First Presbyterian Church CDC | 120 West Hargett Street | Raleigh, NC  27601 | 919-821-1845

The First Presbyterian Church Child Development Center provides a stimulating and nurturing learning environment where the developmental needs of each child are met through play, creative learning, and spiritual growth in a Christian setting.

We strive to help every child grow as an individual while providing a warm and loving environment that still meets the highest standards of care.

First Presbyterian Church Child Development Center is an outreach ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Raleigh. The center was established because of the church’s desire to offer excellent care for all children. The purpose of the Child Development Center is to provide working parents in the community with a child care program for infants through 5-year-olds that embodies developmental experiences in keeping with the highest quality of early childhood education.

We are a private center, licensed by the state of North Carolina, with school policies set by an advisory Board that is composed of church members from committees of the church including: Personnel, Budget and Finance, Property and Insurance, Christian Education and a member-at-large.

As an agency of the First Presbyterian Church, the Center provides a Christian atmosphere where children can grow socially, physically, intellectually and spiritually and where attention will be given to the individual needs of each child. Each child is seen as a unique individual created by God and is encouraged to develop an awareness and love of God. We strive to help every child grow as an individual while providing a warm and loving environment that still meets the highest standards of care. Each child shall have the freedom to express, experience and develop his/her own self-concept, character and potential at his/her own pace in a happy, informal atmosphere.

How do I enroll?

Enrollment is open to any child, ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. When enrollment is full, a waiting list is maintained, and prospective parents are encouraged to schedule a tour and submit a Waiting List Form.

How many students attend?

There are 6 classrooms and 62 children enrolled. The center is large enough to expand your child’s horizons, but still small enough to feel like family! There are a spectrum of opportunities without the institutional feel that you may experience at larger centers. Our faculty knows parents, grandparents, and siblings by name and face.

Infants: 8 children, 2 full-time teachers
Waddlers: 8 children, 2 full-time teachers
Toddlers: 10 children, 2 full-time teachers
Twos: 12 children, 2 full-time teachers
Threes: 12 children, 2 full-time teachers
Fours: 12 children, 2 full-time teachers

What kind of curriculum do you use?

Our curriculum is designed to provide the Christian foundation in which children can develop. With a structured day and a team of experienced educators, every opportunity will be provided for a child to feel secure as they discover the world around them.

Children will experience a variety of rotating materials and experiences. Our daily activities are designed to provide a balance of experiences and are based on weekly themes and the developmental goals that we have set for each age group.

Children learn through direct participation with the environment. They develop at their own pace though self-directed play: choosing their own areas for learning by using available materials. Learning is an active process for young children; therefore, instruction provides for active exploration, concrete experiences in a rich environment, and many language experiences to foster learning.

We believe in giving a child new challenges and experiences when they are ready to successfully understand and complete them while maintaining a healthy self-esteem. When early education is guided by their own natural ambition, children learn to love learning for all of life.

Who is on your staff?

Our faculty consists of 14 full-time teachers, and four support staff members who are dedicated to providing quality care for your child and allow them to develop academic skills and readiness. Each faculty member has a genuine love of children and respect for individual differences.

In addition, our faculty has access to the most current research and material related to early childhood development We have Parent volunteers are encouraged.

Parent volunteers are always welcome. This allows your children to have more frequent, meaningful interactions with adults, and equips our teachers to provide the highest quality of care.

All of the teachers at the First Pres Child Development Center have at least earned the NC Early Childhood Credential. More than 75% of our staff are degreed teachers. We also encourage all remaining staff to further their education and work toward achieving degrees, with course work paid by the CDC with assistance from the NC TEACH Scholarship Program.

Staff attend the NCAEYC (North Carolina Association for the Education of Young Children) Conference yearly to get up-to-date information and ideas to enrich our curriculum, and to network with others in our field.

All of our teachers are CPR/First Aid certified.

Should I pack meals?

We provide our children with a healthy, morning breakfast, hot lunches and an afternoon snack daily for any children who are eating solid foods. An outside provider caters our daily lunch. Our staff prepares breakfast and snacks. We feature a nut-free menu. Should your family need additional support for dietary restrictions, please speak to the Administration during the enrollment process.

Summer Adagio in Charlotte | Russian Washington Baltimore

Tatyana Tulina, President of the Russian-American Association of Culture and Business, plays a big role in uniting our compatriots from Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union in Charlotte. She lives in the largest city in the state of North Carolina, Charlotte, where the Russian-speaking population is approximately 0.15% of the total population of the state.

Tatyana Tulina is also a member of the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots in the USA and is closely connected in her work with all public organizations in the field of culture, as well as with famous artists and musicians. She is the organizer of cultural events aimed at preserving Russian culture in America. Organizing cultural events in Missouri since 2007, and for the last three years in North Carolina, she has organized over 50 events, including the largest Russian Art Gala Festival in the Midwest with the support of the Russian Consulate in Seattle, Russian Community Day and Slavic Maslenitsa in Charlotte in collaboration with the Caroline Opera and many other sponsors. nine0003

Tatiana Tulina and Lidiya Mishchenko – organizers of events in Charlotte

Tatiana has great organizational skills, versatile talents and great creative potential. She graduated from the university in Sevastopol, where she lived before coming to America, then continued her studies at the University of Minnesota, where she met her love Tim Thulin and married him. In addition to her university education, Tatiana also has a professional musical education, she is the owner of a magnificent soprano and sings with the Caroline Opera in Charlotte. nine0003

In 2012, Tatyana hosted the Russian Community Day in Charlotte, which not by chance coincided with the premiere of Tchaikovsky’s opera Eugene Onegin at the Opera House. Director of the Carolina Opera and Principal Conductor James Meena took part in this joint spring arts festival. According to James, everyone benefited from this joint event, and, as he noted, “it is wonderful that Russians and Americans have plunged into the cultural life of Charlotte together. ” The festival was held at the Levin Museum of the New South, where all day long 1,500 festival participants could enjoy classical and Russian folk music, dance, buy colorful souvenirs, and taste Russian cuisine. nine0003

In 2013 Tatiana performed with great success at the Slavic Festival in Oregon, where she co-hosted the festival and performed Russian songs. In the same year, she organized and conducted a series of educational musical programs “Say a Word About Russian Romance”, dedicated to this unique musical genre, which is one of the hallmarks of the Russian cultural tradition.

Tatyana has recently lived in Charlotte, only 3 years old, but she is already known and loved by the entire Russian-speaking community, families come to her events, as they are interesting for everyone – both children and adults. For the second year in a row, on a large scale, she holds the spring Maslenitsa here in Charlotte. Such festivals, according to Tatyana, are very important, as they bring our peoples together and draw attention to Russian culture and history. nine0003

Shrovetide festival in Charlotte, center Tatyana Tulina and Sergei Kislyak, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to America

This year, on the eve of Maslenitsa, Tatiana organized the visit to Charlotte of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the United States Sergey Ivanovich Kislyak, who during the visit gave a high assessment of Charlotte as a region with high business potential for cooperation with Russia. During this visit, Mr. Ambassador also met with the director of the Carolina Opera, James Mina, and discussed with him the issues of cooperation between the opera houses of Russia and the United States, in particular, the production of Russian opera in Charlotte in 2016. Sergei Ivanovich, a great connoisseur of opera and classical music, recommended choosing The Tsar’s Bride or Iolanthe, little-known in America, but very musical and melodic Russian operas. nine0003

This summer Tatiana also organized an evening called “Summer Adagio & Dancing” in Charlotte. For this event, she chose the form of a salon concert and warm family communication. This evening was held in a large and cozy local country club, where there is a concert hall and a place for a disco. The evening was hosted by Tatyana herself – she introduced sponsors and guests, and also congratulated those who had anniversaries, birthdays and other important dates in the family among those gathered.

Then there was a concert performed by the “International Trio” from Washington. This group was organized two years ago and quickly won success with the public thanks to the great talent of all its members – guitarist Sergei Krichenko (America), pianist Anna Nizhegorodtseva (Russia) and violinist Enrique Reinos (Mexico). nine0003

The ensemble’s repertoire includes a wide range of classical works, as well as author’s works, specially written by the head of the ensemble Sergei Krichenko for Anna and Enrique. Both of these great musicians are studying at the Catholic University of Washington, where they are working towards a doctorate in music. They are very popular performers, participants and winners of international music festivals and competitions, and also conduct their concert activities both in America and abroad. nine0003

The concert began with Sergei Krichenko’s arrangement of Mussorgsky’s most famous work, Pictures at an Exhibition, arranged specifically for this group of musicians. Mussorgsky immediately tuned the concerto to the highest level of both performance and perception. “For me, the concert was a breeze,” notes the guest of the evening, Natalia Stassenko. “Musicians are all world-class,” Lyudmila Weinstein echoes her. “Great level, great acting – real artists,” sum up Igor and Lilia Vakhovsky, Erik and Tatyana Zalinov. In a word, the audience liked the concert very much. The audience was very impressed by the violin playing of Enrique Reinos, especially his virtuoso performance of the solo violin sonata specially written by Sergey Krichenko for this performance. The audience was also captivated by the temperamentally performed piano etude by Rachmaninov by Anna Nizhegorodtseva and, of course, the virtuoso guitar playing by Sergei Krichenko. nine0003

International Trio from Washington – Sergey Krichenko (USA), Anna Nizhegorodtseva (Russia), Enrique Reinosa (Mexico) after the concert

The second part of the concert was less formal, where the audience could dance to the music and relax. In this friendly atmosphere, local guitarist Vadim Kolpakov joined the musicians, and Tatyana unexpectedly sang and performed a jazz composition to the accompaniment of the “Trio from Washington” – it turned out just great! And then there was a disco with a good selection of melodies for every taste, so everyone danced until late at night. To spend such a friendly warm evening Tatyana was helped by her like-minded people and invaluable assistants – Lydia and Sergey Mishchenko, Lena Rekeri. Tatyana’s husband Tim Tulin and son Anton helped install the equipment and voice the musicians, and daughter Natasha made a selection of photos of the musicians for a slide show, which greatly enlivened the concert. And, of course, special thanks must be expressed to the sponsors of the event, Lyudmila and Yuri Weinstein, Nonna Belova, Nikolai Stassenko, Ashot and Irina Shirazyan, Pavel’s Jewelry Repairs & Loans. nine0003

Tatyana Tulina and Sergey Krichenko met at the Russian Embassy in Washington on Russia Day last year, then both participated in the Oregon Slavic Festival, where their professional and musical ties began. Tatyana was then greatly impressed by Sergey’s performance, especially his unique technique of playing with two hands on the fretboard – he performed Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances in his own arrangement, and she had long dreamed of introducing Sergey’s work to her audience. Finally, the long-awaited meeting took place! nine0003

Another project completed, looking forward to new projects and interesting meetings in Charlotte!

December 19 at 21:20 on the TV channel “Russia” – the premiere of the serial detective story “The Lady with the Dog”. The main roles in the film are played by Elena Yakovleva, Alexander Baluev, Sergey Peregudov, Irina Tarannik, Alexander Dzyuba and others.

Agata Denisovna Marfina (Elena Yakovleva), a pensioner and former mathematics teacher, after her husband’s death, moves to an elite village with her daughter Tatyana (Irina Tarannik) and her husband Viktor (Alexander Dzyuba). The daughter, hoping that her grandmother will take care of raising her grandchildren, tries to make her comfortable, but the case changes everything. Agata Denisovna becomes an accidental witness to a mysterious murder and, together with her beloved dog Siri, undertakes to investigate it. And her former student, local investigator Eduard Sviridov (Sergey Peregudov) and a new neighbor, retired judge Igor Kholodov (Alexander Baluev), help her. A successfully solved case not only brings new acquaintances together, but also opens the way for the main character to even more intricate crimes. In addition to catching criminals, the energetic and insightful Agatha has many more important things to do: sort out her daughter’s complicated family life, improve relations with her grandchildren, and, perhaps, find new love herself. nine0003

“Of course, working with such great artists as Elena Yakovleva and Alexander Baluev is a great fortune,” Miroslav Malich, director of the film, admits. We tried to make a good, exciting series that you want to watch until the end. I really hope that the audience will appreciate our work.” nine0003

Frame from the series “The Lady with the Dog”

“I like the detective genre, I know that the audience always watches such stories with interest, especially when the detective story is ironic – here is both food for thought, and the opportunity to relax and have fun,” Elena Yakovleva, the lead actress, notes. “Our project was filmed entirely in Novorossiysk, and another city is always an opportunity to see the country, to visit new places. Although it was not easy to combine shooting with performances in Moscow. My character Agata Denisovna was molded on the set – there was such a lively creative process. Something in her was originally in the script , but I brought something, interacting with partners, looking for some interesting reactions and details. nine0003

Another main role in the series is played by a border collie named Siri, a true friend and partner of Agata Denisovna. It was not easy to find a worthy artist. The film crew reviewed a large number of applicants.

Frame from the series “The Lady with the Dog”

“We were looking for a dog for a long time. Elena Yakovleva also took an active part in the casting. Lena is a big animal lover, it was clear that she really liked this process. It was important for us that her future partner had certain qualities: intelligence, good character and beautiful appearance. Siri fit perfectly. Despite the fact that it was her debut in the cinema, she coped brilliantly! All the commands were grasped on the fly and turned out to be very friendly and affectionate. By the way, she and Lena became real friends not only in the frame, but also on the set.
