Useful with pleasant

With the advent of summer, all cheap hotels “left”, which should not be confused with student “hostels”, and inexpensive 2-3-star hotels in Spain are overcrowded, so it is worth booking a room well in advance. It is in the summer that foreigners are overcome by a passionate, irresistible desire to learn something, to feel the unique Spanish flavor and temperament, which are manifested in absolutely everything, even in the educational process. And if earlier our parents sent to study, and at the same time to relax in Spain, mostly children of school age, today students and those who have already unlearned and cheerfully walk up the career ladder are willing to come here. Yes, and the parents themselves often prefer to combine their studies with a beach-excursion vacation: it’s a common thing when a mother and a son or daughter study in the same group. By the way, Spanish language schools also offer a course for very mature students who are over 50 – this is usually 15 lessons per week, in which teachers use special methods designed for this age category.

According to the National Institute of Tourism of Spain, 68% of tourists come to the country for recreation, 8-10% of tourists come for work and education. Tourists who come under various educational programs bring a consistently high income to the national tourism industry, which, at times, even exceeds the income from “ordinary” tourism. In 2012, receipts from educational tourism increased by 28% compared to 2011, amounting to 2 million 26 thousand euros. Educational tourism is not seasonal, however, in the summer, when schoolchildren and students have holidays, the number of visits to this sector of the Spanish national tourism market increases many times over.

In the footsteps of Cervantes, Calderon and Lope de Vega

In Spain, you can learn English, French, Portuguese, German, and, of course, Spanish, or Castilian, as the Spaniards themselves call the official language of the country. There are several main language centers where the leading and popular language schools among Russians are located in Spain: Madrid, Barcelona, Salamanca, Valencia, Alicante, Malaga, Granada. The resort town near Malaga, chosen by wealthy Russians, stands apart, here for life and study there are consistently high prices, as well as for real estate, and consistently high demand, here is the Spanish Mecca for the rich from Russia, China and Arab countries, owners of yachts and expensive cars, here it is customary to send children exclusively to private schools, mostly British or American, and therefore the cost of summer language training is completely inadequate to the average prices in the country.

If you choose places to study not on the coast (in Granada, Seville or in the central part of the country – in Madrid and Salamanca), it will be cheaper. In this case, it will be possible to go to the sea for the weekend by bus, regular or high-speed train AVE. Madrid, in addition to being the capital of Spain, where a huge number of museums and monuments are concentrated, is interesting for its surroundings, which can be visited on weekends or in the evenings: Segovia, Toledo, Avila, Escorial, the hometown of Cervantes Alcala de Henares (there is a house – museum of the creator of images of the hidalgo Don Quixote from La Mancha and his faithful squire Sancho Panza). In Madrid there is a house-museum of Lope de Vega and a monument to Calderon de La Barca, located opposite the main and oldest drama theater in the country, Teatro Espanyol. Salamanca included in 1988 in the UNESCO World Heritage List – a very beautiful city, considered the center of student life in the country, the University of Salamanca – one of the oldest in Europe, was established in 1254. Seville and Granada will conquer with their Moorish architecture of the era of Arab rule in Andalusia, however, in summer it is very hot there, not everyone can withstand the daily 50-degree heat. Granada is more pleasant in this sense: firstly, it is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and every night a pleasant coolness descends on the city from the mountain peaks – a real salvation from stuffiness and heat, and secondly, the Mediterranean beaches are located only 30–40 minutes by car on the highway.

This year they began to offer to study, for example, in San Sebastian (the most beautiful city in the north of the country, on the shores of the Bay of Biscay in the autonomy of the Basque Country, known for its film festival and received from the Spaniards the honorary title of the gastronomic capital of Spain due to the large number of restaurants with stars ” Michelin”), Almuñécar (the capital of the Costa Tropical resort region in the south, in Andalusia, famous for its wild beaches and tropical fruits grown here), Segovia (a medieval city in Castile and León, near Madrid, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List).

Spanish language schools teach Spanish from any level, including from scratch. In order to have a good effect and a good result, experts recommend taking a language course for at least three weeks, as this is the optimal time for adaptation and immersion in the language environment. True, more often students from Russia come for two weeks. The cost of a two-week course depends on the school and the region: what will cost 350-400 euros in Salamanca or Granada, in Barcelona and Malaga will cost 750-800 euros. All schools have a rule: the longer the period of study, the cheaper the week of study. The price includes classes (Spanish course 20 lessons per week) and accommodation in a single or double apartment in a student residence. If you choose a hotel or apartment, there will be a different price. Air tickets, insurance, visa and textbooks are paid separately. You will also have to eat on your own – in cafe-bars or buying groceries in the nearest supermarket.

We cook, dance and sing

They say that you learn a language better if you learn something pleasant, useful and interesting in it. For example, theater skills, singing, or dancing. Flamenco language programs are very popular among Russian women – 8-10 dance lessons per week, which can be combined with Spanish classes. It is best to go and learn how to dance flamenco in Andalusia, the birthplace of temperamental, expressive dance (Seville, Granada, Malaga), but you can also find a good course in Madrid. Of the other dances, salsa and tango lessons are popular. Humanities students, professional philologists, journalists, art historians and anyone interested in world literature and culture may be interested in special courses in the history, art or literature of Spain. The loads here are more intense – 2-3 lessons per day, which can also be combined with language lessons.

If you are not ready for a serious study in the summer, then the right thing is to choose a cooking course combined with a language intensive. Working with knives and ladles, you will not notice how you begin to speak and understand Spanish quite tolerably. Spanish chefs will be happy to teach you the secrets of making proper and authentic gazpachos, paellas, tortillas, tapas-pinchos and other Spanish dishes. The cost of specialized courses, depending on your level of knowledge of Spanish, starts from 200-250 euros per week.

Sports Summer Camp

Many parents prefer to send their child to a summer camp where they can improve their English or Spanish and do a lot of other interesting things. Most summer camps in Spain are located under the roof of schools, colleges and university campuses. You can send your child to relax and have fun on the coast, or you can go to the mountains, there are natural places of amazing beauty, where the purest air and water will bring no less benefit to a young body than a vacation at sea. In July, two weeks of vacation in a summer camp in Barcelona, Malaga or Valencia will cost 1500-1600 euros, in August a little cheaper – 1350-1400 euros. This price includes an English or Spanish course (20 lessons per week), teaching materials, accommodation, three meals a day, several excursions per week, cultural and sports events. Children do what they like and what their soul lies in: theatrical, stage skills, dancing, music and singing, football, basketball, swimming, tennis, horse riding. Small, sickly and dependent children can be identified in a day camp (from nine in the morning to eight in the evening), a son or daughter will spend the night with their parents, who are resting in the same area where the camp is located. This format will cost significantly less – 700–900 euros for two weeks.

And in the end, a small but very significant nuance: all the prices mentioned are offered by Russian companies specializing in educational tourism. If you try to find a summer camp for a child (“campamento de verano” – el campamento de verano) or a language school for yourself (“escuela de idiomas” – la escuela de idiomas) on your own, then the surprise will be incredibly pleasant: the difference in prices, sometimes, reaches 100–200%. So, a week-long language course can cost only 150-180 euros, and two weeks of rest in a summer camp – language or sports – 600-700 euros. Many camps have special offers (“offers”) for groups of at least 10-15 people, for children from the same family (2-3 children) and for long-term visitors (three weeks or more).

refreshing Spanish summer wine cocktail

In the middle of summer in southern Spain, the sun’s rays are so intense that even flocks of pigeons, usually busy combing the streets in search of food, cool off in the shade. And people lounging in the wicker bar chairs that fill every corner of the square relax with glasses of fizzy ruby red Tinto de Verano.

A favorite summer drink for many Spaniards, Tinto de Verano is a simple combination of red wine and lemon sparkling water that gives the cocktail a refreshing, fizzy and light sweetness.

Tinto de Verano has more to do with Spanish life than just the seasonal climate; its invention, as well as its evolution, is intertwined with the culture, traditions and food tastes of the country.

The origin of Tinto de Verano

According to the Spanish gastronomy journalist Alfredo Martin-Gorris, in the 1920s, Federico Vargas, owner of the La Venta de Vargas shop, began adding soda from his siphon to carbonate his homemade red wine, making it more refreshing for merchants, musicians and heat-stricken bullfighters. It became an instant hit and the drink was named “Vargas”.

Around the same time, in nearby La Rambla, Rafael Alguacil Romero began producing carbonated drinks under the name Alguacil Beverage Company. His Alguacil lemon soda, along with ice, was soon added to the popular Vargas drink to add some sweetness and chill out on a hot day.

Like the gazpacho soup, this cocktail is exceptionally summery; with the advent of cold weather, the drink disappeared. Ultimately, Vargas took the name to reflect the time of year – Tinto de Verano , which translates to “summer red wine”.

Modern Tinto de Verano

Fast forward to today. The formula of Tinto de Verano is as rote as gintónica (Gin and tonic): cheap red wine, ice and La Casera, the national citrus soda. (Other lemon sodas such as Sprite or 7UP can also be used.)

Let’s talk about red wines preferred for this drink. Called “table wines”, in Spain they are usually sold by weight in small local shops. These are usually young wines that have not been selected for aging in barrels. The taste is too strong and viscous to drink neat. Alternatively, you can use Grenache, Tempranillo or Pinot Noir.

Making Tinto de Verano

To make a traditional drink, finding a Spanish soda will take some effort. However, in many establishments, Tinto de Verano is served the old fashioned way: only red wine is prepared in a glass with ice and a slice of lemon, and the guest can add soda from a can to taste.

However, modern variations of Tinto de Verano do not always use red wine, at least not in the strictest sense of the word. One of the bartenders noticed that replacing red wine with vermouth gives the drink a sweeter and nuttier taste. In many restaurants, it is a fan favorite.

One of the Tinto de Verano recipes

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 300 ml red wine, preferably grenache or pinot noir.
  • 300 ml lemon soda such as Sprite or 7UP.
