George Mason University (Mason) is a public university, the largest research institute in the state. It was founded as a branch of the University of Virginia in 1957 and became an independent educational institution in 1972. The university is named after George Mason, one of the founding fathers of the United States, the author of the famous Bill of Rights.

Academic English Program (AE). The course is intended for students who do not have sufficient English proficiency for direct admission to George Mason University. Upon admission, applicants can apply for either the AE program or the Pathway Program. For students who enter the Pathway program but do not meet the required language requirements, an AE+ Pathway Individual Study Plan is prepared. Upon arrival, all applicants take an English proficiency test. Based on it, students are divided into groups (8 levels in total, from A1 to B2 + in accordance with the international classification), and for students of the AE + Pathway program, the required number of language lessons is determined (at least 1 semester of the AE course). The Academic English Program offers 3 trimesters per year: 15 weeks each in autumn and spring, 10 weeks in summer. Teaching load – from 18 hours a week. Regardless of the level, the program includes a basic language course (reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary), a course for the development of speech skills and 1 elective course of the student’s choice. At the end of each stage, students are tested. To progress to the next level, you need to get high grades (from A + to B-). If a student demonstrates exceptionally high proficiency in the Core and Communication courses, the teacher may decide to skip Level 1 in the next trimester.

General English Program. The General English program is designed for students of all levels of English who want to improve their communication skills and become more familiar with American culture. It does not include the study of academic disciplines. Even the successful development of the program does not make it possible to enter the George Mason University.
