Starting school is a pivotal moment in youth. A good school can be a determining factor in a child’s growth and future prospects. The common challenge for many parents is to find the best school that fit their children. If you choose the public route, living in a public school district is required. However, even if the private is the right choice for you, in recent years many parents decide to live close by private school areas to save time and build their community nearby schools.

The system of secondary education in the USA

Sending a child to study in the USA in a general educational institution is becoming more and more popular among Russians. Why is it worth starting with secondary education? This is a great option for those who want to further enroll in a prestigious American university and successfully graduate from it. For foreign students, studying in general education schools in America will provide an opportunity to adapt as much as possible to the current system of education, which differs significantly from the Russian one. Students here are required not only good academic performance, but also the development of an active life position. Classes last all day, they are aimed not only at studying school disciplines, but also at educating a personality, developing leadership qualities in an emerging person.

Children are taught from an early age how to properly organize their own time in order to maximize their potential. The goal of the American education system is to give children not so much basic knowledge as an algorithm for mastering them. Schoolchildren are taught to think independently, find the required information and analyze it. Graduates who have undergone such training go into independent life more prepared.

How the US secondary education system is organized

The organization of education in US schools is somewhat similar to Russian, but there are many fundamental differences. The American general education system includes: zero grade, elementary, middle and high schools.

Pre-school, or grade 0, prepares children for school. Pre-school education in this country is not a compulsory stage. Approximately 60% of children in the United States pass it or attend kindergarten (kindergarten).

Children start at the age of six in elementary school in the United States. This stage of education ends when the child turns 11-12 years old (in different states – from 1st to 5th or 6th grade). In primary school, lessons in all disciplines are taught by one teacher, but the basics of fine arts, music and physical education are taught by other teachers – 1-2 times a week. At the initial stage, children are taught a number of academic disciplines, including arithmetic and even the basics of algebra. Children are taught to read and write, with special emphasis on learning the rules of spelling and increasing vocabulary. Little attention is paid to the natural and social sciences at this stage. Their teaching is often limited to ordinary local history. Given the age of the students, learning in elementary school often takes place in the form of games. Children attend excursions, participate in art and various creative projects.

Secondary school takes over when children are 11-14 years old. These are grades 5-8. At this stage, everything is serious: each subject is taught by a separate teacher. Among the compulsory disciplines are mathematics, English, social and natural sciences, physical education. In addition to the compulsory subjects, children choose one or a couple of additional subjects. It can be languages, technologies, art.

High school – the final stage of secondary education. Children pass it at the age of 14-18, from 9to 12th grade. The list of subjects required to be studied at this stage includes the same disciplines as at the previous stage of education, but the choice of additional subjects for in-depth study provided to students is significantly expanding.

Each student is required to pass a minimum approved by the Council of the educational institution. After graduation, graduates are awarded diplomas confirming their secondary education. To receive such a diploma, you must pass an exam of the established type. There are two of them: SAT I and SAT II. The first one is much easier. It is chosen by those who intend to continue their education in a college or university with a low rating. The SAT II exam is much more difficult to pass, but it is necessary if the graduate plans to enter a good university that ranks high in the ranking of higher educational institutions in the country.

Types of schools in the USA

You can get a secondary education in this country in educational institutions of various types. The most widespread are:

• Public schools – about 85% of children in all states go through them. They exist with funds coming from the budget of the school district, that is, they are funded by the state. Children who live in the district adjacent to educational institutions study here. The quality of education in public schools varies. It is determined using tests that are in the public domain. Public schools in the United States teach programs that enable foreign students to receive a secondary education along with American students. After graduating from a public school, a foreigner receives the same certificate as any young US citizen. Possession of such a certificate, or diploma, opens the way to higher education and allows you to enter the university.
• Schools of public organizations. In fact, these are the same private educational institutions, but working under the auspices of various associations of a public or religious nature. They can be specialized or charter. The first ones provide in-depth knowledge of a narrow specialization, for example, in the field of mathematics or art. They are admitted to such educational institutions only after passing difficult preliminary exams. Charter-type educational institutions are usually created on the basis of public ones. They are issued a license that allows them to educate children, manage the funds allocated to the school, etc. They are required to guarantee the provision of high quality educational services.
• Day Schools – private day schools. Studying in them is prestigious, as in private boarding schools. The main difference between them is that in day schools, students spend less time on campus. Here they attend lessons and extracurricular activities, the rest of the time they spend at home. Foreign students are accommodated in a host family. The cost of education in private schools is quite high. Far from every American can afford to pay for it for their child; no more than 5% of American students study in educational institutions of this type. By paying for a private school, every parent can provide their child with the best opportunity to start in life. Daytime private schools are distinguished by a wide range of academic disciplines, a high level of teaching, and a solid material base. It uses an individual approach to teaching each student.
• Boarding Schools – private boarding schools. These are elite educational institutions with round-the-clock stay of pupils on the school territory, providing exclusive conditions for obtaining an excellent store of knowledge. In addition to the compulsory curricula that every student must master, schools give students the opportunity to engage in science, various types of art, and realize themselves in sports. They have a good material base, a well-maintained autonomous territory, on which there are educational buildings and laboratories, gyms and libraries, stadiums and swimming pools. Many schools in America are available for Russian children.

Differences in private American schools

In the US, private schools account for about 10% of the total number of educational institutions. In them, as well as in state educational institutions, training of foreign students is allowed. This is used by Russian parents who send their children to study overseas. Persons who are not citizens of the country cannot receive free secondary education. And here students from Russia face the problem of choosing whether to go to a public or private educational institution. The cost of studying in public schools is much cheaper, but the quality of education is not always at its best. In addition, they have some immigration restrictions. For example, foreign students, including Russian students, are allowed to participate in the exchange program and study at a public school – but the period of study is limited to one year. Similar programs are available to young people aged 15-18. The rating of public schools often leaves much to be desired, and this is very important when entering a university. The fact is that even good grades in an average public school are quoted worse than average ones, but earned in a prestigious private institution. But many schoolchildren from Russia just go to study in the United States in order to level the difference in the educational programs of the two countries and have the opportunity to continue their education at an American university. In this case, the private school outperforms the public one. Experts from the US Department of Education acknowledge that the level of knowledge received by students in private schools is much higher than that provided in public educational institutions.

If a child successfully graduates from an American boarding school, this practically guarantees his admission to the selected leading university in the country and clearly explains the reason that even with a considerable cost of education in private schools, the competition in them remains consistently high.

Another important difference is that in private institutions there are much fewer students in each class than in public ones. A teacher working with ten to fifteen students has the opportunity to devote a lot of time to each. At the same time, in private schools, the concept of “school class” in the sense that Russians put into it is practically absent. Any student independently determines for himself a set of necessary disciplines and draws up an individual schedule, studying each subject in a new team.

Pupils of private schools are given greater freedom of choice of disciplines, but there are also subjects that are required to be studied. These include: mathematics, some social and natural sciences, English and computer literacy. The remaining disciplines are chosen by the student at will, taking into account which path he is going to follow in the future. Much attention is paid to the physical education of schoolchildren – physical education is also a compulsory subject. But in high school, physical education is no longer just health lessons: children systematically and seriously engage in a certain sport. And if they achieve noticeable success, then this is a plus in their reputational piggy bank and has a beneficial effect not only on their studies, but also on future enrollment in a university.

In addition, each boarding school provides children with more opportunities than in a public school to play music, try themselves in different types of art, and organize interesting leisure activities. High school students can study in depth selected subjects in special courses. Their program is similar to the curriculum given in the first year of university. If the student successfully completes such a course, then the discipline is most likely to be credited to him at the university.

US Private Schools by Boarding Type

Schools of this type are extremely popular – despite the high cost of education, which in such a residential school is about $ 55,000 annually. The competition for admission to such institutions is comparable to the competition of the world-famous Harvard or Yale. The explanation for this is simple – studying at boarding schools increases the chances of graduates for further education at a prestigious university or college, without a diploma from which it is difficult to build a successful career in America.

Statistics confirm that graduates of such educational institutions in almost 100% of cases enter universities that occupy high lines in the US educational rankings. It is also important that foreign students who are not fluent enough in English get the opportunity to study the language as part of the curriculum. This allows you to increase the level of proficiency in a short time. In addition, the number of foreign students studying in boarding schools often does not exceed 15% of the total number of students, which allows them to get excellent language practice. All this makes residential schools in America the most attractive and promising option for secondary education for Russian students.

Features of boarding schools

Education in this type of American school takes place in a democratic atmosphere. The student feels more free here than a student of traditional boarding schools in the UK. There is no single curriculum sent from above by the federal authorities in the United States. Educational standards are established in each state, and they are advisory, not mandatory. Any educational institution may, at its discretion, change the recommended standard.

Schools in America have five-day classes, the first lesson starts at 7:30 or 8:00. The rating system here is 100 points. In the course, the designation of marks with letters is also in use: for example, A + means the highest score, and the letter F evaluates the unsatisfactory knowledge demonstrated by the student.

Schools also have a system of personal educational loans. A student, for example, cannot complete one stage of study and move on to the next if he does not earn the required number of credits. They are also taken into account when awarding scholarships, financial aid or educational grants. Thanks to the credits received, the most persistent and successful students can achieve a 100 percent discount on higher education.

After graduating from high school in America, the graduate does not have to take entrance exams to the chosen university, as during the period of high school he will take midterm exams and take language tests. Their scores, along with the final scorecard, simply need to be sent to one or more selected universities. This is the great advantage of American schools for Russian children – they do not have to rush to prepare for university entrance exams immediately after graduation. It will be enough just to wait for an invitation from those universities that are satisfied with the learning outcomes achieved by the graduate. Why is this approach good? Firstly, during the period of enrolling in the university, children do not experience much stress, because they know approximately what they can count on, and are not afraid to fail the exam due to an absurd accident or the teacher’s biased attitude towards them. Secondly, such a system stimulates the zeal of children to study not only before exams, but throughout the entire period of schooling.

Class attendance is also strictly controlled. For example, skipping 18 lessons per year in one subject can be a reason for not crediting a student for a course. Children eat only in the dining room or in the cafeteria of the school. It is forbidden to eat in the corridors and classrooms, and you are not allowed to bring food to class.

There is no place for drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and, of course, weapons in the boarding school. Even clothes decorated with such symbols or advertising are banned. There is a fight against gambling. Cheating is punished – everyone must earn grades on their own.

Any manifestation of any kind of intolerance and neglect – racial, gender, social, etc. is very severely suppressed. Sexual harassment, even at the level of a hint, is also unacceptable. Here, nothing interferes with the peaceful study and rest of students.

Not all schools require students to wear a uniform, but there are uniform rules regarding the appearance and clothing of students. Approximate timetable for the academic year in an American school

Choose the school that suits you, not the one that was recognized as the best.

Due to the fact that there are many universities in the USA, you and your family will surely pay attention to the ranking of universities. The following questions arise: What is the ranking of this university? Which schools are in the top ten?

Do these rankings represent the quality of universities in the United States? Should you choose a university based on university rankings in a magazine? While many good universities can be seen in these rankings, other excellent universities do not make it and it is very important for you to understand how the rankings are formed.

In your country, you are likely to pass the national university entrance exam. The higher your score, the “better” university you will attend. Getting into a university in the US is different. All US universities have good students and good teachers. Admission of students to the best universities depends on many factors, including whether parents studied at these universities.

The information that forms the ranking of universities is provided by the General Data Code, to which all educational institutions in the United States contribute. The people who make the ratings select indicators from the Common Data Code that they consider to be of high quality. Their criteria then determine the rankings. If they used different criteria, they get different ratings.

This means that if you rely solely on rankings, you are making one of the most important decisions of your life based on someone else’s opinion of what is important in higher education. For example, “selectivity” is an important element of ratings. This means that the fewer students choose this university, the “better” it is.

However, in the US, public universities, as well as many private ones, provide high quality education to as many qualified people as possible. They also want to have a diverse student community with people from different backgrounds. If an institution ranks high because it enrolls fewer students than an excellent public university that enrolls all qualified students, then it will not rank highly.

Graduation percentage is another example of how rankings can mislead you. If an institution accepts only students with high high school grades, the percentage of students who graduate from university will be high.

However, if the policy of the university is to admit students of different levels, the graduation rate of the university will be lower, which will lower its ranking.

In short, rankings based on selectivity, exclusivity, and reputation are dubious measures of the quality of education you will actually receive at a US university. For example, did you know that the reputation of a good university depends on world-class faculty who rarely, if ever, teach university students? In these institutions, most of the lessons will be taught by graduates or junior teachers.

Therefore, you can read the ratings to discuss with your friends and supervisors, but before making a choice, think about what you really want from the university, find out more about the institution that interests you and choose the one that suits you, and not the one that was recognized as the best.
