The Tuscaloosa Academy Preschool is a place where we nurture our students in a supportive environment based on each child’s individual needs.  Students are encouraged and challenged in a manner that develops a love of learning today and into the future.  Established in 1979 as an early childhood program, we offer two  types of programs for children. Our traditional pre–kindergarten classrooms, have mixed ages of 3 & 4 year olds, which feed into our traditional Kindergarten classrooms for 5 year olds. The second option is our Montessori classroom which has children who are 3, 4, and 5 years old.  Located in the heart of our University town, Tuscaloosa, we enroll about 80 students each year and welcome families from the city, county and around the world.

The mission of our preschool is to nurture our students in a culture of learning, exploration, independence, and joy. Our students are challenged in ways that further develop their critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity for a 21st Century education.

Our preschool is recognized by these accrediting bodies -National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and a dual accreditation with Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS)/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  These accreditations ensure we remain clear and focused on the learning environment offered to our students. We are also licensed by the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR), which regulates our health and safety policies.

Academics + Enrichments = Unmatched Opportunities

The curriculum in our preschool is academic based in a playful manner. Children learn while playing  academic and creative games. They learn to read on an individual basis working alongside the teacher on their specific level. Along with our basic curriculum, the students enjoy and learn in several enrichment classes. In preschool, the students take Spanish as their foreign language, they have music class, art class, computer class, they visit the school’s library, and when they are in kindergarten they go to PE daily. All of the children have daily opportunities for fine and large motor skill activities, whether in the classroom, Preschool Commons room, or outdoors.

    Senior: American Christian Academy has given me a better experience in primary AND secondary school than I ever could have dreamed of. The two athletics teams I was part of maintained a great balance between enjoyable and competitive, the clubs and organizations were plentiful, and the students were extremely kind (OF COURSE we didn’t all get along…it IS high school we’re talking about here; nonetheless, I had barely any problems at all with students and it was a rarity when major issues did occur between students). The most impressive and unique aspect of ACA in my opinion is the teachers. They are incredibly passionate about what they do and are very caring and understanding toward their students, and it makes such an impact. As for academics themselves, the math and science departments need some work; however, the English department is top notch.     Senior: When attending DSST, it was very good. I received a lot of support from the teachers when struggling and was able to create really strong relationships with my teachers. Academically I was always pushed to do my best, even when having doubt in myself teachers were right behind me to show me I could. The only thing that I would change is that throughout the years it appears that middle schoolers entering the high school are getting more and more disrespectful. It turning much more from a very mature and disciplined school to schools that are known for trouble such as other schools like Aurora Central or Hinkley. Besides that the school has great diversity, and support. It’s such a small school , everyone knows about everyone , giving a great sense of community…. Read 16 reviews
