Brooklyn, also known as King’s County, is the most populated of the New York City boroughs as well as being the most populous county in the state.
At one time a stopping point for thousands of immigrants, Brooklyn is now an amazingly diverse mix of cultures and races. The public schools in Brooklyn are part of the New York City Department of Education, the most influential school system in the United States. - Constance Billard – Gossip Girl
Constance Billard is an elite private school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where Serena and Blair not only received a brilliant education, but also participated in all sorts of intrigues, made and broke rules, found friends and love for life. Many people would like to go to this school, not only because all the students looked like supermodels, but also because after graduation the doors of the Ivy League universities opened for everyone. Once at Constance Billard, students prepared for university in advance and spent their days on campus with their future professors. At the same time, they also managed to conquer New York – a dream!
- Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – Harry Potter
Who among us has not dreamed (and, let’s be honest, still dreams) of receiving the coveted letter from Hogwarts? After all, this school has everything: attentive and caring teachers, studying in a huge castle (with the Forbidden Forest nearby!), an unusual interior, talking portraits, trolls in the dungeon, three-headed dogs guarding a closed hatch – and, of course, such an amazing trifle, like magic! And the division of the school into four faculties not only adds to the spirit of rivalry at Quidditch matches, but also allows you to make friends from all over the British wizarding community.
- Riverdale High – Riverdale
If you turn a blind eye to mysterious crimes, mysterious villains, and warring gang wars, Riverdale School can be very attractive! It has a cheerleading team, a school choir, a talented student pop group called the Josie and Pussy Cats, a student newspaper, and a variety of sports such as football and wrestling. Extracurricular activities are available to everyone and so extensive that if you could graduate from high school without facing everything listed in the first sentence, then the admissions office of any college would be delighted with you!
- Rydell School – Grease
In addition to catchy melodies and dances, the Rydell school has its own special charm. Sandy and Danny, the protagonists of the musical film Grease, spend their summers at beach parties and movie nights. The local women’s group, the Lady in Pink, is having fun at a pajama party as members of the school’s T-Birds gang prepare to race down the coast in the dying sun.
School dances, rallies, milkshakes on dates – Rydell is a great option for those who dream of getting into a typical American school!
- St. Trinian’s School – Classmates
Although St. Trinian’s is an all-female boarding school for “difficult” teenagers in need of behavior modification, it is more like an elite private boarding school in spirit! Six films were made about this school from 1954 to 2007, so it has long established itself. While teachers may gamble and turn a blind eye to the chaos in the school hallways, the need to fight for school pride brings everyone together. If you’re attracted to a strong school spirit and are ready to stand up for the school’s face (perhaps by playing lacrosse), then dream of going there!
- William McKinley School – Choir
Teachers such as Will Schuester, Sue Sylvester and Sheldon Beist are incentive enough to want to get into Glee school. But the real devotion of this school to art makes one really dream of entering there.
Daily rehearsals, trips to competitions all over the country – each student is given the opportunity to shine on stage and subsequently build a dizzying career!
- Sunnydale High School – Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Of course, this school may lose a few points due to the attacks of demons and vampires, but if you have a teacher who will definitely teach the slayer to fight them, you may not even notice that something is wrong! And it’s better not to think that some selective demons hunt only for the best students or only participants in the talent contest … After all, the vampires of this show even go over to the side of good! So this school will definitely be very interesting (especially on the eve of Halloween).
- New Trier School – Breakfast Club
Yes, subject to bad behavior, in this school it is quite possible to earn such a punishment as being late after school for the whole Saturday. But what other opportunity would be given to guys from completely different backgrounds to realize that they are facing similar problems? Friendship in the Breakfast Club is the hallmark of the school.
These guys can listen to each other, forgetting about any stereotypes. And it is precisely such Sabbath punishments that help many to change for the better.
- Roundview College – Skins
Not exactly the place to show parents as an example – Roundview College from the series “Skins”, which is attended by British teenagers for whom no rules are written. They don’t wear school uniforms, talk to teachers like best friends, don’t come home at night, and run away from exams. But they are always ready to help each other and follow their dreams.
- High School East – High School Musical
The last item is the school from the hit movie High School Musical. While we cannot guarantee that her students will spontaneously start singing during class or freestyle during basketball practice, this school is not fictional and is located in Salt Lake City. Students have access to five national parks, a vibrant city, and a booming crafting industry (however, unfortunately, Zac Efron doesn’t study with them).
US secondary education
The American system of secondary education is considered one of the best in the world, because its development is directly related to the history and political system of the country, where the acquisition of practical knowledge and needs was in the first place, unlike European schools with a significant influence of the church.
Features of secondary education in the USA
Schools in the USA are focused on obtaining individual and independent skills that will be useful to them in adulthood. Also, in US schools, the cognitive and creative activities of students are developing.
School education in this country consists of several structures:
- elementary school in the USA – 5 grades, from 6 to 11 years old
- high school in the USA – grades 6-12, from 11 to 18 years old, and it is also divided into middle and high grades
In middle and high school in the United States for students, in addition to studying such compulsory subjects as English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography, art, there are also subjects to choose from – journalism, photography, painting and others that can vary by state.
The last stage of secondary education in the US, high school, begins in ninth and ends in twelfth grade. At this stage, students are given more freedom and there are minimum requirements that must be met in order to receive a US high school diploma. Typically, a student needs to earn from 20 to 24 credits in compulsory and elective disciplines during their studies in high school, from the ninth to twelfth grades. Compulsory subjects for which credits are awarded are biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, English, history, political science, economics, national history, physical education, health and art.
In addition, students in the eleventh and twelfth grades can take several subjects of increased difficulty, which are studied at a higher level, corresponding to the level of higher education. When entering a university or college, the examination grade in these subjects is taken into account, its positive value gives a significant advantage to applicants. This program allows teenagers to study in depth the subjects that are most interesting and important to them, whether it is Latin or additional courses in physics.
US schools also provide for the thirteenth grade, where the subjects of future specialization at the university are studied in depth; after graduation, the graduate is enrolled in the second year of the university.
The grading system differs from that in Ukraine, in American schools the letter designation of grades is used: “A”, “B”, “C”, “D” and “F”, where traditionally “A” is considered the best grade, and “F “- the worst.
The US High School Diploma is of international importance and is awarded upon completion of all twelve grades.
Schools in the USA pay great attention to extra-curricular life, many of them have their own stables, swimming pools, sports grounds for practicing various sports.
Types of schools in the USA
As in most other countries, schools in America are divided into public and private, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages. The main advantage of public schools is the low cost of education, often 2-3 times lower than in private schools.
At the same time, private US schools place higher demands on students and they are focused on enrolling in prestigious universities, and their diploma makes it possible to enter any university in the world. In addition, private schools in the United States have the best equipment, both the educational institution itself and the sports grounds, and individual curricula provide for several levels of learning difficulties.
Not always a public school in the US is a poor, old building with a large number of students in the classroom, because all schools are different from each other and it is quite possible to find a decent public school with a high level of teaching.
In addition to the division of schools in the United States into public and private schools, there is a division of schools according to the form of residence:
- day schools, after classes in which children return home;
- boarding schools with full and part-time accommodation, where students have the opportunity to go home on weekends and holidays.
Features of American schools
The academic year in them consists of two semesters, the duration of classes is 5-6 hours. The beginning and end of the academic year are set independently by the administration of each district, the difference in its start and end dates between districts can reach one month.
Schools here play a special role in the physical development of students, where they can play football, basketball, tennis, golf, swimming and other sports, as well as various sports competitions between schools and districts.
The main values in local schools are independence, responsibility, discipline, individuality and creativity.
