Gov. Steve Sisolak and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto listen as child care provider Anitra Lott speaks during a grand opening event for the Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center on Feb. 22, 2022, in Las Vegas, Nev.

A hub to provide child care resources has opened its first site in Las Vegas. One other location is expected to open in Reno later this year.

The Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center is the first of its kind in the state, where over 70% of the population lives in what the Center for American Progress calls a “child care desert.”

The goal is to streamline resources, making it simpler for child care providers to open their doors to children in their communities.

Anitra Lott opened Kingdom’s Daycare in Las Vegas at the height of the pandemic in 2020. At that time, she spent hours making phone calls to different agencies just trying to figure out what she needed to obtain licensure. This hub brings those agencies together in one office to help with every step of the process, even seemingly small tasks.

A young child plays inside the playroom at the Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center on Feb. 22, 2022, in Las Vegas, Nev. The playroom allows providers to bring the children they care for with them when they visit the center.

“Take, for instance, laminations,” she said. “You’d have to buy a laminating machine, and we didn’t have money for things like that. When we get to the part where we want to open a building, they help us fill out applications. It’s a lot!”

The laminating machine and computers are a part of the “lending library” set inside the coworking space. And, with the in-house playroom, providers don’t have to worry about a substitute when they come to visit during the workday.

The Division of Welfare and Supportive Services is funding the center with COVID-19 relief grants and through the American Rescue Plan. Marty Elquist is a director with a nonprofit called The Children’s Cabinet and explains the significance of funding this public-private collaboration.

“COVID has not been easy on any of us,” Elquist explained. “But especially hard on those with young children who are trying to make ends meet. Also, especially hard on our child care workforce who has operated on a shoe-string budget before COVID, only to find themselves with increased operating expenses, regulations [and] decreased enrollment.”

Agencies like the Las Vegas Urban League assist child care centers to become subsidized, and Wonderschool provides business tools to help drive enrollment. Both have offices in the shared-services model.

One other Child Care Services Center is expected to open in Reno later this year.

US Preschool

US Preschool is optional. Parents decide whether to send their child to kindergarten depending on the family budget and circumstances.

There are various types of preschools, including non-profit, church, private, Montessori schools. Non-profit schools are the least expensive. They employ parents as teacher assistants or as teachers. Church schools are tied to religious centers. The learning process in them includes religious education. Private schools are the most expensive. A number of private kindergartens use the Montessori method of teaching. This method is more a philosophy of life than a teaching method. It is based on the belief that every child is an individual with unique needs, interests and abilities. Montessori schools come in two levels: for children aged 2.5 to 6 and for children aged 6 to 12.

Private lessons are offered for children aged six months to three years. They combine the theory and practice of participating in play groups. There are schools that accept children between the ages of two and four. Lessons usually include arts and crafts, music, educational games, activities to develop motor skills and listening skills. Colleges also offer a variety of courses for young children one or more times a week, such as painting, dancing, cooking.

Many children attend private preschools from 2 to 5 years of age. The cost ranges from $5,000 to $15,000 per year depending on the school and area. School hours vary. As a rule, children attend classes for several hours in the morning from 9 to 11:30 and in the afternoon from 12:45 to 15:15, or 2 times a day. In some schools, it is possible to choose only morning or evening lessons, thereby reducing the cost.

Kindergartens maintain a close relationship with the home and parents. They are designed to introduce children to the social environment of the school.

Studies in several countries, including the US, have shown that children who attend preschool tend to develop faster than those who do not. The percentage of children attending children’s schools in the US is significantly lower (60%) than in Japan and many European countries. For example, in Belgium and France, 95% of children attend preschool. In some American cities, kindergartens are in short supply. You need to get in line as early as possible, perhaps even before conception.

Some of the most prestigious and expensive kindergartens require pre-screening and interviews with family members. Some people believe that choosing the “right” kindergarten is essential for future university admissions.

Kindergarten is highly recommended for children with non-native English parents. Even after a few months of preschool education, the child will integrate into the local society and will be well prepared for primary school.
