Our Philosophy

St. John’s Preschool is a ministry of St. John’s Episcopal Church for families in the Wake Forest area. It is a place where children are loved and nurtured in a safe, secure environment. Children learn to cooperate, respect others, respect differences, grow spiritually, and develop confidence in their abilities. We strive to provide opportunities for children to explore, to be creative, and to be good stewards of all that God has given us. We welcome children of all races and faiths and recognize and respect differences in religious preferences.

Curriculum

We believe that effective early childhood education is determined by an understanding of children’s ages and developmental needs, their culture, their abilities and their natural curiosity about themselves and their environment. By being responsive to the changing needs of the children and their interests, our staff offers a child-centered program which includes teacher-directed and child-initiated activities. We use many “hands-on” learning experiences which stimulate all areas of development: cognitive, language, fine motor, gross motor, social-emotional, and spiritual growth.

The curriculum at St. John’s is play-based and integrates music, art, drama, and storytelling. For the younger children we incorporate learning experiences during routine care as well as provide a stimulating environment with age-appropriate toys and activities. For older preschoolers we organize activities around appropriate themes, units, or projects. Our goal ultimately is to prepare them for Kindergarten.

Tata Steel Chess

Tala Steel Chess is one of the oldest and strongest chess tournaments, held annually in the city of Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands since 1967. This tournament always pleases chess lovers with an exciting struggle between the strongest chess players in the world, and the last one was no exception. The highlight of the tournament was the presence of the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen, who as a result very confidently secured the 1st position in the standings without a single defeat. Magnus’s positional instinct and depth of immersion into the position of Magnus have always aroused admiration even among young chess players, but we love chess not only for technique, but also for fierce double-edged fights, incredibly sharp opening novelties, which are now in short supply at the professional level. Despite this, a magnificent game was played in the tournament in the spirit of the masters of the 19th century, where Teimour Radjabov defeated the Indian chess player Vidit Santosh Gujrati.

12. Bxc4 h6

13.g4

The Ragozin Defense has been played, and after the standard 13.0-0 Black would have been able to carry out a consolidating break in the center of e5. The move 13.g4 is a novelty in the opening and casts doubt on the combination of h6 and e5, because the further advance of the g-pawn allows you to open the file for an attack on the king, as well as capture the g5-square with the knight and put pressure on the f7-square with the help of the c4-bishop. It’s really better for Black not to open the а2-g8 diagonal, it is necessary to start active operations on the queenside with moves b7-b5-b4.

13… e5

14. g5 b5

15. Ba2 exd4

The position begins to noticeably worsen. The soulless machine considers the natural capture in the center a mistake and suggests taking the pawn on d4 with the knight and revealing the white monarch. After 15) e-d, e-d. 16) Ke2, Fe7. 17) Nfd4, h-g. 18) Be3, Bf4 Black’s initiative more than compensates for the sacrificed piece. Now White is not obliged to open approaches to his king and can continue the attack by including the Rg1 rook. It is important to understand that the white pawn on g5 is not interested in the knight on f6, but in the pawn cover of the black king – the pawn on h6, the destruction of which can allow the queen to decisively break into the g6 square. Another beautiful feature of the position is that one should start one’s active actions exactly with the move 16)Rg1, and not with 16)g-h, because after 16)…Bf4! Black is forced to play 17)h-g, and now his own pawn is a stumbling block to further attack. However, both whites and blacks do not find these subtleties.

16. gxh 6 dxc 3

17. Bxc3 Be6

It’s fair to say that after capturing a piece, the move 17)… Bf4 didn’t suit Black any more because of 18)Qg6,Ch6.19)Rd1!,Qe7. 20) Bf6, Qf6.21) Qf6, g-f.22) Rd7, Re7.23) Rd5 and White’s attack continues even after the exchange of queens. Despite the fact that the move Be6 looks much prettier and more logical, it leads to super-complex tactical positions that are incredibly difficult for a person to calculate, perhaps Santosh needed to move into the painful endgame discussed above, because there were still practical chances for a draw there.

18. Bxe6 Rxe6

19. Rg1 Ne8

Wrong move. 19)…,Nh5 followed by 20)Bg7,Bg3 was a great chance for Black to sharpen the game a lot! with the threat of Kg7 and again with the idea of using the white pawn on g7 as a cover for the black king. The capture of the bishop by the pawn is followed by 21)…,Ng7. 22) h-g, Le3. 23) Kf2, Rf3! and cannot be taken because of the fork on d4. The cold-blooded continuation 21) Ke2 or 21) Rg3 kept the advantage for White, but left the position as tense as possible. Now the whites are invading the possessions of the black monarch.

20. Bxg 7 Nxg 7

21. Rxg 7+ Kf 8

22.Qh7 Qf6

23.Ng5

Black tries to counterattack, taking the rook leads to a draw in the simple variation 24)f-g,Bg3. 25)Kd1,Qf1.26)Kc2,Qe2.27)Kb1,Qd1.28)Ka2,Nb4! Instead of Qf1, the inclusion of the Rd8 rook is also sufficient for a draw, but Black cannot deliver any checkmate. But White ignores the rook sacrifice and extravagantly shelters the king.

24. Kf 1 Nd 8

25. Qg8+ Ke7

26. h7 Bg3

Black continues to create difficulties for White, but the clear move 27)Ne4, which combines attack and defense, does not leave the Indian chess player with a single chance of salvation.

27. Ne4 Rxe4

28.Rxg3Rh5

29. Rd1 Rxh7

30. Re3+ Ne6

31. Qxa8 Rh8

32. Qc6 Kf8

Not the best move in a bad position. White ends the game with a tactical strike.

33. Rxe6 Qxe6

34. Rd8+ Kg7

35.Qc3+ f6

36.Qxc7+

And Black resigned. Such games leave an indelible impression for many years, and it is for such games that we love our ancient game.

30 useful apps for kids, teens and parents

To learn letters and numbers, understand physics, record your track and learn to focus.

Although we are generally opposed to giving children gadgets almost from birth and entertaining them with cartoons, sometimes a tablet or smartphone is simply indispensable. We have collected three dozen applications for different ages (there are even for parents), which not only entertain, but also teach. The selection includes reading and counting, puzzles, audiobooks, science, action sports video tutorials, and meditation apps.
