At the age of 25, Alexey Dubinchuk won a green card and, without a job offer and good English, moved with his family to Mountain View. Miraculously got a job in a Chinese startup, survived the sale of the company, worked with a billionaire in a villa with a billiard house and a swimming pool, got laid off, and then ended up at Apple. In three years, he changed 5 jobs, mostly startups. For dev.by, the Belarusian willingly shared his adventures in the Valley.

I changed my salary for knowledge in databases and Linux

— I studied at the Polytechnic College, after which I entered the correspondence course at BSUIR with a degree in computer modeling and design of radio electronic devices. It was interesting to study, I remember that some Chicago company opened a computer class where we learned how to design boards on modern equipment. I was the headman, so from time to time I had to follow the group and remind them to pass control and laboratory work.

How did I get into IT? The Belarusian economy instills a love for IT. My salary was $300, and during the crisis it became $150. I studied on my own, got my hand on website development. My first job as a web developer was in a real estate agency. The interview was from the category: I see that you are a normal man, so you can handle it. Three programmers worked there, who were loaded with projects. Therefore, when I had questions and had to pull someone, I felt guilty for it. In general, it was not the best place for a novice developer.

Therefore, I soon left for a lower salary, but with the opportunity to develop. In the office of Moscow ROZUMsoft in Minsk, I was hired as a Junior Full stack Developer. Employees of the company gave lectures on databases, programming languages, and gave homework on Linux. This knowledge, by the way, later helped me when looking for a job in America.

2013 has been a busy year. I had a diploma defense, I won a green card, I was preparing to move and I was closing the last questions on the project in order to transfer it to a new Full stack developer.

We sent an application for a green card in 2012, and the answer came only a year later. We have already forgotten about the lottery, when a letter from the US State Department arrives in the mail. I go to the site and see that our questionnaire has won. Joy soon gave way to disappointment. Our lucky ticket was number 40150. As a rule, such numbers are not even reached when issuing visas. In our year, invitations were no longer issued on number 40200, so we barely squeezed into this framework. The invitation was received only in 2014.

In Belarus, by the way, a lot of green cards disappear, people win them and don’t move to the States. Migration is not like going to Turkey.

It’s convenient that with a green card you forget about the problem “what if I get fired.” There are a lot of guys with work visas around me, and they have a lot more stress than me, especially when they come with their families.

Phone book for the rich

I started looking for a job from Minsk. It was difficult. I didn’t have English at all, I don’t know how recruiters tolerated my “I am on duty today” level. Even now, I believe that the most difficult stage in finding a job is a telephone interview. A person sees a resume and imagines at least a middle specialist, and you speak with errors, bad pronunciation and apply, for example, for the position of Senior Developer. Inconsistency.

I didn’t manage to get an offer remotely, so we drove for good luck. When we were already on the plane, the hostess, from whom we were supposed to rent a house, sent a message: “Sorry, our tenants are not moving out, let me return your prepayment.” This is how we ended up in a foreign country with a baby in our arms and several suitcases, and we arrived late in the evening. If it weren’t for my classmate who let us in for the night, we would probably have to spend the night on the street. Fortunately, on the second day we already found a new apartment, however, in a remote residential area.

I was very motivated to get the job because we had just under $10,000 in reserve. A European resume and an American one are completely different things. For example, an American does not need a photo and some personal data, because this is discrimination. At the same time, it is important that LinkedIn and GitHub are as well filled as possible. The Russian-speaking guys in the Valley helped me with my resume, suggested what to remove and what to add. When I tried to get a job at Google, I was interviewed by a Russian guy, but in the end I was refused.

Ended up finding a part-time job at BloomSky, a Chinese startup that is developing a camera for collecting geological data. They took me there because I was good at solving problems with databases and could write scripts to integrate the database with various devices. They paid about $ 90 thousand, it was not bad for a start. It was great there – a good team and product. Eight people sat in one “cube” (such an open space with cubic partitions), an American brought a dog to work that ran around the office, and everyone threw a ball at her.

After getting a job, I can say that I exhaled and even began to do other things. The first thing I did was pass my license. I didn’t have a car in Minsk, and I felt great. And here it is almost impossible to do without it. The only option is to live in the city. But the cost of renting housing in the center of San Francisco leaves much to be desired. The city is very small, not family friendly, and everyone wants to live there.

At first it took 3 hours to get to work and the same amount back. But I didn’t complain, on the contrary, I was extremely happy, because people with two diplomas and good English are looking for a job for six months, and it took me a little more than a month. I connected unlimited internet and learned English on the way. It lasted a couple of months, then we found a place closer. This time they were not in a hurry, they were looking deliberately, so that both the area was good and the school was nearby.

Six months later, I decided to leave this startup. They asked me to stay, but I came to America, not to China.

After the first job in the States, recruiters began to call and offer completely different money. Therefore, I easily found a new position in a company that made a product for collecting and selling analytics. A classic old project with a bunch of legacy code. This employment turned out to be a big mistake, because the company was soon bought by a corporation, and work stopped. For several months there were no tasks, everyone was waiting for changes, but nothing happened. As a result, one Russian guy I met lured me to the startup Synchora.

It was a crazy act, because the guys had just received a seed investment, they had a billionaire friend who said that a million dollars for a startup is not much. The guys rented a villa with a pool. Nearby was a billiard house, which they equipped as an office. I, iOS developers and a designer worked in this homemade office.

We have developed a super secure phone book with an increased level of security for millionaires. Its essence is that if you lose your phone, no one will be able to see the contacts of your acquaintances, for example, from Hollywood. Also, this solution may be appropriate in business, when you want, for example, to bring people together, but cannot give personal contacts.

I built the server side of the application, worked with Node JS, JavaScript, Amazon cloud services, interviewed people. I learned a lot in this startup, because its founders encouraged any initiatives. But, unfortunately, they themselves did not really know what they wanted, and one day they decided to move to Los Angeles. I didn’t want to leave, so I stayed, but helped them with development remotely while they were looking for new developers.

After this job, I very quickly found a new one – at thismoment startup. By that time, I began to understand Americans better and speak English fluently. Therefore, the interview was no longer as difficult as before. The story of the startup that I got into this time began with two rich people playing golf, after which one of them gave investments to create a company totaling $50 million. A photo of golfers was hung in the startup’s office.

Having worked in several startups, I can say that people here do not save money, and you can feel it: renting an office, for example, costs $50,000 a month. When I got a job, I said that I already had several offers, and then they offered me a bonus of $20,000.

This startup created a business platform where you can generate websites, mobile applications and create content. They had large customers – Starbucks, Sephora, Walt Disney – and strong developers. But, as I later realized, the founder of the startup wanted to sell the product, but the investors did not allow it, and then he decided to change course and reduce the team. I did not fall under the first wave of layoffs, but I was already preparing for my turn to come.

Interview at Apple

When I was invited for an interview at Apple, other offers dropped by themselves. I understood that in order to get into such a corporation, the resume should contain big names of companies. Everyone knows EPAM, Wargaming, but no one knows the Moscow ROZUMsoft, where I worked before coming to America.

All corporations have roughly the same interview script, and American colleges prepare students for this stage of their lives. Therefore, graduates automatically solve problems for logic, algorithmization, etc. Because of this, there is very high competition among applicants. The peculiarity of the Valley is that it is easy to get an interview on Facebook, Google and any other companies, but it is difficult to get an offer. Not only do you have to technically fit, but also fit into the team, according to all its members.

The interview at Apple consisted of several parts. They asked the bare minimum over the phone, they were more interested in my experience. The next step is an interview at the company’s office. You are met, registered, then a 4-hour interview begins.

The first 40 minutes you solve problems on your MacBook. I had 10 multi-level tasks. There was no time to google, so I decided it myself and as quickly as possible. The situation was not stressful, but different people came into the office one by one and tried to create a pleasant atmosphere, which made me even more worried. After the time was up, the manager, technical lead and developer came into the office and asked to explain the solution of some problems on the board.

The offer came quickly and I became an Apple contract employee. This form of employment has both disadvantages (for example, fewer bonuses and days off, it is easier to fire a person), and advantages – you can find a project with a high rate (urgent), and make good money on it or overtime at double rates.

In the Valley, many people work like this, all the newspapers write that a janitor on a contract, cleaning in the subway, earned $ 270 thousand a year. It is beneficial for companies to plan their budget by hiring contractors (you can refuse them at any time). Everything is fair on the contract, you can not be afraid that you will be thrown. The amount of earnings is discussed directly, and you can always review the salary.

When you’re a developer, you don’t care if you’re a contractor or not. You work with the same code, with the same tickets as the rest. My position is this: try to write proven code, use Unit tests, work on weak points, and everything will be fine. One of my friends was transferred from a contract to an employment contract. But there were other cases when an American who worked on a contract was fired after 5 months, although before that he worked at Microsoft.

I work on internal Apple products. The whole team (both contractors and people on an employment contract) works in one open space. My working day, like everyone else, is eight hours.

We’re working on products that only Apple employees have access to. About 70 percent of these services are focused on analytics and reporting. There are many projects, so you don’t get bored. I have worked with 3D visualization of models, graphics for displaying collected statistics, cloud solutions. On a number of projects, I had a chance to work with a UI team, which included employees hired by Steve Jobs.

Once a week we hold morning stand-up rallies attended by all engineers. We get into a circle and discuss completed and planned tasks. I miss San Francisco a little, of course. In Santa Clara, where I currently work, there is almost nothing close to work, except for an office cafe. But the Valley as a whole is very friendly and liberal. There are no cuts on the roads, any minorities are welcome. Here I have never seen conflict situations. Even dismissed politely.

Do I want to go back to the startup? It is clear that while you are young, it is more interesting to work in a startup. As an engineer, you can try any technology, offer your own solutions, and you will not be stopped. On the contrary, they will support and say “do it dude, do it”. The corporation will answer “yes, cool, someday we will do it.” In a startup, you are like on the front line: in the morning you receive a task, and by the evening you are already deploying it. In a corporation, of course, this will not work. Here it is super important to give a good estimate of the time: when you implement the task and when it goes into production. It depends on your assessment whether they will deal with you. If you mess up, then the conversation will be short.

Since I changed jobs so often, now I want to stay longer in one place. Working on a contract, I receive more than $130,000. Startups offer $200,000. But I see the situation as an investment in the future. After all, if you often change jobs, the employer may have a question: maybe something is wrong with you?

Schools in which the director does not hide from children

With taxes in the States very strict, for a mistake they can be sent to prison. We have a progressive tax, on average 30 percent of income. To calculate it correctly, you need to take into account all payments (education, medical, kindergarten, etc.), fill out a tax return, take into account state tax, federal tax, etc. Therefore, it was easier for me to hire an accountant, pay him $ 100, so that he would say how much we need to pay to the treasury.

The cost of renting accommodation depends on the rating of the school. The higher the rating (8/9/10), the more people want to send their children there. Housing in the area adjacent to a good school is much more expensive. Our child goes to a school with a rating of 9. I like this school. I remember our Soviet schools: lineups in the morning, obligatory work, discipline, etc. And here the children sit on the carpet in the center of the class, draw, sculpt. Teachers arrange themed parties, turn on the music, and the children play and have fun. The purpose of the school is to teach social relationships.

It was probably the hardest thing for our daughter to learn a language in the family. But she already speaks a foreign language better than me and my mother. The problem with immigrant children is that both languages ​​are weaker, but this evens out over time.

I remember my director at a Minsk school: he would sit locked in his office and very rarely went out to the children. And here the principal of the school every morning helps to transfer children across the road, communicates with parents. And he does this not because he is kind, but because it is his job, and he teaches others to do so. By the way, in the States, many take their children for additional education. In general, people here learn a lot and instill it in their children.

IT people in the Valley live more modestly than in Minsk

The entire area of ​​the Valley outside of large cities like San Francisco and San Jose is a large suburb.

In Minsk, if you are an IT specialist, you can buy a house, a car. Here programmers live much more modestly. Plus, California is extremely expensive right now. There are few high-rise buildings, everyone lives in two-three-story houses. We also rent a house in one of these houses.

There are a lot of Russians, but I try for the most part to communicate with foreigners – this way you will quickly understand whether it is worth it for you to be in this country at all. I traveled to different states and noticed that everywhere the standard of living is approximately the same, even in remote areas. In Belarus, in general, one cannot compare life in Minsk and in the outback.

Mountain View has good schools, parks, and easy commute to work. On weekends, we often go to the ocean in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, or go hiking in the mountains. The US has awesome libraries with activities for kids, clubs and meetups. For example, there are coding classes for high school girls run by Google engineers to fight the gender gap in the industry.

Frankly speaking, there is practically no free time. In Minsk I had a big vacation – three weeks, and here – a week.

I managed to realize my old dream of visiting Japan, it’s easy from California. Flights cost $600. The Japanese embassy is located in San Francisco, for citizens of Belarus a visa is free, registration took about a week. I planned a vacation to visit the cultural capital of Kyoto, restaurant paradise in Osaka, Uji green tea city, and Nara city with live deer in the park. Japan has a very developed transport system, from Kyoto you can get to another city within an hour with 2 transfers (subway + train). It was a unique experience and the best vacation of my life. After him, I discovered that a lot of immigrants from Japan live in California, forming entire districts (Japan Town in San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles) with their own shops, restaurants and festivals.
