Why Kyrie Irving didn’t make it in Boston

May 10, 2019

Kyrie wanted to step out of LeBron’s shadow but wasn’t ready to lead the Celtics.

Boston won the first game of the series with Milwaukee, after which they suffered four defeats in a row and had the worst season in several years in terms of the ratio of the final result to the team’s capabilities. Failures – and Celtics fans are unlikely to be happy with a weak-willed elimination in the second round – are rarely caused by any one reason. nine0003

Video of the day

Of course, there is always a factor that should be considered the most important, but do not forget about the small details that fail at the most crucial moment. Now is the time to discuss in detail the prerequisites that led Boston to failure.

Expectations

In the 2016-17 season, the Celtics dealt with the Bulls and Wizards in succession, but faced LeBron James in the conference finals. Brad Stevens releases a combination of Thomas – Bradley – Crowder – Amir Johnson – Horford at the start, but then Isaiah gets injured. “Boston” does not give up and scratches one match from the King. Before the next regular season, Danny Ainge is making a fantastic buff. As a free agent on the maximum contract comes Hayward, who had progressed every year before and was well known to Stevens. A broken Isaiah with makeweights is exchanged for Irving, who hit the decisive throw in the seventh match of the final series with the Warriors, and in the Celtics draft, the promising Tatum is chosen under the third number. That is, the team that had just reached the final of the conference received two stars and a top prospect while retaining other important performers. Hayward went out with an injury in the first game of the season, and then Irving suffered the same. It seemed that in the playoffs, the Celtics kindergarten with Uncle Horford would be a convenient opponent for any contender. nine0003

However, in the first round, Boston passed Giannis and company, then Stevens defiantly outraged the promoted Sixers stars, but LeBron again got on the way to the big final. Yes, the King was already without Irving, only Boston itself performed without two of its stars. The Celtics became a real family, fought for each other and brought the showdown to the seventh match, but still lost. Tatum fired in the first playoffs, Brown did a brilliant job, Smart gnawed any ball, Rozier went to a whole new level, Baines and Morris helped the youth in important moments, and Horford showed himself as a leader who became a conductor of coaching ideas and tied together the entire system of the Boston game. LeBron went to Hollywood, Giannis hadn’t achieved anything in the cup battles by that time, no one took the Sixers seriously, and the Raptors were considered the eternal losers of the knockout games. The Celtics had a lot of experience, the youth was ready to grow, and then two stars finally recovered. On paper, Boston really looked like the clear favorite of the East, but this season everything immediately went wrong. nine0003

Role reshuffling and ambition

Sly Danny Ainge put together a team of incredible potential, Brad Stevens kept moving forward every year, and most of the Celtics’ players developed on this team. However, the human factor and the share of chance sometimes lead to a catastrophic failure.

For many basketball fans, “Boston” created the impression of a stable, indestructible structure with a reliable foundation, but all the pillars of the green skyscraper at one moment lost their strength. Rosier, Tatum and Brown had just narrowly eliminated LeBron, and in the new regular season, young and promising guys were forced to move for Irving and Hayward. nine0003

Of course, ambitious athletes who have shown themselves well, but have not yet received solid contracts, were very dissatisfied with the changes in the rotation. The statistics of each decently sank. In the 2017/18 playoffs, Rozier averaged 37 minutes, Brown 32, Tatum 36, and the boys scored 53 points across three. In the 2018/19 regular season, the time of each decreased to 23, 26 and 31 minutes, and the total performance to 37.7 points. Stevens acted quite logically in giving Hayward time. Gordon needed to gradually acquire a game rhythm and reach a stellar level, but the ex-Utah striker even visually became much less aggressive and effective, after which he turned into a classic role player, who was eventually pushed to the bench. All season long, Irving ranted about leadership, which led to obvious problems in the Greens locker room. On the one hand, Kyrie reasonably stated his championship experience, they say, the main point guard of Boston knows better than anyone else in the team how to get the title. At the same time, the youth of the Celtics had an equally weighty argument in the form of amazing success in the past playoffs, somehow they managed without their main star. nine0003

Month after month flew by in the regular season, Boston hung on the brink of a top-four finish in the East, and the organization’s management took a wait-and-see attitude. Disagreements in the locker room were not smoothed out, naively believing that a common goal would force basketball players to unite, and Danny Ainge refused a possible strengthening during the exchange period, preferring not to scatter the club’s assets. Due to Oladipo’s injury, the Celtics still got the advantage of their parquet in the first round of the playoffs and dealt with the Pacers in four games. In the first game of the Eastern Conference semi-finals, Horford ate Giannis, Boston got the away victory, and nothing boded trouble. But all the internal illnesses of the Brad Stevens team instantly revealed themselves to the world, as if a Massachusetts leprechaun was covered with chickenpox in one second. nine0003

The scale of the problems in the playoffs increases exponentially

After the opening notch, the referees stopped allowing the Celtics basketball players to stop Giannis in any way they wanted, and the Greens’ defense began to burst at the seams. Antetokounmpo began to dominate the “paint”, hit from behind the arc, stand on the penalty line a huge number of times and find partners with cool passes. Stevens should not have been surprised by the Greek’s performance. Boston and their youngsters nearly passed LeBron, so the Celtics had a decent chance of taking out the Bucks even with Giannis’ fantastic play. But for the first time in a long time, none of the ideas of the green mentor brought results in the course of a single series. nine0003

Hayward averaged 7.4 points in five games against the Bucks, while George Hill averaged 14.2. Pat Connaughton, coming off the bench, won 44 rebounds in the entire series, and Boston’s best in this component, Marcus Morris, 47. The Celtics reserve was outright inferior to the counterpart, Giannis dominated the paint, Stevens’ snipers attacked with a terrible percentage, and the nominal leader turned out to be incapable of feats in difficult times. “Boston” looked doomed, the fighting spirit remained only among some warriors (Morris, Smart). Even visually, it seemed that many players did not want to play in the same team with each other, and going to the parquet from a favorite thing of a lifetime turned into a routine job at a not very successful enterprise. For the Celtics, things could have turned out differently if the character, who played his last game in what was probably his last game in Boston’s jersey number 11, became a mental leader, a connecting element and a guy who lives up to the trust of his partners. Kyrie instigated a trade from Cleveland to build his own legacy, but Irving lacked character and grit. nine0003

Unfortunate exit from LeBron’s shadow

Each real star has its own unique characteristics, but the main measure of the level of a top basketball player is always the ability to drag his team at the right time, make a difference, motivate partners with deeds or at least words and set an example of their own dedication. We did not see any of the above from Irving.

Let’s see how Kairi’s interview relates to his actions. After the first (winning) game of the series (12/21 in the field, 11 assists): “I don’t have to worry about shooting. I can find an opportunity to shoot any time I want. Everyone knows this.” After the second fight (4/18 from the field, 4 assists): “Are you ready to take on additional responsibility? That’s exactly what I’m here for. This is what Boston traded me for. Today, the opponent sometimes put up three defenders against me. I need to better understand these episodes.” nine0003

The Celtics lost both home games, Kyrie had a total of 15/44 in the field with 16 assists and stated the following: “I didn’t hit. The ball did not fly into the ring after my throws. The Bucks also did a pretty good job of making the task more difficult. The “paint” was always filled with their players when I went into the passage, and in general, wherever I moved on the court. I always saw two or three people, sometimes four. Now we need to prepare for match number five. In the final game of the playoffs, Irving hit 6/21 from the field and made only 1 interception. Kairi failed at everything. In some matches, Boston number 11 collected good statistics on assists, but this does not reflect the real state of affairs. Irving overplayed the ball very often and constantly ruined the Celtics’ team offense. The Bucks defense got an extra edge and executed it beautifully. nine0003

If Kairi found himself with the ball inside the arc, he almost certainly took the throw himself. At the same time, sometimes they really doubled on Irving, but the main point guard of Boston continued to bend his line and fire at the hoops of the ring. At times, the situation was reminiscent of Bryant’s heroic seasons, only Kobe’s partners were three heads weaker. With unparalleled stubbornness, Kairi took the initiative and turned into the worst possible version of a leader. Irving completely lost control, could not stop and focused only on endless attempts to catch his throw to the detriment of his partners. During time-outs and on the bench, the Celtics number 11 did not communicate with teammates, and on defense sometimes openly stood up and watched what was happening with demonstrative indifference. As a result, Kairi did not become a leader in the locker room, could not rally the team, but only became a reason for the discontent of partners, overplayed the ball, made terrible decisions in attack, attacked with a low percentage, hacked in defense and did not make any efforts to break series progress. nine0003

Consequences

In the final part of the text, I would like to remember after the fact a quote about chaos theory from my favorite movie: “They say that even such a trifle as the flapping of a butterfly’s wing can, in the end, cause a typhoon on the other side of the world.” Demarche Kyrie, who provoked his trade to Boston, launched an incredible number of significant events for the NBA: – LeBron has very likely ceased to seriously claim the title and may not win a single ring again; – Cleveland returned to their native swamp, and it is not clear when the next time they will reach the NBA finals; – Isaiah Thomas from the contender for the MVP has sunk to a minimum contract and removal from the rotation; – The Celtics are stuck in development and risk never opening the championship window; – The Lakers have to deal with an aging star on a multi-year contract; – Youngsters “Boston” and “Los Angeles” lost ground in the eyes of the public; Liu and Walton are fired, and Stevens fails for the first time. nine0003

But the funny thing is that the decisions of the Celtics or Irving himself initially looked correct and logical. Boston strengthened the squad on paper, and Kyrie wanted to build a career based on his own opinion and ambitions. Unfortunately, the two-year romance between Irving and Boston did not turn out to be successful, so both sides need to look for other ways to achieve their goals. Kyrie is in for a major chapter in his career, and the Celtics still have a chance to regroup and conquer the East. nine0003

Other Pat Connaughton James LeBron Marcus Morris Amir Johnson George Hill Irving and Kevin Durant boycotted the national anthem throughout the 20/21 season.

According to NBA rules, the US anthem must be played before all league games. Players are required to stand during the anthem, however this rule has not always been enforced in recent years due to the Black Lives Matter social justice movement. nine0003

According to Sullivan, Irving and Durant found a way to skip the anthem by hiding under the stands after the lights went out and the cameras switched to commercials.

“After Kyrie Irving returned to action in January, he began sneaking out of pre-match warm-ups ten minutes before kick-off, disappearing into the dark arena tunnel and missing the national anthem. Kevin Durant followed him silently a minute later as the cameras switched to commercials and the lights went out,” Sullivan writes. nine0003
