Have you seen my giant collection of alphabet activities? Today I’m sharing a few of our favorite letter R activities for preschool.

When we began this a few months ago, my three-year-old recognized only a handful of letters.  Now he knows them all!  We’re still finishing up with the series, though, because I love the structure it provides for

• crafts and process art
• fine motor activities
• read-aloud books
• math connections

and so much more!

Let’s take a peek at letter R.

Letter R Activities

When we began our letter of the week, I found it important to start each week with a letter recognition activity.  Since my Three recognizes all of the alphabet now (thanks to the many whole alphabet activities we incorporate into letter of the week), I don’t find these as necessary.

But we did pull out my letter R dot page this week.  He loves our  Do-a-Dot markers!

We were inspired by Nurture Store’s rainbow writing tray and made our own.  I couldn’t believe how much fun he had drawing in salt with a chopstick!  You can see how he attempted some letter writing, including the backward “L.” 🙂

I’ve been wanting to pull out the river rocks I bought at Michael’s.  We used them to make play dough snakes (see the idea at Sugar Aunts), which was a great fine motor and sensory activity in one.

As long as we had the rocks out, I pulled out our balance for some simple math.  We talked about “heavy” and “light.”  He worked on balancing the scale and making each side heavier or lighter.

I wrote the letter “R” on a piece of paper, and my Three made a rocky R right on top of it.  Then he surprised me by saying he wanted to write the letter himself.

I was so impressed!  Because he doesn’t have the correct pencil grip yet, we haven’t started my beginning handwriting pages yet.  But I love that he’s finally interested in attempting letter writing on his own!

We love these rainbow number matching cards at From ABC’s to ACTs.

We did this simple R is for rain craft.  Be sure to visit our post with more letter R arts and crafts ideas!

We also printed the rainbow fish from Crafty Morning and followed their tutorial for celery painting.  What a neat idea!

He had fun making this  potato print rabbit, also from Crafty Morning.

For a whole alphabet and name activity in one, we used the free printable from PreK Pages.  My son sorted the letters to show which ones are in his name.  I wrote his name at the top of the paper as a reference.

20 Letter R Activities for Preschool Students

One of the best ways to teach preschool students letters is by devoting an entire week to each separate letter. This list goes over all of the R letter activities you will need to teach this awesome letter during your R week. 6. Sesame Street Letter R

Sesame Street Letter R video will have parents feeling nostalgic as it teaches their children the sound letter R makes. It also asks children to think of words beginning with R and reinforces the lessons with cartoons about other R words.

7. Phonic Letter R

If children are still struggling with the R sound, have them watch this phonics video that continuously uses the R sound to sound out words beginning with R.

Children will have fun learning about the letter R with the fun cartoons in this Storybots video. They will be jumping and dancing around to the song as they recite R words!

9. Bubble Letter R

Children will have fun coloring their polka-dotted Rs. Then they can practice their handwriting skills by tracing the words and then writing their own uppercase letters below.

10. I Spy the Letter R

Another worksheet from TwistyNoodle.com, this one asks students to find the letter R amongst all the alphabet letters. The neat thing is you can customize the text you would like them to trace at the bottom! Aside from this and the last worksheet, this website is an invaluable asset, so peruse their site for many more letter R tracing worksheets!

12. Letter Cards 

Create some letter R flashcards with things words like “rabbit” and “rain.” Children can practice their fine motor skills by coloring in their flashcards before cutting them out.

Letter R Snacks

13. Red, White, and Blue Fruit Salad

Reinforce the R sound with red, white, and blue fruit salad. It is easy to make, only using strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. Children can help by mixing all the chopped fruit together! This snack is also great for talking about colors! You can even use red raspberries and strawberries to double up on the red!

Using vegetables you know your children will like, you can create a rainbow tray of raw veggies and serve them with ranch. They will get a nutritious snack while learning!

Letter R Crafts

16. R is for Raccoon

Children will have to create their own raccoons with this fun letter R craft. For this craft, you will need scissors, glue, white paper, black paper, blue construction paper (though you could use different colored paper for the background if needed), and googly eyes.

17. Mosaic Rainbow

This colorful letter craft builds on the rainbow theme from snack time. Using cut-up colored paper, children can create their own rainbows by gluing the strips onto the template! If they’re a little more advanced, you can just use white paper without needing the template.

Children will love this robot toilet paper craft! Use an empty toilet paper roll, glue on beads, buttons, google eyes, and more to create a unique robot!

19. Magazine Rs

Using the linked artwork as inspiration, have children create their own letter R collages by looking through magazines to find Rs. They could even mix in magazine pictures of items that begin with R with their letter Rs! They’ll be having so much fun that they will be learning letter-building skills without even knowing!
