The world’s largest pumpkin in New York
It just so happens that the pumpkin always symbolizes autumn. Maybe this is due to its color, which matches the color of autumn leaves, maybe because the pumpkin ripens by autumn … I don’t know. But the fact remains that traditionally New York City is decked out in autumn with pumpkins of all colors and sizes. There are over 800 different varieties of pumpkin in total, and only 200 of them are edible. In addition to orange, there are blue, green and white pumpkins, spotted, striped, round, oval, smooth, pimply, large, small and huge.
Mexico is considered the birthplace of the pumpkin. I have no idea where the Russian word “pumpkin” comes from. But about such a cute word “pumpkin” I read that it came from “pepon” which means “big watermelon”. By port, the French changed this word into “pompon”, then the British also contributed and reshaped popmon into “Pumpion”, and in the end the American colonists intervened in the process of word formation and we already know the word pumpkin. Pumpkins were used by the Indians – they ate them, and food was poured into them – for example, they poured milk.
But an interesting Irish legend is connected with the tradition of carving all sorts of terrible faces from a pumpkin.
Irish Jack, nicknamed Stingy Jack, once invited the Devil to drink with him. But Jack, well, did not want to pay for the drink at all and, on reflection, he suggested that the Devil turn into a gold coin, and then Jack would buy a drink, and then the Devil would turn back into himself. Damn did it. But, when he saw the coin, Miserly Jack decided that it was not worth it to prescribe gold, and put it in his pocket, where the silver cross lay, which supposedly prevented the Devil from returning back to his appearance. The devil begged Jack for freedom, promising that he would not annoy Jack for a whole year.
After some time, the story with the stupid Devil repeated, only this time Jack asked him to climb a tree and get an apple, and, so that the devil would not cry, he carved a cross on the tree … only this time Jack agreed with the Devil , then not only will he not interfere with him, but even after Jack’s death he will not demand his soul … Jack died, and naturally they did not take him to heaven, for his deceptions and stinginess, and the offended devil did not let him go to Hell. And so poor Jack was sent into the Darkness and the only light in the form of a burning piece of coal.
Upper West Side |
In order to carry this coal and not burn his hands, Jack dug holes in the pumpkin and carried this fire, wandering in the Darkness … The Irish began to call this ghost “Jack of the Lantern”, and then this name turned into “Jack O’Lantern”.
And so in Ireland and England, people began to carve scary faces out of pumpkins, put candles inside and put them on the threshold to drive away the ghost of Miserly Jack from the house. And they brought this tradition with them to the New World.
And now, as soon as autumn begins, pumpkins appear everywhere.
