Irving – located in Texas

Irving – a city located in the state of Texas, located 19 km west of Dallas, in Dallas County. Irving has a population of 205,541 according to the annual US Census. Among all cities in Texas, Irving ranks 13th in terms of the number of inhabitants. The city of Irving belongs to the agglomeration of the cities of Dallas, Fort Worth and Arlington. Irving has a neighborhood called Las Colinas, which was once the first integrated planning and development area in the United States, with an area of approximately 49km².

Many famous American companies are located here. On one of the central squares of the city there is a world-famous sculpture “Mustangs of Las Colinas”. An interesting fact is that this sculpture is considered the largest sculptural group in the world. The Las Colinas area is also home to Irving’s newest convention center. The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is located on the westernmost edge of the city of Irving.

The beginning of the history of the city can be counted from the moment when the first settlement Gorbit was founded, and in which since 1889until 1894 there was a post office. Already in 1894, this settlement was renamed Kit, and was moved to another place, where at that time it was planned to lay a railway. In its final version, the railway track was laid far away from the originally planned location. As a result of this, in 1902, Julius Otto Schulze and Otis Brown offered another, already third place, along with the new sonorous name of Irving. Presumably, the name was in honor of Washington Irving (1783-1859), who allegedly was the favorite writer of Brown’s wife, Netta Barkus Brown. The official founding date of the city of Irving is 1903. And in 1904, the post office had already moved there.

Ten years later, Irving was officially recognized as a city. It happened on April 14, 1914, and it was Otis Brown who became the first mayor of this new city. At the beginning of its formation, the city developed very slowly. So in 1925 it had only 357 inhabitants. Significant population growth began only in 1930s. In the early 1960s, the population of the city had already reached 45,000 people.
