Conversation with President of the United Russian-American Association (URAA) Elena Suvorova-Philips

We met this amazing, literally bursting with energy woman on the sidelines of the Russkiy Mir Foundation. By the will of fate, she has been living in the USA for almost two decades, and she tirelessly builds cultural bridges between the two peoples. And the “building materials” for these bridges are the most durable: the Russian word, Russian music and . .. Russian doll.

– Elena, you are a puppeteer by profession. Why dolls? Did you not finish playing them as a child?

– I am generally a needlewoman by nature: I love embroidery, knitting, folk crafts. At one time she graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Textile and Light Industry named after Kirov, and then the School of Party and Economic Activists. I have been living in the capital of Texas, Houston, for 17 years, since I married an American. Already here she studied under the special program of Moscow State University for compatriots abroad “Russian as non-native”.

She made her first dolls a long time ago – several decades ago, back in Russia. And six years ago, the Houston Russian Theater decided to stage a play based on Leonid Filatov’s fairy tale “The Tale of Fedot the Archer, a daring young man.” And I suggested to the director that a wandering puppeteer would come on stage and first show the puppets, and then the characters in these costumes would appear. Everyone liked the idea, and I sewed my first collection. In the play, I myself played the nanny. Remember: “Well, scratch something, old devil, If it bakes a bald head ?! You have every hair here. You have to register!”

The performance was a success. After that, I wandered through Russian sites for needlewomen and took a slightly different puppet technique – textile sculpture. Some people just don’t have the patience to work it out to their own result, but I’m a diligent person. Therefore, I began to make larger puppets – “parsley” type, which can be used for puppet theater. What kind of rag “actors” I did not have at first! Some old women on plastic bottles, a panel where several faces are mixed – about fifty. They pushed me to create my own theatre. For him, I supplemented the “troupe” with another fifty characters.

In order to prepare the premiere of my dolls’ “appearance” to the audience, I turned to the house of Russian-speaking pensioners for help, brought them a collection of dolls and scenery for the production of the fairy tale “Golden Fish”. They gladly brought it to life. At the same time, a small kindergarten in Houston staged a fairy tale about King Pea. And I myself began to select people for staging the puppet show Geese-Swans. The theme is fertile, I immediately found several assistants, who later became the backbone of the theater.

On June 3, 2010, exactly on the Holy Trinity, our performance-triptych “Come Fairy Tale” was released in the cultural center “Our Texas”. Despite the lack of advertising in the media, a full house gathered – not only immigrants from Russia with their children, but also Americans with adopted Russian children. There was success, applause.

– That is, the ground has appeared for the spread of Russian traditional culture and language …

– Certainly. In addition, the local press often writes about us. And not only Russian-speaking – “Our Texas”, “Russian America” ​​and others. Major media are also showing interest.

After all, puppet fairy-tale performances are a very bright genre, it captures both children and adults, breaks down barriers between generations, people of different cultures. I ordered a roll of Khokhloma fabric from Russia, sewed very bright costumes, which I also painted with sequins – everything is on fire! The theater, by the way, was called “Khokhloma”. More than fifty Russian women’s headdresses were made – both kokoshniks and kits. On the tables in the foyer before the performance, we lay them out on the tables for free. The spectator girls try them on with pleasure, and then we dance round dances with them. This seemingly simple attraction also arouses interest in Russian culture. It’s the same story with folklore music. We don’t have such musicians in Houston, but in neighboring Austin lives an extra-class balalaika player Sergei Vashchenko. He was the dean of the music faculty of the Perm Institute of Culture. A virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Zhenya Rok (Russian surname Kolykhanov) arrives from Austin. And these super-musicians also help us in the theater.

In 2009, on the 200th anniversary of Nikolai Gogol, a large festival “The Great Russian Word” was organized in Houston – with the staging of various performances, where she acted as both a costume designer and an actress. In the production of “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka” she played Solokha. Then the Russkiy Mir Foundation sent us a collection of books for an award. And in 2014, we successfully hosted a celebration dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the first victory of the Russian fleet under the command of Peter the Great over the Swedes at Cape Gangut…

From the Russkiy Mir Foundation, I received grants for the same Gogol festival, then for the powerful Captain of the Earth festival in 2011, dedicated to the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight. This celebration acquired a special charm in the “space” Houston.

– And what did it look like?

– The head of the well-known project “Ethnomir” Ruslan Bayramov sponsored the installation in our city of the statue of the first cosmonaut of the Earth. True, the Houston administration put forward a condition: there should be a memorial to John Glenn, the first American astronaut to make an orbital flight, nearby. Bayramov, without thinking twice, paid for it too. Strange as it may seem, even the Yesenin Museum with the exhibition “Oh, Rus’, flap your wings” came to us from Moscow through “RM” to the Gagarin festival. Heroes of Russia, active cosmonauts also arrived: Maxim Suraev, Roman Romanenko, Sergey Volkov. There was an exhibition of “space” posters, children’s drawings and poems, a festive party “Earth in the window.” In addition to the Russians, their American and Canadian counterparts were present. Everything was held at a high level – both solemnly and cheerfully …

This November, with the help of Russkiy Mir, we are holding the Relay of Arts Festival dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Ivan Turgenev and the 110th anniversary of Nikolai Nosov. And, of course, we will celebrate together with the famous Dunno and his friends!

– Let’s get back to your puppet show…

– There are five or six of us adults who come to rehearsals in their free time, often stage performances with their own savings. In addition to those that she talked about, over the years we have staged for the 200th anniversary of Pyotr Ershov – “Humpbacked Horse”, then “The Adventures of Dunno and His Friends”, “The Adventures of Chipollino”, “Flying Ship”, “Teremok”, “Gingerbread Man” . We transform some productions into New Year’s morning performances. Over time, our theater entered the guild of puppeteers of Texas.

The year before last, we prepared the performance “Flower-Semitsvetik” in Russian. But then we were invited to participate in the “World Culture Forum” (World Forum of Cultures), then held in Houston. All participants limited themselves to exhibiting tables with national souvenirs, but we were the only ones who showed the show. In translation into English, the performance was called “Magic Flower”. They made a very good soundtrack.

And last year, in the very center of Houston, on a platform in the middle of skyscrapers, we played a fairy tale by Valentin Kataev in Khokhloma costumes, with voice acting through powerful speakers. Between acts, a cracker explodes and large soap bubbles fly to the tune of a quadrille. More than five hundred spectators came – American students and schoolchildren. We watched the performance with bated breath. And when the girl healed the boy in a wheelchair with the last petal, everyone clapped. And then at once they ran to the stage to dance and take pictures against our background. It was a real triumph of the Russian spirit in the very heart of America! In Texas, at a competition of similar theaters, we received an audience award.

On the next date of the Baptism of Rus’, I made a doll of the Holy Prince Vladimir and the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga. In Houston, an Orthodox church was consecrated just in honor of St. Vladimir, and Father Lubomir (he is from Slovaks), having looked at these dolls and realizing that there is no mockery here, blessed their demonstration. At the same time, a trinity of “brotherly” puppet figures was born to me – a Russian boy, a Ukrainian boy and a funny, as it were, common grandmother. Having photographed the composition, I called it “On the day of the Baptism of Rus’, Lord, save us all.” I sent it out as a postcard to the recipients of the Russkiy Mir. Imagine, responded an Orthodox priest from France – a descendant of Pushkin. He wrote to me: “Here you are, Lenochka, and began to engage in puppet service.”

After that, I made dolls of the early princes of Rus’, Ivan the Terrible, Peter I, Catherine II … I sewed Tolstoy, Pushkin, Lermontov, Chekhov, Tchaikovsky, Suvorov, Lomonosov. Three times I was mistaken for Gorky, but the “proletarian writer” did not work for me. But Putin turned out right away.

– They are also all “parsley type”, that is, – put your hand in and play?

– Yes, but somehow we didn’t arrange performances with them … Although, if there was a good script … I don’t have a special theatrical education, I’m a do-it-yourselfer. Perhaps someone may be offended by the puppet interpretation of historical events, great people, but, in my opinion, the main thing is that all my puppets are made with love.

Many of them were preparing for historical dates. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Motherland doll appeared. Of course, no one would even think to play it. And last year, a collection dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the 1917 revolution was born. A sailor from the Aurora, a soldier in a shabby overcoat, a cheeky quartermaster, Cossacks, a cornet, Lenin and Trotsky … On the last Russian day of national unity (we call this holiday “November” in our country) they staged a small performance with them in Houston. The Russian-speaking “community” comes to such gatherings in the park, both old and young – there are 250-300 people. I made a potpourri of revolutionary songs and we, as usual, in nature before the festive meal and “singing” played some improvisational scenes with these puppets. Now this collection is in the premises of the Russian Cultural Center (Rossotrudnichestvo) in Washington.

– And how does an American husband feel about your hobby?

– He is a software engineer, far from art, although his first education is literary criticism. I have a very respectful attitude to my passion for dolls, rightly considering such an activity as a means of my self-expression. And he always supports me, which means a lot to me. At my request (we all have a noticeable accent), he superbly recited its English translation into the soundtrack of the performance “Tsvetik-Semitsvetik”.

– You also write poetry, don’t you?

– Yes, I published the book “The Poet’s String Bag”, which includes childhood memories, a description of life in Texas, the entire history of the Houston theater movement, poems from different years, and even rhymed recipes from our family recipes.

But the main thing in life for me is still dolls.

– How many do you have today?

– More than four hundred. By the way, the collection of my dolls was exhibited during the Assembly of the “Russian World” in the Tauride Palace of St. Petersburg, delegates and guests of the Assembly performed with my dolls, reading the poem “Borodino”, reciting the famous maxims of Alexander Suvorov, and even sang the “Hymn of Democratic Youth” . Probably, indeed, “you won’t strangle our song, you won’t kill it,” especially if it is a song about the Motherland.

– Doesn’t it feel like going home?

– Still how it pulls! Thanks to Russkiy Mir, I began to appear quite often in Russia at various events. Well, someday, I hope, I will return for good. For all these years, I have not succeeded in becoming an American. In the meantime, as best I can, I continue to work actively among compatriots in the United States, preserving our culture, history and traditions.
