. The school has three exits, each protected by a steel door weighing 800 kilograms. Thanks to this and other design features, the structure is able to withstand a 20-megaton explosion. Behind the doors are disinfection chambers with anti-radiation showers. The building has a diesel power plant, autonomous ventilation, stocks of food, water, medicines and even a small morgue.

Fortunately, none of this came in handy. The Abo school worked until 1995, after which it was closed due to too expensive maintenance. Now there is a warehouse there, and a new school, Eco, has been built next door, where nothing reminds of the terrible conflict.

In the city of Ichnia, Chernihiv region of Ukraine, there is a school with a unique health program, the purpose of which is to raise children who will never get sick. To do this, the school uses a special methodology.

The creators of the program are confident that the learning material is better absorbed in motion. Therefore, at least five physical education minutes are held in each lesson. When learning the multiplication table, children jump. The teacher, before asking a question, throws a ball to the student – to increase concentration. To form the correct posture for schoolchildren, bags of iodized salt are placed on their heads, and in order to avoid seasonal diseases, each student wears a container of kinder surprise with garlic around his neck. Agora Sant Cugat International School for children from 3 to 18 years old in Spain

Agora Sant Cugat International School is an international private day school, which is in the top 10 best schools in Spain according to El Mundo newspaper. The school has moved up four positions compared to 2019year, taking 3rd place today.

The first school campus was established in 1972. It was the Agora Patufet school for children aged 0 to 6, located in the center of Sant Cugat del Vallès. Thanks to its methodology, as well as trilingual teaching, it has become a benchmark for children’s schools in the area.

In 1989, the second campus project, Agora Sant Cugat Day School, began. Over the years, she has received international recognition, as evidenced by the excellent academic and personal results achieved by her students, as well as numerous awards, including the first prize in the Catalan Audiovisual Council’s “The CAC at school” competition and the Renault Road Safety Award.

Agora Sant Cugat is part of the international Globeducate group, which cooperates with more than 50 schools in 10 countries, employing more than 2,500 teachers and teaching more than 25,000 students. The school brings up respect for other cultures and religions, tolerance for different points of view, the ability to build a dialogue. The Globeducate Group organizes a number of international events throughout the academic year, including conferences, academic, artistic or athletic competitions, and an international music festival.
