Alexandra : Good afternoon. Alexandra Petrovskaya at the microphone. This is the program for the big ones. And today we have the biggest problem that any parent faces sooner or later (in general, 7 years after the birth of a child) – how to choose a school, choose a private school in St. Petersburg. Many decide quite simply – using the MFC, State Services, enroll in the nearest district school and live quite happily for the next 11 years. And someone decides to go the other way. And, in fact, we are talking about them today. Natalya Korol, representative of the project “Just to study”, an expert in the selection of an alternative school.
Natalia, hello.
Natalia : good afternoon.
Alexandra : Let’s start with the first question. And this
not the question “how to choose a school”, although we will also approach it, but the question
in the motivation of parents who decide to go the other way. How we are with you
we talked before the start of the broadcast, it always seemed to me that this motivation is precisely because
that they are looking for something that the public school does not provide – some kind of freer
program, that is, something that cannot be obtained in a public school. Like me
I understand that I was deeply mistaken, and the motivational factors that cause
choice of alternative schools, quite a lot. What are they?
Natalia : you were not very wrong. Indeed, there are slightly more factors than those you mentioned. Parents are not only looking for a school that is different from the public school and a way to interact with their children, they are primarily looking for people who are like them.
For example, many IT professionals do not send their children to public schools, because this is a completely different professional field, and it is very painful for them, for example, the lack of respect from adults for children. In their professional sphere, mutual respect is one of the foundations: you are a professional, I trust you, we are approximately on the same level, there is no rigid hierarchy. And when their child comes to a public school and immediately falls to the bottom layer of the hierarchy, because he is completely powerless, he just has to do what is prescribed for him as part of the educational process, then parents, of course, cannot live with this, and they are looking for some other way.
Someone is looking for like-minded people, that is, people who are close to the creative atmosphere. And in general, we live in St. Petersburg, near Finland, and parents are familiar with the Finnish education system, the Swedish education system, the scents of democratic education, a respectful approach to children, etc.

A lot of parents choose alternative and private schools already in elementary school, because children start having health problems. Alexandra : and they are not accredited?
Natalia : Yes, this is their conscious choice. Because they just want to maintain flexibility, the ability to follow the interests of children, and not according to a rigidly established schedule, where every day is scheduled.
To devote more time first to this, then to another, make a day dedicated to mathematics, a week dedicated to mathematics, a month dedicated to mathematics, and then switch to literature, synthesize this, etc. There are more and more such schools, and there is less and less need for them to enter the crucible of accreditation.
In general, Russia has one of the most liberal education systems in terms of law. And this flexibility, the opportunity to enroll a child in family education, to take assessments in a mode convenient for you, and at the same time your child studies at a family school or at some author’s school, and the learning process goes in parallel at its own pace and is much richer than in public school. There is such an opportunity, and it’s great.
Alexandra : but how realistic is this?
I understand that many parents worry about what they would like, but at the same time
time they are afraid to leave the child. And the most common question: what will you
to do later, how will you go to university without a certificate and without the exam? And
how realistic is it, studying like this in a private individual school, family

Alexandra : okay, let’s talk about
that not only people who go the other way and choose for themselves, I would

Parents carefully prepare for the beginning of the school year, choose from several schools that are available. But at the same time, schools also look at what families come to them. And sometimes the head of the school sees that they have different principles, different views on life. For example, the school declares trust in the child, that they are based on the needs of the child in their work, but nevertheless the parents (or one of the parents) insist that it is important that there are prescriptions, it is important for him that at a certain age the child knows multiplication table (and this is normal, because if it is important to give birth, then the child will also be important), and if he does not receive this at school, then internal tension arises, just the very conflict arises that both the school and the family are having a hard time .
Therefore, school leaders talk to parents for a long time. Some schools even introduce multi-stage entrance interviews, some schools look at the level of children, because there are private schools that choose not only a family, but also a child, so that children are at a certain intellectual level. Someone makes a selection, not based on the intellectual level of the child, but look more at values. Differently. This selection of families is rather about closing a certain safety loop: the more the family and the school coincide in values, in that they look in the same direction at the process of interaction with children, the less difficulties there will be.
Alexandra : let’s approach the key question then: how to choose a private school in St. Petersburg, firstly, to understand why you need this school, and how to choose it further.
Natalia : How to make the basic decision that I need a private school is different for different families.
It usually occurs when there is some key gap between the fact that I don’t want my children to grow up in an environment where they are not considered, where they are not paid attention, where they are obliged to do homework all the time, arrive on time.
On the one hand, this seems to be a good thing – the child learns to be punctual, take responsibility and complete tasks. But a lot depends on the characteristics of a particular child, and when he receives this load at the age of 7, then it is perceived very painfully, including by the whole family.

These are only private and copyright, family, alternative, Montessori, etc. That is, even orienting yourself in these 140 schools is already a lot of work. They look around the district, but for some families even the district does not matter, they are becoming more and more mobile: you can rent an apartment in any district of the city, etc.
We wrote a seven-point instruction about what to look for when choosing, but if it’s completely rounded and generalized, then, of course, it’s important to start by sitting down and trying to figure out with yourself the key adults within the family who influence the decision choose a school. It can be not only mom and dad, it can be uncles, aunts, grandparents, who are actively involved in one way or another.
If I were to determine for myself how I choose a school, I would start by looking at the head of the school. Because a private school, as a rule, is largely a reflection of the personality of its creator, its leader.
Then I would look at the atmosphere. That is, when you are inside the school, it is very important to be attentive to how adults talk to each other. Not with you, because, of course, you are in the position of a person of interest, and they are interested in you to some extent. And here is how relationships are built, teachers talk with the leader: on you or on you, how reverently it happens or relaxed, how adults at school communicate with children – by name, patronymic or some kind of democratic style, how people look – more formally or relaxed.
And listen to how it resonates with you. If you are comfortable in this, in the environment where you are here and now, then you should check the box next to this school and take a closer look at it.
Be more attentive to your children, look at their strengths and weaknesses, what inspires them, what makes them sad. At the same time, you, as a responsible parent, understand the range of opportunities that you must provide, some kind of basic level. Just decide for yourself what is the baseline for you. This will help you understand which private school in St. Petersburg is right for you.

We immediately understand that we are in a special school.
But it is not only the cozy, almost homely atmosphere that surprises, but also the very approach to learning. The four age levels in the “Trajectory of Life” are four special worlds, each of which has its own problems and tasks.
Preschoolers (3.5 years – 6 years old)

In elementary school (grades 1-4)

Secondary School (grades 5-7)
Develops students’ independence and prepares them for the “academic onslaught” that awaits children in high school and will only grow year by year. At the same age, it is important to introduce children to the diversity of the world of professions.

The latter takes into account the desires and inclinations of the student. For example, in the first grade, literacy, mathematics, English, sports, art, and a few other subjects will be compulsory. As options, you can choose Chinese, mental arithmetic (a way to develop children’s intelligence with the help of quick counting in the mind – Approx. Author) or a laboratory of intellectual games. And also programming or hip-hop in English. The choice is very wide.
