Imagine that you decide to learn how to shoot a bow. You watched all three parts of The Lord of the Rings several times in a row and spent your youth playing Skyrim. It seems to you that there is nothing difficult in shooting, and instructors are unreasonably expensive. And so you begin to master the bow yourself, leave yourself a few bruises with a bowstring, lose all the arrows and suffer from neck pain for weeks. You start to feel like something is wrong. nine0003

Now imagine that you have decided to order the development of an IT product. You turn to developers and ask them to make a software solution, and in order to save money, you refuse the services of a project manager. We bet if you can successfully reach the release? How can a project manager help you? Time to put everything in its place.

Who is a project manager in IT?

The project manager is a person who organizes the smooth operation of all processes and provides communication between the customer and the contractor. PM is a sought-after specialist in any field: from construction to education. An IT project manager is a person who performs these tasks in the field of software development. He communicates with the client and finds out his needs, monitors each stage of development and reports to the customer on the progress of the product. nine0003

In order to understand what a project manager does, it is necessary first of all to identify his areas of responsibility. There are three major areas that are a priority in the work of the PM:

  1. Achieving the goals of the project and the client. The primary functions of the project manager and the company as a whole are the effective fulfillment of the tasks set by the customer. At the same time, it is important not only to achieve the goal by any means – it is necessary to leave the client satisfied so that in the future he will contact the company again. nine0038
  2. Achieving the goals of the authorities and the company. These primarily include financial indicators, which are closely related to project management. This point is important both for the developer company and for the customer. If the processes in the company, including project management, are set up correctly, then each party can avoid unnecessary costs.
  3. Achieving goals development teams . The task of a project manager is to build an effective teamwork process. Sometimes, during the creation of a project, he motivates employees, helps in achieving career goals and prevents conflicts. nine0038

Project managers tirelessly monitor every detail of the product creation mechanism. It is in their power to change the course of work, find a mistake, make the client more loyal and rally the developers. Let’s discuss the functional responsibilities of a project manager in more detail.

Project manager: tasks

The duties of a project manager can be briefly described as follows: he connects customers and team when working on project . Thus, there are three main links, each of which requires attention and active actions from the PM. Let’s look at the responsibilities of a project manager in each of the three areas.

Customer

First of all, the project manager must understand the client’s requirements for the final product. At this stage, the PM prioritizes: which features of the application or website are the most important, how the customer wants to retain customers, what interesting competitor solutions can be used. nine0003

The project manager oversees the development process and regularly demonstrates the functionality of the product, its versions and prototypes to the client. He also keeps records so that everything that happens with the project is recorded and does not raise questions.

To build trust with the customer, project managers keep the customer informed of changes and meet deadlines. If the team makes mistakes, then the PM is responsible for maintaining the company’s reputation and customer satisfaction. nine0003

Without a project manager, the customer would have to communicate directly with the developer. Those hours that a programmer could spend on code, he spends on talking. The release of the application is moving away, the customer is nervous and loses confidence. With PM, everyone is busy with their own business and is not distracted by extraneous tasks.

Having a project manager can often save you a lot of time. For example, when we developed the Unleesh educational app and ran several rounds of testing, the client decided to redesign the product and add a few basic features. Our RM did an excellent job: he was in touch with the customer 24/7, clarified the details, and when the deadlines for the completion of work were burning, he was able to distribute the load on the team in such a way that we picked up a good pace and handed over iOS and Android applications simultaneously, and three months later we prepared the web – version of Unleesh. nine0003

Required qualities:

  • responsibility;
  • stress resistance;
  • management skills;
  • ability to negotiate.

Team

If the project is small and involves only one developer, the customer will theoretically be able to communicate with the team himself. But if the project is complex, and there are 5 people in the team – an analyst, a designer, a tester, a front-end and a back-end developer? The client will have to call everyone, set tasks, figure out how the front differs from the back, and React from Angular. He will spend a working day on this, instead of developing a business and earning money. Thus, the primary task of the project manager is to manage the team. First of all, it is necessary to select the right people, and when the team is assembled, the PM brings colleagues up to date and distributes responsibilities and development stages among them. nine0003

The project manager ensures that each member of the development team meets deadlines. He sees in advance when someone is not on time, and can prevent a crisis. Thanks to this, the company avoids customer dissatisfaction, because it complies with quality standards and does everything on time.

Without management skills, the project manager will not be able to influence the actions of employees. To make the work on the project productive and enjoyable, PM motivates the team. He can build a truly effective interaction so that the work is as comfortable as possible. Good project managers prevent most conflicts and deal with them without any problems. nine0003

Required qualities:

  • leadership qualities;
  • sociability;
  • project management skills;
  • ability to work with people;
  • clear and concise presentation of thoughts.

Project

One of the main tasks of the PM is to control the work on the project. The PM represents the end result and distributes the workload and funds. He is not afraid of difficult tasks and knows how to approach them. The manager’s responsibilities in this area include quality control, deadlines, budgets, and risks. Its purpose is to ensure the implementation of the project with the available resources. Project activities can be divided into five main stages:

  1. Initiation – concept approval and project launch.
  2. Planning – sequencing and preparing for work.
  3. Execution – work on the project according to the developed plan.
  4. Control – regular monitoring of each stage, risk management and reporting.
  5. Closing – completion of the project and transfer of documentation to the customer.

Project processes must be transparent and understandable to all parties. This is also the responsibility of the project manager. With the help of relevant specialists, he prepares reporting documents, such as terms of reference, functional requirements and financial statements. If the manager does it well, then each party will understand what is required of it and what rights it has. This increases the level of trust and the quality of the final product.

At all stages, the PM monitors the quality of the product and organizes development processes so that builds (code assemblies) are tested as often as possible. This helps to catch bugs at the very beginning of the project, and not before the release. The project manager checks if the software solution meets the technical requirements and initiates a code review. If necessary, he asks the designer to verify the design – to perform architectural supervision, as it was on our project for the CDEK courier service. All these actions ensure the quality of the final product. nine0003

Required qualities:

  • confidence in the result of work;
  • analytical skills;
  • personal organization;
  • high performance.
  • IT knowledge;
  • the ability to see the big picture.

Conclusion

After a couple of weeks of onion bruising, you finally decided to hire an instructor. Since then, everything has gone like clockwork: the arrows do not break from improper handling and the neck has ceased to hurt. And you have finally begun to hit the target and are even ready to participate in competitions. Who knows what other results working with a coach will lead to? 😉 Send us an email [email protected] and our project managers will comfortably and professionally guide you through the entire process of creating an IT product.
