Ann Arbor Fairy Doors

Red Shoes Fairy Door

B Ann Arbor Fairy Doors are a series of small doors that are a type of installation found in the city of Ann Arbor in the US state of Michigan. The first appeared on the baseboards of Jonathan and Kathleen Wright’s house in 1993. Subsequently, several others were found in their house: in the fireplace and two in the kitchen. On April 7, 2005, the first was seen in public on the front of Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea. Ten more have since appeared around Ann Arbor (as well as a parody of the “goblin door”), and seven of the original “public” doors still exist. [1] [2]

Story

The first public fairy door appeared near Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea on April 7, 2005. [3] set by Jonathan B. Wright, graphic design technology educator. The next one was installed near the Peace Kingdom gift shop in Ann Arbor and appeared on April 17, 2005. The third door was discovered on May 11, 2005 outside the Selo Shevel Gallery. Art Gallery. 9June 2005, a magic door appeared at Jefferson Market, but the store closed in October 2007. Ann Arbor Framing Co. discovered the next door on August 17, 2005, but the company closed in the summer of 2008 and the fairy door disappeared. The Ark Concert Hall hosted the next door when it appeared on August 25, 2005. The next was the Red Shoes furniture and gift shop, which opened on November 17, 2005.

On April 11, 2006, a magic door appeared in the Voilà boutique. When Voilà closed on November 15, 2006, the fairy door also disappeared. The ninth door was installed in the back of Nicola’s Books on September 8, 2006 and built into the bookcase and books at the Ann Arbor County Library on November 4, 2006.

In 2010, a village fairy door appeared at a non-profit preschool and senior day care facility in Dexter, Migigan called Generations Together. It is said to have a portal that can be found in Gordon Field, which is in front of Gordon Hall, a historical landmark in Dexter. They are so new that they have not been depicted or described in detail anywhere except on urban-fairies.com.

At one time, several establishments kept guest books in which visitors could sign, ask pertinent questions or draw pictures. [4] This prompted Wright to publish a children’s book. Who is behind the doors of the fairies?

Locations and descriptions

Of the original ten public fairy doors in Ann Arbor, seven still exist in and around downtown. [1]

  • The door to Sweetwaters is inside, on the plinths opposite the counter. This is a simple white door with small details that mimic the details on the outside of the cafe.
  • The door to the Peaceful Kingdom is outside, to the right of the entrance, and inside you can see a small “fairy gift shop”.
  • The door of the Selo-Shevelskaya Gallery is located on the side of Svoboda Street, at the sidewalk level. It’s a simple red door with tiny gray bricks framing the door. [5]
  • The door to the Ark can be found on the left side of what was once the ticket office. The door mimics the style of the building and is plain brown with stained glass. During the renovation of the Ark in 2018, the fairies temporarily replaced this door with a building entrance in front of the building.
  • The door to Red Shoes is both inside and outside, directly to the right of the entrance. The small red door is almost an exact replica of the real entrance; Inside the store, there is a small green one that looks like doors inside the building. The red door on the outside reads “Our 123-4:5683?”, which is an interpretation of the real entrance, which lists the “hours” of the store.
  • The Ann Arbor County Library door is at the end of the Fairy and Folklore bookshelf in the Youth Department. It’s a small blue double door with a turquoise frame and a whole room inside “books” like Encyclopædia Britannica and Hans Christian Andersen Eighty Tales . Inside you can see a small table, decorated walls and other furniture.
  • The door to Nicola’s Books at Westgate Mall on Jackson Road is above the fireplace at the back of the store. It is dark brown, the frame consists of two book spines. Andersen’s Tales and Cinderella and other Italian Tales .

Other new magical doors appear around Ann Arbor:

  • Two additional doors have appeared next to the original Sweetwaters door. One of them is a small wooden building with a small coffee table inside. The other is a laboratory building built by the fairies to help players from the local quest room hunt down a runaway artificial intelligence. [6]
  • The door of the Crazy Wisdom bookstore and tea shop on S. Main Street is at the main entrance. [5] Two doors can be opened to reveal the interior or what is on the other side of the fairy door, which contains some sort of small dwelling.
  • The door to the Google offices in Ann Arbor is located in the ceiling of the Ann Arbor room. This door features an aluminum-framed glass panel and custom “Giggle” fairy logo in Google font and colors.
  • Two magic doors found in the FordLabs office. One is located in the lobby at the entrance. This magical door is always ajar for visitors to glimpse into the life of the Flabfish fairies. Another door, located at the back of the office, has a portal that takes employees directly to Ford’s Dearborn office.
  • Fairy Doors found in Generations Together and Gordon Field are identical. They are made of rustic wood, and on their wings, on either side of the doors, are tiny bouquets of wheat. Their porches are supported by tree branches.
  • The door to Washtenaw Dairy, located on the corner of South Ashley and West Madison, is outside to the right of the main entrance to the store.
  • In November 2015, a magic door was first discovered on the campus of the University of Michigan, on the ground floor of the Bob and Betty Beister Building, which houses the Computer Science and Engineering Division. [7] The door is mounted on the tower computer case. Pressing the computer’s power button turns on the light inside the case, revealing a dream world with winged fairies.
  • A miniature ATM exists at the Ann Arbor Bank in Washington.
  • There is a magic door in the ATM lobby of the Hooper Hathaway building on Main Street.
  • Arborland Starbucks has a fabulous cafe.
  • The Harlan Hatcher Alumni Library Service at the University of Michigan has a magic door with a doorbell that calls for help from staff.
  • There is a magic door inside Silvio’s Organic Ristorante e Pizzeria.

Local

Fairy doors have become iconic in Ann Arbor and surrounding smaller towns such as Dexter, where the village’s first fairy door and portal are located. Local children leave gifts in the hope that real fairies will receive them. Some of the gifts left at the door include pennies and nickels, drawings, tiny packages, candy, and glittery rocks. Some doors, such as the one at Sweetwater, have guest books where visitors can write reflections, stories, paint fairies, and ask questions. Sometimes a “fairy” answers questions from magazines. The general attitude towards fairy doors is mysticism and childlike adoration.

The Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce and some magic door businesses distribute cards and sell copies of Jonathan B. Wright’s book. Who is behind the doors of the fairies? and posters showing each door and its location. Many articles have been published about doors, including local and national ones. At Michigan Daily , the University of Michigan Student Newspaper ran an article titled “The Busiest Carpenters of Real Life Fairies A2?” [8] October 12, 2010 Washington Post April 23, 2006 published an article titled “Ann Arbor Proudly Presents: Doors.” [4]

Other doors

Fairy gates also appeared in neighboring towns. An Ypsilanti woman found a magic door at the base of a tree on the front lawn. [9] Saline solution in the southwest was “Treasure hunt at the door of the fairies.” [10] event in the spring of 2010. Nearby, Dexter held a Fairy Doors exhibition and competition around the same time, and plans to hold them annually. [11]

Goblin Door is the “sinister” variant of fairy doors and is slightly taller than them. It is located in Ann Arbor between the Ark and Seyfried Jewelers on South Main Street. As of July 2012, a Vogel’s locksmith in downtown Ann Arbor has placed a mass of keys forming the word “Fairy Door”, hinting that a new fairy door may be coming. As of May 29, 2014, there were 14 residential courtyard doors in the Ypsilanti area of Normal Park.
